Initially this opens with a nose full of cedar and flat generic Cab Sav aromas. Like cheap young supermarket wine. Double decanted and let air for several hours. Occasional whiff of something more interesting, occasional hint of the fact this comes from superb soil in a decent vintage. But struggles to hold or open up or develop or suggest that the future is in any way more enticing. This is approaching 8 years old from a vintage which should allow for some pleasure by now. Nearly every other St Estephe '08 that I have tried is full of earth and soil and fruit and is just gorgeous, incl a bunch of cheap Cru Burgeois from the supermarket (e.g. the Beau Site is considerably more exotic, mineral and complex, at a third of the price). Perhaps this is way too young, but I've had tight, unyielding but promising wines aplenty - you know it's good, just too young. This is just bland and massively overpriced. Trouble is, this is the fifth or sixth Lafon I've tasted, and none have impressed me. Sadly, I think this house is poor, and living on a reputation from yesteryear. At the price, this wine almost feels like a fraud. Happy to be shown otherwise, but on somebody else's tab... There are far too many good wines I'd actually like to spend my money on.

Not as impressive as expected given the vintage and pedigree. Let this breathe for about an hour and just never really revealed anything. One dimensional throughout the evening. Lots of earth, minerality, forest floor pretty flat and a bit thin.

A deep purple wine. Nose has blackcurrant and spice. Wow...she's tannic, tie your tounge in a knot tannic. I think there's some fruit in there somewhere, but man that's a big wine...finish is...tannins.

This needs 5 years to a decade to relax....had to try it though....couple more bottles...for much much later.

Fine perfume nose. Delicate and complex. On opening prunes and stewed fruits opened almost immediately. Later aromas revealed some barnyard. Chocolate and lamb.
Mouth is a rich and velvety. A little thinness on the palate but generous medium length.

Still a little life left in this well-made St. Estephe. Hints of tobacco and leather underpin the scant notes of anise and blackberry. I bet this was in full bloom about 5 years ago, but it was still a very enjoyable bottle with baby back rib dinner.

Decanted for 3 plus hours, vaguely jammy nose, palate very acceptable though some acidic kick in finish. The wine does not taste exhausted to me and could last until 2020 if kept ideally. Cork was very clean and the 21st century Lafon Rochets tend to have greater longevity than before.

Had this decanting in the cellar for about 2 hours, this is just a delicious Bordeaux, maybe a bit straight forward for some but when you are looking for that old world left bank flavour at reasonable price this hits the spot! Notes of black/blue fruit, dry earth, subtle vanilla and a nice perfume/thyme mix, palate is fresh, fragrant and surprisingly persistent though I could do without having the slight austerity on the finish

Very similar note to the one dated 10/13/2013. A very classic, colder Bordeaux with nice aromatics.

Medium ruby color. A bit shy on the nose, with cherry, blackberry, tobacco, and mushroom. Medium-bodied, light on the attack. Finish a bit short, with some tartness. Silky tannins. Drink now.

Even better than the '95, this is less meaty and cleaner with more focus. Seems to be in a very good place and quite ready for another decade of development. No worries at all about using up the case. Beautiful claret.

Pristine bottle. Rich and mature, lively and Cabernet-fresh, plummy fruit and earth, lead pencil, fleshy but transparent, well-balanced, no noticeable oak, firm but ripe tannins, medium weight and concentration but no over-extraction, spicy depth, still primary, bright juicy fruit, clean and pure flavours, good length. A very successful 2003, avoids the vicissitudes of the vintage but not for the very long term, drink now-2020.

2 hour decant. Showed silky and refined, but not profound. Seemed to open up and do better with the last of our lamb chops. It didn't seem "done" - at the same time, it's probably not getting better. Drink up.

Plum and cedar on the nose. On palate fairly fully bodied; black tea with dry dusty tannins. Long finish. Drinking nicely now if you like austerity and tannins. Possibly will evolve and improve, but could fade as it may lack sufficient fruit to go the distance. When it hits, I really like Lafon Rochet, but it’s not a very consistent vineyard -- despite being able to sit and gaze at Lafite next door.

Yes not the most profound wine ever, but at the price point beats any competitor, nose is loaded with dark blue fruit, ceder, mocha and gravel, palate is fresh with the same dark blue fruit, with herbs and austerity turn the experience quite classic

Dark ruby with no sediment, this wine is essentially mature yet needs a long decant to release plum, date and dark cherry.
Decent claret but not exceptional, I highly doubt more bottle age helps because there isn't much to work with considering 2000 was a rock star vintage.

Average+ at best

I remember some exotic oak and over-ripe fruit scents when this wine was young; those have really subsided now. Rich in flavour but a bit too dark and hard to enjoy. For purists of classic St Estephe today. If it developed more aromatic complexity without drying out too much it could still go places.

still feel this is one of the best priced chateaux in Bordeaux, lots of vanilla, spice, tobacco leaf, with lots of deep dark fruit on the nose, palate is quite rich and upfront with the same dark fruit and tobacco leaf notes through the mid palate but the dusty dry tannins are pronounced on the finish though not excessively just noticeable

The nose showed intense red berry and cedar with minty herbal tones adding freshness. On the palate, it showed soft, supple textures with red currant and wild berry fruits, licorice and tarry tannin providing grip and balance. It was long on concentrated red berry and herbs throughout the finish. The ’06 Lafon-Rochet was very pleasant and easy to like.

Ultimo lunch time tasting (Ultimo wine centre (but now vintage cellars)): Blackcurrant and a slightly inky quality along with crushed rocks, cedar and slight brambles. In the mouth there is dense black fruit then firm drying but fine textured tannins. Long. Very long in fact. Oh, this is rather nice. Lovely in fact.
