1988 Château Lafite Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

What a beautiful wine! Nose to die for: intense and hedonistic despite the age. Decanted for an hour while we enjoyed our appetizers with a Chardonnay. Many layers over the next two hours, starting with pencil lead, tobacco, cedar and cherry and evolving to crushed velvet sweetened with red currant jelly. Just a great experience.

Beautiful perfumed bouquet with dark cassis, graphite, cedar and cigar box. On the palate black forest fruits, some green bell pepper, graphite, beautiful oak, good acidity and tannin with still a bite. The bouquet is really beautiful, but on the palate the 2002 vintage shows. Nevertheless a delicious wine which is still a bit too young. Around 2016 or 2017 it will probably be a bit better. 93+ for tonight.

Showing very well for the vintage - magnum format may help. Even hints of Laftites pencil shavings - overall attractive aromatic profile. Dont think I would keep.

At a Commanderie de Bordeaux dinner. From Magnum. Medium garnet with brownish hue. Nose of cedar wood, forest, barnyard, tobacco. Medium-light bodied with very soft structure. Better mid mouth presence than the La Conseillante next to it but overall in need of a bit more energy and aromatic persistency. Given the so so vintage also a positive surprise how well the wine did. Drink up

This is not in the same class as the Margaux, at least not right now. Seemed like a classic Lafite, but is very young and tight. Needs a lot of time to open up. Probably best to just sit on the case for another 5-10 years.

Sadly, the first bottle that I opened was corked. This was flawless.

Nice bottle, opened 30 minutes prior. At first a little dusty. Beautiful nose. Palate at first weak, but developed with time, though large concentration of alcohol didn't help it develop.
To be drunk in the next 10 years I reckon.

Magnum shoot out - France vs. Italy (Switzerland): From Magnum, served blind. Medium ruby. Expressive nose of dark fruit with a touch of barnyard, cut hey, minerals and cedar wood. Medium bodied with excellent mid mouth feeling, freshness and great complexity. Long finish. A really grand Pauillac, forget about the price...

From Magnum bottle. First explosive animalic notes of horse saddle, barnyard and earth, lead pencil/graphite, but also tons of black currant/cassis, black cherries, sweet spices, dark chocolate, crushed flowers and later some sweet delicious note of marzipan. Shows more and more different flavors over the course of the evening. It's full-bodied and dense, without being heavy and has medium-high acidity and medium-high tannin that is super velvety. Long and complex finish. Once again, an absolute showstopper. A breath-takingly complex, deeply expressive but elegant and finessed Lafite... it just can't get any better than this...

The color was a bit rusty. But the aroma remain expressive with floral, violet on the bouquet. The after-taste is medium length. The palate is a classic Pauillac, elegant and smooth but was disappointed of the balance was weakened with increase of acidity after 2 hours of an open bottle.

Lafite, as with all Premier Cru, is great in that the savoir faire keeps the wine structure and style very constant YoY. However, when it is a good year, you get to taste the fruit along with the philosophy of the chateau and structure. 1986 was just that.

I disagree that this tastes like a Burgundy. This is a classic Cabernet-driven Bordeaux. Fantastic with a full-bodied Partagas.

A relatively poor showing for this wine. I have not had it for more than a year, and not certain where it is headed. Smooth and sweet nose with the typical background coal dust and dark earth. Vanilla notes as well. Sweeter and thinner on the palate than I recall. Tannins have subdued but are not smooth and the acid is fading. 94-

Looking quite young, with only a minor change of color, the wine is slowly starting to develop secondary characteristics, with tobacco, cedar, charcoal, wet earth, forest floor and cassis in the bouquet. The wine has the smoothness of silk, with layers of soft, polished, ripe, sweet cassis in its long finish. Still young, this will be better in 15 years, or is that 30 years?

Classic Bordeaux wine, but seemed to have gotten lost a bit in the shuffle up against 1998 Cheval that was singing and a great 2000 Latour, but this was a damn good bottle and classic Lafite. Dark black fruit quality with a hint of smoke, black cherries and a mineral driven lead pencil element. This bottle seemed a touch more advanced then I would have expected, yet very refined and regal vs the Cheval Blanc that had a richer denser fruit profile. Like a finely dressed solider vs an elegant queen perhaps. The wine was drinking very well and had a nice finish. While a lovely wine on all accounts, a tad disappointed based on the reputation of the 1998 Lafite. Maybe I need to try another bottle?
