While clearly short of the 82 Las Cases, this was still a good showing for the Poyferre, having apparently progressed well in the last few years. On the nose, black plum, black currant, clove, faint cinnamon, and little too much wood. A sweetness to the palate with black raspberry, although buttressed by black walnut flavors and faint spice. Well rounded and quite enjoyable.

Bright fruit, light bell pepper, some funk, and sweet spice. Dry earth elements with time. Fewer tertiary notes than the Las Cases. I liked this more than others did. 93+

Opened by Mark at dinner at Salt of the Earth in Fennville, MI. Decanted about 30 minutes before we drank it. Deep Crimson color. Notes of cedar, currants and tobacco. Pronounced but integrated tannins. Round and lush finish. Medium to full bodied. No rush to drink but I thought it was in a sweet spot for my tastes. 94 points

Cigar box, tobacco, cassis, blackberry and wet earth scents pop as soon as the wine hits the glass. The fruit and tannins need more time and air before they can really be coaxed from their deep slumber. On the palate, the wine is powerful, full bodied and concentrated, with refined tannins, plush textures and layers of sweet, ripe, juicy, spicy fruits. If you enjoy young wines for their crisp fruit, you can drink this with a few hours of air, else this very strong wine will be much better, softer and more complex with another 5 more years of age. The wine was produced from a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. The wine reached 13.5% alcohol.

K&L Bordeaux Tasting (K&L, San Francisco): Dense, wonderful nose with deep black fruit, classic St. Julien slate and minerality; palate is full bodied, ripe and plush, fruit isn't quite lasting through the palate, young tannins; finish is short-medium. The nose was excellent, but it lacks a bit of persistence on the palate. 90+

Nose of dark fruit, biscoff cookie, tobacco. More power than other bourdeaux at this price point. Palate of cassis, tobacco. Fairly supple and graceful, but certainly modern. Moderate finish.

Bordeaux 1998 tasting by my friend who calls himself “100wines”: Beautiful creamy and ripe dark forest fruits and perfume in the luxurious bouquet. Same on the palate; creamy dark and red berries, sweet spices, some chocolate, mocha, coffee, cigar box and tobacco as well. Beautiful acidity and a touch of pleasant sweetness. Soft tannin with still a pleasant bite. Beautiful and mature wine that will drink beautifully from now until 2018 or even a bit later. 92 - 93

A bit more quiet than 2 years ago, now you can actually start picking out the grapes on the nose. The 35% Merlot is clearly discernible, but there are not much green cab or lead/pencil shavings. It is all about dark fruit and sweet tannins. Not very typical Bordeaux, but good with food.

Wines that Rock (Craig & Nita's Place): Very dark purple/red color. PNP with a couple of hours of slow-O time. Drank 2 glasses over 2 hours. This was outstanding and drinking in a wonderful already. I would have expected this to need much more air, but no, it was open and beautiful. The nose offers up an intense aroma of sweet intense cassis with a dense layer of blackberry right behind that, graphite, cedar and a floral burst as well. The palate is steeped in this succulent and spellbinding core of layered pure black fruits; cassis, blackberry, kir, graphite, cedar, hints of savory and a long intense finish. Young, vibrant and lush, but restrained and alluring. I'm thrilled to see where this is at and where I think it will go over the next 10 years. 95(+)pts.

mature brick red, yet dark centre with lighter rim; eucalyptus candy, minty nose with a pleasant spicy, almost biting touch on the palate, lacking its former fruit slightly; still wonderfully powerful, impressive length, very elegant; another 100p for the pure privilege, what a flight!!

Still very much too young, but can be enjoyed on its modern fruit. Only gained complexity and nuance on the third day. Before that an dark-fruited monolith. This is probably a 20+ yrs wine.

Like stepping into a cedar closet filled with cigars, #2 pencils, and cassis, this is the definition of classic Bordeaux. Paired with lamb after a 6 hour decant from magnum, this astounded with dark fruit and perfect balance from start to long - very long -finish. As per so many researched recommendations, the lamb paired perfectly with a bit of game to match the burliness in the glass. Still has time to spare, but with appropriate preparation is ready to elevate your evening right now.

This is excellent after a loooong decant (6 hours).

Cigar, smoke, still lots of tannin after the decant. Musty but well developed with enough fruit to be well balanced.

Continued to evolve nicely over the evening. Paired Very well with simply prepared rack of lamb.

Tasting notes from a magnum.

Decanted 2 hours. Wonderfully open and complex nose suggesting a big vintage with plenty of fruit and many layers. Green herbs and pencil shavings on top, beef stock in the middle and cassis and tobacco on the bottom. The 35% merlot shows through with blueberry notes all over. Medium body, quite elegant with refreshing acidity, extremely well integrated wood taking into account that this has seen 80% new wood. Overall very very nice now, albeit just a tad shut down. Will blossom into something akin to the great left bank 1990's I think. 10 years more...half a case left.

A pure pleasure-- and, at risk of adolescent-cide, it is worth trying a bottle now. I recall well my first LP, the 1967 in 1976,and the quality difference is astounding. Rich, full of 2005 fruit With only a half hour decant, little tannin.

Of course a massive wine for this estate and for St Julien, the 2005 unfolds a rich robe of dark dark almost deep concentrated cherry/blueberry in the very center of the palate, with dark cherry and some cassis on the borders, a full finish. The nose has cedar, smoke, earth and of course black cherry.

The only thing missing, compared with its neighbor LLC, is complexity. Much will develop in time but this will not be a first growth in that regard.

But so what? Fine Bordeaux 2005 accessible early is worth a lot.

Purchased as a future.
Decanted for two hours. Drank over the course of a couple of hours.
Color of dark red. Scents of black and dark red fruits. Tastes consistent with scents and tannins were integrated and not overpowering.
Really enjoyed.
