I waited a couple years between bottles, with the last being in 2013. Opened this bottle last night, as I wanted something from the cellar that was a bit more fruit centric, plusher--so, go with the Papa's as this consistently delivers. Here is the thing for me with Mike's syrahs, what I like about them. They give me fruit with plusher textures. And yet, they have edges. Let's use this Papa's to make my point. First off, dark color, mainly a maroonish purple. There is the Carlisle texture, where there is a gentle, full palate presentation, not of the leaner side of things. This is labeled at 15.9% abv, and yet there is no booze nor distraction within the aromatic. And I wonder if the abv is lower, as I don't feel bonked the head after a glass, FWIW. And to the point about having edges, this wine exhibits the imprint of whole cluster--garrigue, cooked meat, steak sauce, pepper, yet wrapped around all that is the plusher, dark raspberry and blackberry fruit. Oh, and there's acidity too. This ain't flabby or unbalanced, as there is a lively zing that sits in the finish of the wine, along with good structure. All in, this is just great CA syrah. I'm really lasered down to just a few syrah producers, and really mostly the fragile palate stuff that lies in the low abv spectrum of things. However, with Mike's syrahs, with the Papa's, Rosella's and the AVA cuvees, these remain on my purchase list. Mike's syrahs provide a great counterpoint to Copain and Wind Gap, more like the Riverain syrahs, and all of them fit on my short list for syrah I buy now and enjoy. Love this 2010 Papa's.

Big hit at a wine-centric party. Dark color, somewhat closed. Nice "zinny" fruit. Surprisingly rich, with a solid finish. Heavy, old-school zin, it probably needs another year or two. Terrific value and unexpectedly good for a generic wine. Can't wait to taste the '09 Papera, Montafi, etc.

Went back and finished bottle, compared to other Cali Rhone blends, this has a great nose, remains huge, and very forward fruit. Will be really interested to give my other bottles some time to settle down, but fun to drink now as well.

Medium-bodied, soft dark red fruit, slightly chewy, touch of spice, backbone of tannin, very good structure, medium finish, wine lacked the complexity and richness of fruit found in Carlisle Zins and Syrahs

Dinner with Friends (Edwin's/Our Backyard by the Fire): I know this was young, but that's how my wife loves her wines. It turned out everyone else did too. Pop and pour, this showed great from the get go and kept improving until it was drained a short time later. Purple in color. The nose has black olives, black raspberries, black pepper and slight grilled meats. Great juicy, lush texture. Very easy to drink. Great with our food.

4 years in between bottles, what is a long pause for me typically, I opened this y/day and drew off a glass for dinner, and at that time, was struck by the level of acidity here. Bright and lively, I would think too much for some people. Re-tasting today, there is fruit here, and I'd call the weight medium plus, not lean or austere at all. Dark cherry and blueberry are the fruit impressions, then some sweet leather, peat, and plenty of citrus rind. I find the total collection of flavors here unique, as the fruit and texture of it is classic Carlisle, suave and plush, yet the leather and acidic red fruit tones create a juxtaposition which just doesn't work all that well for me. As to where this will head, there is plenty of acidity here to carry the wine so this can rest a few more years, I suppose.

Outstanding and drinking very well. Lots of zin fruit, but what stands out about this wine is the balance. Good acidity keeps it from being ponderous and there is brown sugar, cinammon and other spices to add character. For a zin, I dare say this is elegant. The 15.5% alcohol was completely in check when this was served around 60 deg. However, as it warmed to room temp, I could start to feel a bit of heat (and I'm sensitive to that). Another lovely wine from Carlisle.

Crimson in color. 15.9% ABV. Black fruits, olive brine, game and smoke on the nose. Medium body with strong acidity. Perfect texture and mouthfeel. Blueberries, blackberries and coffee on the palate. Exceptional finish. Drinks younger than the vintage on the label. Should cruise for another 2-3 years.

Opened last night with dinner, with it showing quite a bit of acidity. 'bout 1/2 bottle left, re-tasting a day later. Nice and cool, ideal temp, and FWIW, goes great with a So Cal summer evening. When cool, this exhibits a green melon, with tart apple and lemon acidity, along with what is akin to a licorice/fennel note--just a shading of black licorice, I guess would be my descriptor. As it warms up, a little whiff of coconut/vanilla shows, and the fruit begins to fatten up some more, almost veering towards a yellow apple and lemon peel, hell, and even some orange oil. I tell you what, this is really two different expressions of wine based on the serving temp. At cool temps, I like this much more, as it's more vibrant and energetic. With a warmer temp, it's for me not as good, more easygoing and loses its edge. Given all this, I would say to drink now and serve cooler to really enjoy what is here, FWIW.

Dark ruby in color with a bit of forest floor and oak aromas. Great berry fruit and briery Zin notes. The 15.8% abv is well hidden. This shows some of the roundness that I associate with Rossi Ranch. No hard edges and drinking well now. Best of the very few 2013s I've tried so far.
