2012 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 40th Anniversary

Napa Valley more

Confected nose of vanilla bean and marshmallow (both of which I detest). On the palate, lush and rich dark fruits and root beer float. Silky with soft tannins. Too sweet for this Bordeaux lover, but sweet-toothed wine drinkers raved.

Decanted a couple of hours, then consumed over the next 48. Tasted head to head with 2012 SLWC Cask 23. Special Selection was the clear winner. Unlike the 2012 Caymus regular, this wine was not over the top with jammy notes, much better balance with fruit and aromatics. Make no mistake, still a fruit forward wine. Improved the longer it stayed in the decanter. This is a big winner. Sad the price escalated so much, but I will be throwing more in my cellar.

Big nose of fruit. First is creosote and tar. Then evolves into blackberry tart and blueberry pie. Like the great crusty part. After 45 mins it moved again to delicate patrols with fruit still moving.

Threw a lot of sediment.

I'm usually a fan Caymus SS, but this was disappointing. Obviously well made and in balance, but only prevalent flavor was oak. No fruit to speak of. True over two nights under pump. Balance was good, but at the core, no good taste.

Blackberry Koolaid, cherry cola, vanilla, a touch of oak, everything is decently balance. Structure, acidity and tannins are nearly non existent, this Caymus like most Caymus's is strongly dependent on fruit for it's definitive current pleasure. Drink soon for the love of the fruit!

Very nice cab. Dark fruits, full bodied, soft tannins, smooth, lush mouth feel and simple finish. Not complex but good complement to some steaks.

Cruising the Oceans; 5/17/2015-5/24/2015: Compared to the Hillside Select 2000 which I have just finished drinking this was like fruit juice. An absolute fruit bomb. I am sure if this were not after the Hillside Select then it would have got a 95+

You need to be in the mood for fruit. Rich cassis berries. Still a powerhouse.

Cruising the Oceans; 5/17/2015-5/24/2015: Youthful fruity nose of multiple berries. Hint of dark cherry and dark chocolate. Alcohol on the nose indicates youth.

Very dark red almost ruby. Could do with decanting.

Not a complex dimension in the finish.

Ordered a glass of this at a hotel bar. Was a bit concerned i might get an over Oaked and vanilla cab but was pleased with it. Full bodiesd and silky smooth cab. Aromas of dark fruit, anise, vanilla, French toast. Silmilar flavor profile and good acidity to cut thru it. I enjoyed it but feel it's a one glass wine. Too rich on the palate for two.

A bottle I had less than a year ago was still OK, so I assumed this one would be too. I couldn't have been more wrong. This was beyond dead. It was dead and rapidly decaying. For a Cabernet that's this expensive, from a producer this exalted, this is inexcusable. I know that 2004 Cabernets from people like Pride and Chappellet are just now hitting their peak, yet this comparably priced 2005 is DOA? Because of their weird 2012, I had just about decided to stop buying Caymus Cabernets. With this one, that decision is no longer tentative.

Drank this with the 2006 Caymus special selection. I think the 2006 is more along the style of the 2012. At least much closer than the 2010 & 2011 are in style. Both are very dark, rich and very full flavor. The 2012 is much sexier, velvety and silky than the 2006 . The 2006 is massive and in your face and was undrinkable to some in the group but I loved it. I love the 2012 Caymus SS also. Its the best Caymus I have ever had. If you haven't had one yet you need to get one.
My previous tasting notes apply to this wine again.

All the usual Caymus traits, sweet, dark, rich, extracted, etc. paired perfectly with BBQ beef brisket from Deep Run Roadhouse ( the best brisket I have ever had) the smokiness of the meat and the richness of the Caymus was a marriage made in heaven. Yum!

Thought this was better in the past. Too much oak with vanilla and lots of wood. It just overpowers this. A little astringent and hollow lacking structure. Fading all ready. Drink up.

wow, what a polarising wine!!!
if anybody is ever looking for the definition of "wine snobbery", or they simply want to have a good laugh at the ridiculously pathetic comments of individuals who have egos far, far bigger than their brains, go take a look at the thread on this wine over on the "wines berserkers" forum. It most certainly will make you cringe, from the first post onwards!!!
anyway,to the wine. Yep, it has masses, and I mean masses, of everything. Black cherries, vanilla, coconut, blueberries, maybe even blueberry pancake. As an Aussie, I have seen this style of wine on countless occasions, although it is usually found in shiraz-based reds over here.
Pretty hard to drink if pop and pour, but let it settle in a decanter for six hours and you have a very bold, but never-the-less, decadent and quaffable red.
My guess is this wine will settle nicely with another 5 years in the bottle, and whilst it will never challenge the 2012's at the top of the Cali tree, it will still be interesting, enjoyable and excellent drinking.
Whilst not my style, I can see many wine-lovers really adoring this wine, with good reason. Those idiotic wine snobs who wrote that only "people with terrible palates" could love this wine are just that.
For me a 91+ point wine, but it is easy to see why many would rate this 96.
