7/28/2015 - Wine_Bear Does not like this wine: NR

Although wine was stored properly from purchase upon release until consumed, the wine is very old, with some leather and peppery spice, very little life, no fruit or perfume. A half-bottle that should have been drunk years ago.

Generous fruit both on the nose and on the palate, Very young, fruity, primary wine with fine ripe tannins. This should become much much better with time. Give it at least 10y. 91-94p range.

Deep ruby color, slight bricking; lovely black fruit, capsicum, youthful nose; palate is full bodied, integrated tannins, great fruit, not harsh at all; long finish. Superb, youthful. Has decades ahead of it, but this was much more ready to drink than my last taste. 93+

Chateau Calon Segur Vertical Tasting (Crystal Wines shop, Valley Point): From a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.
Dark vibrant red with crimson hue. Perfume nose, balance and complex, showing cassis, blackberry, earth and toasty oak. Still primary.
Fresh and lively palate, yet possess good weight. Blackcurrant, blackberry intermixed with
cedar oak, licorice and hints of herbs. Still very young and showing firm chewy tannins and long lingering finish. This is a wine demand for aging. Very good now and look forward to revisit in future.

Chateau Calon Segur Vertical Tasting (Crystal Wines shop, Valley Point): Again from a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot and double decanted for 1.5 hours.
Dark and almost opaque core with crimson hue. Nice and expressive aromas, some leafy herbal tones follow by blackcurrant, blue fruits, cherry, vanilla, perfume oak. Surprisingly fresh and attractive nose for 2003.
Rich and dense on palate, a very structured wine, still not very approachable on palate, exhibits rich cassis fruit, blueberries, violet, cedar oak intermixed with some dusty, earthy notes and licorice. Long and restraint finish with ample ripe grippy tannins. Another impressive efforts with good aging potential.

Chateau Calon Segur Vertical Tasting (Crystal Wines shop, Valley Point): Blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Double decanted for 1.5 hours.
Intense dark garnet with just a slight brick red at the rim. Perfume nose with black fruits element, still primary, nice ripe blackberry, plum, hints of earthy, dusty notes and chocolate, toasty oak.
Robust and structure entry, showing dusty earthiness along with blackcurrant, blackberry, mineral, mint and fresh herbs, violet and oak integrated well. It has a firm chewy tannins and long persistent finish.
Very good and in a big, powerful style but at the same time austere and backwards. This may not be in its drinking window and need another few more years.

My last bottle was 4yrs ago, and this is still showing rather closed and awkward unlike many '03s. Leather and funk on the shy nose. Dark fruit palate, very shy though the tannins are not and quite coarse in texture. Still very coiled up and somewhat unforgiving. Awkward and un-nuanced at this stage. Hold and hope for improvement.

On night 2 much more expressive. Smokey nose with plenty of ash anc charcoal on the palate. Fruits in the background, still of the black profile. Somewhat clipped finish. Still the most "un-'03" of any 2003 bdx I've had. Maybe needs more time?

Extremely green and vegetable dominant, with extreme undergrowth character. The palate seems less under-ripe, there is some fruit power behind it that doesn't match what I got on the nose. Tried from two bottles with the same result. Has some interesting character but this was a poor showing.

This was in great shape for its 50-plus years. Nice deep color. Not dazzling aromatically, bottle was slightly ullaged and showed signs of having seeped in the past. Cork was pretty much saturated but firmly in place. This bottle probably wasn't a sterling example but still was impressive and pleasing. Flavoury and solid to the core over 2 hours plus being open. Never fell apart. This is a favorite Bdx producer stylistically for me and still usually a value for the quality level.

1959 Château Calon-Ségur

Haunting, I suppose, is one way to put it. The nose on this was dominated by pencil shavings, though there was also a ripe plum note, as well as some green pepper. Basically, everything you'd want and expect from an old Bordeaux. The palate was surprisingly young, showing only up until secondary characteristics, though they were completely consistent with the nose. Hell, the tannins have still a bit of chew on them. There's no chance I'd be able to call this as something as old as 1959 blind. As a side note, it was also heartening (pun fully intended) to see that in all the years since 1959, the label is still the same.

We opened this during the second half of a pretty big wine dinner. This came after the 85 Las Cases, and was edged out by that wine. Slightly moldy on the top of the cork, which was about 70 percent soaked through. We managed to get the cork out, and decanted briefly before pouring.

The color was garnet, with clear signs of bricking on the rim. The wine is full mature, and probably just past its prime. The nose was dominated by red fruit, and a sweetness that overpowered any sense of earth. There were also inviting floral tones.

On the palate this was all about fruit and acidity. Tannins have melted away, and this is drinking very smoothly. Decent finish, and we polished off the bottle very quickly.

If you have any left, I would drink it now. This wine is fully mature, at least the bottle we had, and is drinking really beautifully.

Has a very expressive nose of black currants, cassis, smoky gravel and a hint of mean green. Quite smooth and rich for Calon Segur and very 2000 with a rustic intensity and great concentration along with vineyard typicity. Quit full on the mid-palate which leads to a complex finish with strong notes of dark minerals, roasted peanuts and gravel still with strong tannins. There is a hint of green which is typical of Calon Segur at this age but I would bet on this beauty down the road. 91+

Still quite grippy tannins on the palate, tight and a bit closed but well balanced. Showing good fruit and freshness. Very promising but needs more time. Great finish. 93-94+
