Big nose, with lots of berry fruit (blackcurrant, red cherry), rhubarb, and barnyard. Shows a touch of oxidation, but the fruit is still strong. Palate is funky and barnyardy, with a slick texture, strong acid, and intense tannin. Flavours of horse hair and sweaty saddle, with fragrant notes of cassis, forest floor, and peppercorn.

Very light, acidity still bright, subdued tertiary aromas, fruit had faded but enough to keep it interesting, showed its pedigree, very enjoyable, bought for €260 3 months ago.

Not rated. Opened at Chateau Aiguefonde near Castres in the south of France at the occasion of a postponed family-trip to celebrate the 80th birthday of my mother, born in 1934. Level high shoulder. Turbid, unpleasant smell. Gone. Fortunately the 1934 Haut Brion was in somewhat better shape.

97+ pts

This is all about the obvious potential, as the wine is young, tight and needs coaxing to bring out much of its charm. Clearly, the fruit is ripe, elegant, fresh and present, the tannins and soft and there is length, but it's not much fun to drink today. Give it another decade and call me in the morning.

Looking like a glass of rose hip tea, picture walking into a cedar closet, smoking an Cuban cigar with rocks and rose bushes and fresh cherries on the floor and you get the idea of how this smells. Youthful, spicy and packed with cassis and cherries, there was a touch of rusticity to the tannins, but it was not at all intrusive. I know I've been blessed, as I've tasted this 3 times now. Just when you think you're never going to taste it again, out comes another bottle.

Intriguing wine. In terms of the nose, flavours (mint, cedar, spice, caramel), finesse and complexity it scores 98 or 99. However, as others have noted, this is not a particularly powerful or well structured wine. I can't see it getting better than today but still suspect it will drink well for at least five and probably ten years. It reflects the many other 1999s from Bordeaux I have drank; I think this is a nice, charming vintage but overall on the light side and one that is for drinking rather than keeping.

FYI, I brought this with me and we drank it at the Alyn Williams restaurant at the Westbury in London. Normally they charge £50 corkage fee (typical for top London restaurants) but if you buy another bottle from the wine list this corkage fee is waived, which is commendable and worth noting for people like me who like to bring their own wine. The food, from the tasting menu, was outstanding and a great companion to the Lafite and the other wines we consumed that evening.

Bordeaux in Bern (Bern, Switzerland): Incredibly intellectual. Mineral, mint and tobacco, a stunning Pauillac nose. Really nice spine to this, leafy and minty. It was actually a perfect counterpoint to a far more voluptuous 1990 Haut-Brion. As as always the case with Lafite, you had to "work for it" a bit, and this was showing beautifully.

Nose was great with dark berries, slight earthiness and spice, stone (gravelly and flint) and oak. Then huge palate was extremely closed and reticent showing almost nothing except huge tannins and alcohol. The nose shows all the makings of a very good wine with solid structure in the future even though its not giving much pleasure now. Do not drink till at least 10 years old.

Commanderie de Bordeaux dinner. I brought this as a pirate to the table to share among the 05's. Consistent with my last tasting note, it really delivered. Medium ruby with garnet rim. Expressive nose of cedar, cassis, toast and minerals, very complex, classic Medoc with animalic notes. On the palate this wine is medium bodied and elegant, no traces of the 2003 heat. Silky tannins and freshness, it's all there. A real surprise, simply outstanding. Together with the Margaux 2003 to me the best wine of this "more miss than hit" vintage.

First Growths, Yquem, 100+Madeira (John V.'s): This one stood out for its youth of course but was very interesting. 2009 is such an accessible vintage, but I wondered would that extend to Lafite? Certainly it did. This wine is drinking beautifully right now. The question that we had was is it typical. Jeff described it as a gorgeous 2009 but lacking Lafiteness. I would agree to some extent. Blind with a bunch of the best Napa cabs, it might be WOTN, but would anyone pick it out as a ringer? I doubt it. Inky purple in color. The nose has cassis, cedar, black licorice and vanilla. On the palate, lovely lush texture. Tons of cassis fruit. Some tannins. delicious. Long finish. This was open and drinking beautifully tonight. I think it will still improve a lot and easily last a couple more decades. I doubt I will get to try it again, but it would be interesting to revisit if much farther down the road to see where it went.

Opened at a tasting of 9 first growths (mostly older 70's & 80's). Deep garnet color and showing little signs of age as yet. It was accessible after 2-3 hours of decanting. This was big and backward though and will need at least another decade to show really well. Had a lot of cedar and cigar box. There was black currant underneath and lingering, but it wasn't as on the surface as some others at this time.

Bordal chez RPB (Margaux, Cheval Blanc, Lafite...) (Vessy): Couleur grenat sombre.

Well this was disappointing. Nothing really wrong with it - just dull and boring compared to how excellent Lafite normally is. Classic BDX but muted and lacking its usual depth. I wonder if this bottle had entered its "dumb phase" but based on other recent reviews this appears to be an outlier.

An earthy mélange of cedar and ripe berries on the nose, this wine is smooth, soft and fresh with the aroma of cassis and blackberries. Its refined tannins evoke the silky finesse of a crisp, dark red berry finish. The harvest took place between September 22 and October 10, beginning with the Merlot, followed by the Petit Verdot and representing 38% of the crop. A combination of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, the wine reached 12.7% alcohol. Chateau Lafite Rothschild is often a difficult wine to taste young. This could easily out on weight, improving in bottle and beyond. 94-95 Pts

Powerful and youthful. Dark fruits and flowers of nose. Untamed but oddly smooth tannin with spices and woody finish. Lingering, long. Even just a baby Lafite to drink now, it shows all its potential to be great!

Opened with a floral and leathery nose. Closed on the palate. We enjoyed some Chardonnay and a salad, then an appetizer, then another appetizer.... Long story shortened, it needed some time. Probably more than we could give it in a restaurant setting. After a good hour and a half it began to open up. Leather, coffee, dried fruit, with a hint of dark cherry and chocolate. I left the last third of the bottle with the manager (a friend of mine...obviously) and it was still opening and as bold as it could get. The next bottle will get 3 hours of aeration minimum. I think I have 2 left.
These old First Growth wines are so unpredictable, but so worth it that I just lament having one less of them in my cellar. I love these things. You owe it to yourself to find one, or some and see this unique nose and taste for yourself. There is nothing like them in the world. Its sort of like flying First Class on an overseas flight. Its expensive, but once you've done it you'll talk about it forever.
