1986 Château Lafite Rothschild

Lafite, as with all Premier Cru, is great in that the savoir faire keeps the wine structure and style very constant YoY. However, when it is a good year, you get to taste the fruit along with the philosophy of the chateau and structure. 1986 was just that.

I disagree that this tastes like a Burgundy. This is a classic Cabernet-driven Bordeaux. Fantastic with a full-bodied Partagas.

Decanted for an hour before drinking. Long finish with a mineral ending. Notes of dark fruit when first tasting and then to gives way mineral limestone. No tannins.

A relatively poor showing for this wine. I have not had it for more than a year, and not certain where it is headed. Smooth and sweet nose with the typical background coal dust and dark earth. Vanilla notes as well. Sweeter and thinner on the palate than I recall. Tannins have subdued but are not smooth and the acid is fading. 94-

Wonderfrul berry and tobacco character, with chocolate and cedar. Full-bodied, yet elegant and silky. Beautifully long. This is always outstanding, but sometimes overlooked. '89/'90 Bordeaux non-blind horizontal. Drink now.

Looking quite young, with only a minor change of color, the wine is slowly starting to develop secondary characteristics, with tobacco, cedar, charcoal, wet earth, forest floor and cassis in the bouquet. The wine has the smoothness of silk, with layers of soft, polished, ripe, sweet cassis in its long finish. Still young, this will be better in 15 years, or is that 30 years?

Classic Bordeaux wine, but seemed to have gotten lost a bit in the shuffle up against 1998 Cheval that was singing and a great 2000 Latour, but this was a damn good bottle and classic Lafite. Dark black fruit quality with a hint of smoke, black cherries and a mineral driven lead pencil element. This bottle seemed a touch more advanced then I would have expected, yet very refined and regal vs the Cheval Blanc that had a richer denser fruit profile. Like a finely dressed solider vs an elegant queen perhaps. The wine was drinking very well and had a nice finish. While a lovely wine on all accounts, a tad disappointed based on the reputation of the 1998 Lafite. Maybe I need to try another bottle?

Excellent Bordeaux, but not at the level I was expected from a first growth. I had a much better experience with the Ducru-Beaucaillou 2005. Still very young, it needed some time in the decanter (3-4 hours wouldn't be too much). Smooth tannins, medium complexity (this should change in the next 10-15 years), perfect balance and very good length. Do not open before 2020-2025.

Wow, best bottle of this to date. Profile similar to previous best bottles, superb elegance and balance, much life ahead. A shade more complexity could make this perfect. Underappreciated vintage, a feminine style that suits my palate very well.

Enjoyed well after closing time on a certain curved porch in Lincoln. Elegant and balanced. The fruit was fresh on the nose and the palate. Real vitality and energy. Very smooth tannins. A real treat.

This bottle was sourced from a member of the wine trade with deep contacts in Bordeaux. It was a very heavy bottle and about 70% of the label had disintegrated. The capsule was corroded, oxidized, and brittle. The cork was (amazingly) only a little crumbly and showed Lafite's branding.

This wine was from the best vintage of the 30's and had dropped a lot of sediment. It had a red center and light puce rims. The nose was quite mute at first and this was an excellent sign. Usually, these old wines are rather funky when first opened. After a couple hours, it developed a medium intensity nose of cherries, roses, tea, almond paste, and some Cuban cigar. This bottle's nose was shockingly fresh! On the nose alone I might have guessed the '59.

In the mouth, this wine was round with a light, velvety presence that just flowed over your palate like silk. There were some light rounded tannins but the wine was so integrated, balanced, and long it was mind boggling.

I was hoping this wine would be good, given the sketchy condition of the label and capsule. My hopes were more that realized as this bottle was terrific! This is another example of how fill and color are the most important indicators of quality.

Guangzhou winegroup 2nd Anniversary Celebration:
Hard to imagine after over thousand of wines, this is my first Lafite...I am a Chinese afterall! Slightly cloudy with browning on the side, nose is very graceful just like the palate, very feminine compared to countless read of Lafite being masculinely structured and gentlemanly proper, what I had was more towards a well-educated lady. Not as complex as I would like as some subtle notes are dissolved in the well-balanced integration, but the wine was served in the bottle and not a lot of airing was allowed (hungry label-wolves surrounding the bottle, typical as you would expect from a Lafite). I don't think it outclassed the 64 Rioja I brought that was a fraction of the price.

conclusion: Need to taste the 53, 59, 82, 90 to judge Lafite

Old Bordeaux Dinner (Hong Kong Country Club, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): Light, totally transparent, amber-crimson-sepia hue. Nose is gorgeous: light and fleeting like a water-based perfume, some pencil lead and pencil shavings, tons of fruit still - like confit raspberry. No sign of oxidisation or mustiness. Palate still has a lot of acidic life together with a lightly dusted attic and an old aunt who smells of talcum powder. Lightly resonant but still definitely resonant. For me, a perfect old wine on the nose and impressive for such an unremarkable year. However, this did drop off quite quickly in the glass.

