1995 Château Léoville Poyferré

My tasting note is very similar to Bellissimo's - Good colour, nice evolution towards the rim, very bright. The nose is just gorgeous - leather, pencil shavings, spice box, tobacco, cassis fruit. On the palate good fruit, fresh, balanced with powdery tannins and very good length. Quite youthful in fact. If tasted blind I would have guessed this was significantly younger. As classic as they come, a wonderful bottle drinking very well at this stage. Not sure if it will improve, but absolutely no rush drinking this. 92-94

With a smoky, licorice, cigar box, cassis and blackberry filled perfume, the wine is soft, round, polished and ready to go. It's close to 20 years of age and if you've been holding your bottles, it's really time to pop a cork. The wine was popped and poured.

Urban Heights - 03 Cathelin, 90 LP, 97 Rayas, 07 IX, 11 LPV & etc. (Urban Heights - Bethesda, Maryland): Another wow moment of the 90 LP. I may be lucky but the 90 LP has shown so well so consistently for me. Expressive nose displaying intensely sweet black fruits, cassis, cedar, dark milk chocolate, tobacco and dark spices. Excellent concentration, silky palate, just right amount of acidity to lift up the overall impression, nicely integrated tannins and lovely long sweet finish. This is just simply hedonistic wine that demonstrates all the goodness of the 90, ripe, generous and hedonistic. No need to ponder much, just enjoy.

As always, this is a very good wine. But it never seems to deliver greatness. Maybe I expect too much.

Enjoyed a glass of this for lunch together with a glass of Montrose 05. This clearly was superior in the showing against the Montrose, it had beautiful black and red fruits - really a full throttle wine with amazing power that should age beautifully. The oak here is very hidden (which I like). May I dare say that compared to the 2010 Leoville Poyferre I tasted recently I think I prefer the 2005 quite a bit at this stage...? Although the 2010 certainly has great potential but think there the wood is just not integrated enough for me yet. Lovely stuff the 2005 already today and holding an awful lot of promise for the next 2 decades to come. One that in my humble opinion punches (well) above its RP score.

fully mature and quite bretty, leathery, smells like and old armchair; some purple fruit but not quite fresh or vibrant, plenty of tannic structure, some graphite, good concentration and depth, not bad but lacks excitement.

Toast, coffee, spice and meaty aromas. Fruit on the palate is rich and works well with some tannins that feel in proportion to the fruit weight. This is not a wine that I would enjoy approaching now and hopefully the tannins mellow along with the fruit so it can show its potential.

At Il Mondo Vecchio in Madison with Bob M, celebrating his retirement. Bob brought this one, drank after/next to an 85 Ch Margaux. Paired with a lamb osso buocco - perfect combination for these wines. Splash decanted for 30 minutes.

Color was a dark maroon, no signs of age. Nose was black fruits, along with a cedar/floral signature. Palate is lush and rich, dark fruits, blackberry, cassis, savory/meats. Sweet tannins, rich mouthfeel. Finish of 20+ seconds.

Still very young, drinks well now but will likely improve. Will e interesting to see this wine evolve, given the core/mid palate it will keep getting better. Longer decant would have helped.

Slightly muted nose, cassis, leather, oak and vanilla. very good length. Still quite tannic. I wonder if there's enough fruit to see the tannin out in the long run. I guess it will peak in a couple of years.

Second Sunday Group: 2012 Bordeaux (Mike's): Deeply colored, same as the rest of the wines in this flight. Opens with notes of coffee, raspberry, black fruit and mint/menthol. Not as tannic as F, but it is structured. Flavors of currants, raspberry and black fruits. It doesn't change very much during the course of the tasting in terms of aromatics or flavors, but more in that it "softens" a bit as the tannins seemingly "fade" into the fruit. I'm not used to picking up coffee notes in Bordeaux though- perhaps we have some CA Cabs mixed in? 91-92 pts.

My #6, Domino's #3
Group #6, 52 pts

I did not expect much from an 07 vintage but it all started pretty nicely with a vibrant elegantly fruity nose full of dark berries to a taste that was somehow well-balanced in its deep fruity tones. Vanilla and chocolaty notes were also present though the fruit was dominant. Quite enjoyable and decent qpr.

Melville Clone Tasting AND pre-2000 California Cabernet: Sweet and delicate black currant fruit with a touch of sewer to it.
Plenty of forest floor and mushrooms. Delicate and elegant bottle which doesn't fit my normal expectations of this wine.
It was however consumed from a bottle where a Coravin had been deployed 3-4 months earlier.

Starting to hit its maturity window, though I'd prefer it to age 2-3 more years. Decanted for 2 hours. A pretty wine with good structure... More feminine that I was expecting, but delicious none the less. Black fruit, lavinder, touch of licorice with grainy tannins that should smooth out with age. Secondary characteristics starting to come through with tobacco, cedar, and burnt embers.

Magnum shoot out - France vs. Italy (Switzerland): From Magnum, served blind. The most closed wine of the evening despite 2h decant, opened in the second half of the evening much more. Discrete nose of dark fruit, pine tree, forest floor, some oak. it is immediately clear that this is a Medoc wine that is still young. Very aristocratic, medium bodied, sappy. Great potential. Wait till 2020. 96+
