2000 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio

Chianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more

7/22/2015 - mrantipov Likes this wine: 90 points

The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells like dust, forest floor, mineral, smokey bacon, cedar, vanilla, black pepper, cinnamon, meaty, tobacco, thyme, oregano, mint, chocolate, tar and prune. The body is medium. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity.

Perfectly fine CCR, ready to drink. Commendably old-world, but lacking some of the barnyard that makes Chianti something that you know a winemaker, rather than a factory or consultant, concocted.

Appearance: Medium ruby with an orange tinge on the outer rim. On the nose, juniper, tree bark, anise, iron and earth. On the palate - light to medium bodied with flavors of bright, red fruits, pine, iron. Firm but pleasing chalky tannins. This is a formidable earthy, mineral bomb of a Chianti. It's also very much a food wine. Don't open this just because you want to drink a red. Open it because you need a bottle of red with the food you are preparing. We paired this with a bbq'd tri tip, oven fries and salad. Great summer meal with a perfect Chianti.

Surprised at the notes below, This was undrinkable for 24hrs. After a double decant it still smelled awful, no fruit, but no evidence of cork, just harsh like tree bark and rubber. Next day it tasted much more like a solid chianti, though still tight. If you have any of these, forget about them for a good while, or if you open it and it seems no good, cork it and try it again the next day.
Surprising for such a low-priced chianti, but its one for the long-term.

Mörk, lite övermogen frukt, körsbärskärnor. Tjära (tågvirke) Efterhand lite ljusare bär (hallon, smultron). Mandel. Mycket syra, lite bitter, torra och ganska försiktiga tanniner.

Very nice Chianti, made by a winemaker, not a factory or a consultant. Full-bodied, fruit-driven, but with layers of complexity. All that's missing is a tang of the barnyard--a nostalgie de la boue, I'm ashamed to say.

This is a terrific Chianti. First bottle from my case. Really lovely sappy fruit. Plenty of grip. Long finish. Year in, year out this is my go to Chianti.

We are far from experts on Chianti Classico wines, but this seemed to be a solid tasty wine for the money. We wanted a sangiovese based wine to go with our red pasta sauce and this worked perfectly. Wish we gave it a decant before serving as it improved significantly over an hour.

I can't quibble with the tasting notes that I provided in January 2015, but I don't like this wine quite as much on a revisit. So I've given it a 91 instead of a 93. I still feel that the wine is a few years from its peak. The finish is a little tough now and it tastes somewhat unresolved.

Good not great, balanced, good fruit, not much complexity, usually a fav but it lacked that spark, drank with pizza at Arturo's , will drink other vintages again.

Fantastic! In its prime drinking window. Gobs of fruit, hint of herbs and earth, and smooth tannins all in great balance. Drinks well above its price.

Had at dinner and didn't take any proper notes.

The wine has a medium intensity ruby color.

The nose is very Italian and, in my book, typical Chianti with sour, dark cherries, fresh basil and sage and some dusty gravel. Not complex but enjoyable.

On the palate the wine is dry with a medium acidity, medium body and medium(-) tannin. It is refreshing and easy-drinking and paired very well with our Pici al Ragu. Surprisingly young for it's age and will definitely hold it together for another 1 or 2 years.

Very good QPR at 7€ (69SEK)!

On the nose, beautiful camphor, bandaid, and strawberry. On the palate, black cherry, earth, strawberry, and hints of black pepper and leather, with strong acidity and a medium to long finish. This is very good on its own, but it really shines as an accompaniment to food -- a rich, salty pasta sets it off perfectly. It's excellent, but with the price creeping up over $50 I question whether it's worth the extra cost over the regular Riserva. I would call it a good value at about two-thirds of that.

A fruitforward jammy version, with a nice underlying telltale monsanto character in its fruit and spice profile, but ultimately this shows the signs of the vintage. Voluptous fruit and not enough structure giving a fatiguing mouthfeel. The fruit is overripe, candied, and the finish is fairly brief. I am not indulging further in this vintage and prefer to stock up on other recent vintages

These has evolved well since having last 2 years ago, and showing why it's much different with a little age. The fruit was a little subdued, but reached the surface more and more after a few hours. A really nice nose and flavors of mushroom, earth, cherries. I'd suggest to drink now and over the next 3 years.
