2001 Château Gruaud Larose

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

Good but drying tannins in the early stages after opening. Never as accessible as the 1999, which I like better. But this was good about 45 minutes after opening. The usual Gruaud Larose flavors of saddle leather and a little olive tapenade, one of my favorite profiles.

Mirrors the beautiful 1983, that tracks in the path of the legendary 1982. So what's the difference? The finish is not a marathon but quite ample..
This is a wine that you either love or don't. If you are a Bordeaux junkie, chances are, I am preaching to the choir...Earth, loam, barnyard, antiqued red berries with acidity to make you go hmmmm.... for a long time...An 81'? WOW!

I like Gruaud Larose. 2002 is ripe, yet to open, nose is ok., black berry, leather, on the palate quite herbal and surprisingly short. I prefer 2004.

Delicious. Still young. With two steaks (Highland and Piemontese). Held its own against Karen's 1982 Calon Segur.

Very pretty, understated and graceful with gentle red and dark fruited flavours tinged with dusty earthy notes, herbs, and tobacco. Flavours slowly build and get more complex with air, and this is lovely to follow over a few hours.

Less attractive as compared with Chateau Poyferre 2007 that night. But still perform very well.. Red fruits with tea like flavor this time, medium bodied, quite balanced.

Best Bottle Dinner at Restaurant Riz in Frankfurt. We drank this Château Gruaud Larose 2000 alongside a Château Léoville Barton 2000. This Gruaud Larose was dark ruby in colour, threw some sediment, and looked more developed than the Léoville Barton. It offered an earthy nose, with black currant, graphite, leather, spices and some cigarette smoke. On the palate the medium-bodied wine showed black currant, cherry, some chocolate, cedar, tobacco and spices, with medium-plus acidity, smooth, medium-plus tannin and superb length. This medium-bodied, elegant, feminine Bordeaux became round, balanced and ultra smooth after some time in the decanter and drank incredible well. I simply loved it! Compared with the Léoville Barton 2000 the Gruaud Larose was more open and accessible, earthier and seemed more developed, and gave more drinking pleasure at the current stage, whereas the Léoville Barton promised better aging potential. A truly great St. Julien!

Excellent aged St. Julien middleweight from Gruaud-Larose. This was a deep violet in color with bricking towards the edge. It was earthy and scented very conspicuously with dried blue and red fruits but they play second fiddle to the sandalwood and floral petunias as well as that forest floor. The wine actually brings forward vivid visual reminders of panting 6 packs of Petunias from the local hardware store of Mega retailer. It was a crowd pleaser for it sophistication and floral tones.

Paired with burger plates for my nephews birthday dinner.

What a pretty wine. So refined. Bravado and baby fat long gone. Great from entry to finish. Just rolls right along across the palate. Great finish. A mature pleasure. Drinking so well right now it's hard to imagine improvement, but certainly showing no signs of wear.

Imbibed in Provence. Deep robe, narrow rim. Leather, dark red and black fruits, graphite on nose and palate. Wonderfully St Julien, elegant with refined ripe tannins, textured and balanced acidity and fruits. Full bodied, with a satisfyingly long finish.

N - very much animale, feral, barnyard, with air melds into an herbal infused licorice.
m - mineraLy, pure, and clear as claret should be. Acid tannin balance nice leaving me to ponder the sour red fruit. With a bigger fruit kick this reminds me of the '82. Light tobacco finish, quit classic, I understood this got panned and I understand why but it's worth a try if at a reasonable tarrif. A habitually underrated estate.

The old adage about no great wines, just great bottles came true for this one... A good bottle, but not great. Still, the earthy, cassis, cedar, cigar box and barnyard scents were evident. The palate was more rustic than usual, with its sweet and tart, cassis character. Oh well, fortunately, there is always another bottle.

This wine will deserve a higher score after a few more years in the bottle. Used the Coravin to check on its evolution. Medium bodied, with a feminine, but pure quality of red and black fruits laced with iron, graphite, and damp earth. The tannin while grippy does release into a smooth finish. There is an abundance of oak on this wine that I hope will integrate and resolve over time in the bottle.

Beautiful bouquet with cassis and other dark forest fruits, graphite and barnyard. Same on the palate, also some bell pepper. Firm acidity and powerful tannin. This will be a beautiful and refined wine around 2020 – 2022+.

Cork crumbled a bit upon opening. Graphite, sweet tobacco, sour cherry, and plum. Lighter than expected, with a demure elegance, if not quite grace, to it. Could have picked nicely aged high-end Barbaresco before St. Julien. Decent bit of sweetness held up over a few hours, though, as mentioned, rather one-dimensional, at least at hour ~4. Cassis and menthol emerging with time. This would be downright divine with any sort of roast with herbs de provence and a starch based side.

Very nice, but decent QPR. Nothing mind-blowing or fascinating about this, and thinner than I would have liked.

Bottled by Berry Bros. & Rudd, high shoulder fill, darkish but transparent colour, good cork, broke down in several pieces, but generaly holding it together. Nose initially closed, but later opening into a mild sweet cherry syrup, stewed fruits, very slight VA. Proper old school claret, mild, light, super silky mouthfeel, very few tannins left, this wine didn't talk loudly, one should listen to its wise wispers, it was a wine for slow, attentive drinking. Generaly in decline and somewhat dried out, but utterly pleasant nevertheless.

70th birthday dinner. Drank with the '79 Haut Brion. This wine initially came across as more rustic than the older wine. This is a big wine with unresolved tannins and copious fruit with a huge upside potential. Lovely Cab nose, well balanced palate and good finish. As the Haut Brion held it's own over the two hour dinner, The Gruaud Larose evolved in the glass to eventually equal the former wine.

If the aromas of a cigar store, cedar closets and cassis, a mouthful of ripe, fresh blackberries, concentration of flavor and intensity, with regal, elegant, masculine textures and a long, smoky, spice filled, currant finish is a turn on, you came to the right place. Avoiding the extreme tannic character of the vintage, 2 hours of decanting was just right. The wine improved in the glass until we reached the last drop. This is so easy to drink, we finished the bottle long before we were ready.