More interesting on the nose than the palate, with its complex array of cedar, tobacco, cassis, smoke, thyme and cigar wrapper scents. On the palate, the earthy, cherry and cassis sensation were marred by some dryness and slightly, rustic tannins. There are vintages when I love Lafite and covet the wine. Those are the years to buy. But there are other vintages that should be sold. 1982 is a year to sell. Its a good wine, but it does not even begin to deliver the level of quality to justify the selling price.

From a perfect case, bought on release and not moved since 1985. Bottle was in pristine condition. We decanted this and drank over two hours saving a glass for day 2. Pretty and somewhat subtle nose of red, black and blue fruits with a distinct violet note that seemed almost right bank. More left bank tobacco and graphite was evident on day two. The palate matched the nose. Incredibly polished on the palate with wonderful depth yet light on its feet. Smooth and long on the finish. As good as this was, I expected more complexity and I believe this example showed younger for some reason. This bottle seems like it would benefit from more age.

We were shocked that this bottle--badly stored for some time--was even drinkable. Cork, saturated, slipped out when detached from the lead seal. But color was correct, deep crimson, with no visible browning from age. Nose had good cassis and some graphite, but not terribly potent. Palate was very fine, with dark fruit and some secondary flavors, and fully integrated tannins; smooth as silk. Not big, and not a very long finish. A triumph of genes over environment, but certainly not the best example of this wine, I'd have to guess (and unlikely to experience the better example of this vintage!)

Tasted along with '83 Margaux, '93 Ridge Monte Bello, '89 Latour, '94 Petrus and '98 Haut-Brion.

Clear, medium intensity garnet color.

The nose is fully developed with a medium aroma intensity. Aromas of dried black fruit, fresh black currants dried herbs, grass, dried herbs, cigar ash, leather, cold espresso, gravel dust and a hint of stable. Complex in all its maturity with small streaks of fresh fruit. I dig!

Dry on the palate with a medium acidity, medium body and medium, rounded up tannins. The flavor intensity is medium(+) with flavors of black currants, green bell peppers, grassy herbs, sweet spice, leather and cold espresso. The finish is medium(+).

This wine is definitely past it's peak but it's still very enjoyable, if you like old wine of course. Very soft and silky mouthfeel.

Flawless cork with deep stained edge. Dark reddish purple in color. Abundant fresh classic cabernet aromas- cassis, leather. Beautiful nose- a long deep inhale showed no sharp edges at all. First sips reveal glycerin, dark fruits, (Will thought he tasted avocado), fat on the tongue but finishing with a freshness, finesse, that begs you to sip again. Tannins are seamlessly integrated. Longer time in the glass heightened the enjoyment- it opened up but never got flabby as one would expect with a great wine. This wine requires more contemplation than what is possible when you just share just one bottle with others. We opened a bottle of Shafer Hillside alongside, which was beautiful. It's unfair to make a comparison, but time in the glass made the Lafite more interesting/complex and the Shafer less so.

The oldest wine in tonight's flight, and the most mature. And even though it might have been tastier 10 years ago, there is still plenty of love left!

Medium+ intense nose with fully developed aromas of tobacco, soy sauce, sesame seeds, cigar box, some green notes, lots of ceder, prunes, and sponge cake. Complex in all its maturity, and a lot better than I had expected. Tasted a '79 Margaux a couple of weeks ago that was far over the hill, and was expecting this to be along the same lines.

On the palate it's quite round, with fine grained tannins, medium acidity and a medium(-) body. Lacking somewhat in intensity (medium) and the finish could have stuck around longer.

There is clear age here, and I would recommend anyone who's fortunate to own a bottle of this to open it fairly soon. Even though it drinks good now, it's probably post peak.
Nose is 94P, Palate 87-88P. Lets go for 91P :)

Big nose, with lots of berry fruit (blackcurrant, red cherry), rhubarb, and barnyard. Shows a touch of oxidation, but the fruit is still strong. Palate is funky and barnyardy, with a slick texture, strong acid, and intense tannin. Flavours of horse hair and sweaty saddle, with fragrant notes of cassis, forest floor, and peppercorn.
