Bordeaux Confidential SF (SF): 60% cab, 40% merlot (they changed in ’06 to more cabernet - new winemaker).
Slightly dull red with a bit of ruby.
On the nose, a bit of banana peel, ripe cherry, well-integrated, with just a hint of oak (not sure I’d really call new oak on this blind).
Plummier, round, softer. Slightly more elevated alcohol. ’05 was warmer. Acidity is bright and balanced, but the overall impression is more generous / plush than the ’08.
I think I prefer the ’08 - it’s more beautiful, more tart, more tightly-wound, there’s more tension in it.

Score: Between 8.5 and 9.

Bordeaux Confidential SF (SF): 82% cab 18% merlot
90% new French oak

On the nose I picture burnt toast that’s glossy with butter, and has savory fruit jam underneath.
In the mouth: Alcohol is well under control. Fresh acidity (slightly elevated). Tannins are what you’d expect. It’s tight - like all the complexity is wrapped up in a tight ball of fruit. The palate releases more than the nose. Black cherry, toasted cedar, savory.

Score: Around 9.

First day: firm, rigid, restrained and unyielding with old world style earthy aromas and flavors....mushroom.

Second day: It is now drinkable. Some bright black cherry fruit appears, finishes with mineral and lots of grip.

Tasted at the Zachys Bordeaux Confidential tasting 5/14/15. This was hollow, not well integrated and devoid of personality. It is surprising given that this is a 2005.

Took to dinner at the Tam O'Shanter. No formal notes, but I found this a bit underwhelming. This was a classic claret that paired well with prime rib. Still, I felt like it was lacking in nose, fruit, and exuberance, particularly given the vintage. Perhaps it is in a closed stage? I'm certainly willing to give another try, but would have scored this bottle in the mid- to high- 80s based on the showing tonight.

Cedar, tobacco, earth and truffle scents work well with the crisp, blackberry. Classic in style, there is a cranberry edge that shows with the firm tannins on the palate in the finish.

This wine although enjoyable appeared a bit tired and beginning to disassemble. Some dried fruit, ground espresso beans, a tinge of oak. The palate was very smooth as tannins have resolved with a shorter finish. For the price, one can find better.

Another St. Estephe from a relatively backward year. This wine is really starting to come around again. This has always been a bit lean, but finally opening up with time to a nice mature Bordeaux

I apparently had a bottle of this last December that I liked, but at this point have no recollection. The cork on this particular bottle was faulty, and after failing to get it out in one piece, I was forced to immediately decant the wine.

Color is still translucent ruby, but a shade or two darker than the '86. Great nose - fruit, smoke, wood scents - quite complex on the nose.

Smoother and more well-integrated on the palate than the '86, but on opening I'm not sure it's any more interesting. A lot more weight/presence, though. We'll see about "final grades" later tonight.

Translucent ruby in the glass; the nose has ferrous notes, blood and leather.

Medium- to light-bodied on the palate; open and expressive, with ripe blackberry fruit - there is a "savoriness" here that is pretty appealing right now. A little acerbity on the finish, but given the slow to relent tannins of this vintage, not bad at all on first look.

Opened for a dinner tonight, so time wise this will probably get 5+ hours of slow-O before serving.

Beautifully mature bouquet with chocolate and coffee as well as red berries. On the palate very soft with chocolate, beautiful acidity and soft tannin, but also something not completely fresh. When fresh surely a really beautiful wine. To be honest this was a controversial wine today. Not everybody is very sensitive to cork, so some really liked the wine. I (and a few others) thought the wine was slightly corked, so no score.

From a magnum. Surprisingly approachable. Deep and dark in the glass, with an inviting nose of grilled herbs and cedar. Some well integrated oak on the palate, with deep dark fruit, smoke and menthol. A classy wine, one built for the long haul but drinking well at present.

This wine is getting old. Low fruit, more secondary notes, some lead, some tobacco. Short to medium finish. Wine purchased on secondary market so this might not be a good example compared to one with known providence.

Vibrant red rim with a dark core. Nose, instant generous ripe fruits and rose petals jump from the glass. In the mouth, red cherries, raspberries, sea shells, and spices dance along the palate. With silky tannins, excellent purity and texture. Long and focused finished. Shows class and finesse. So juicy, like biting into an apple. Love it! This is a wine to buy. Recent investments and smart direction under the newer ownership is making this beloved property better than ever. More approachable these days in its youth, this is still a wine to cellar for 15-25+ years. It’s going to be tough to wait with its beautiful fruit! A classic. Tasted 3 times with consistent notes.A tentative blend of 66% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot, 13% cabernet franc, and 2% petit verdot.
