This was excellent once again, noticed a black tea component this time that I missed on my previous tasting note.

Already showing a hint of truffle on top of the sweet, ripe, juicy black cherries and plums, the wine is soft, round and fresh, with a sweet hint of chocolate with the red fruits in the finish.

Smashing, old styled bordeaux. A very cool wine, despite all the merlot (90%). The nose is a great combo of fruit, leather, tobacco, licorice. Taste is medium++ bodied, very long, integrated tannin and acid, complex, with red berries, fresh berbs, cassis. Lovely classic claret!

Fresh black raspberries and floral aromas to start, this wine is medium bodied and graceful on the palate. Despite its finish of freshness and ripe scarlet fruits, it lacks the outstanding concentration found in recent vintages like 2009 and 2010. 89-90 Pts

Lovely perfume, the wine shows smoky plum, dried cedar, dark chocolate, currant leaf with a dark mineral core. Well built with lots of structure.

Soft, smooth and round, with ripe, sweet, plums, chocolate covered cherries and truffle notes coupled with a silky finish. What more could you ask for?

Tasted in November 2007, this wine’s 8-hectare terroir includes all kinds of soils – gravel, sand, clay – and exuded a lovely cherry nose, with subtle vanilla. Palate shows very nice tannic structure, fine balance among alcohol (13%), fruit, acidity and tannin.

Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill, pop and pour, drunk over 4 hours. Dark red to rim, lush nose of dark fruits and cassis, earth and cedar/tobacco. Medium to full body, ripe fruit, earthy notes, excellent balance, mellow tannins, medium/long finish, should drink well for 10+ years, excellent.

decanted 30 min (minimal fine sediment). medium red w/clear gold rim; pretty cherries-in-syrup nose, w/earthy, cacao bean & spice accents; med-bodied; dark cherry fruit - quite dry though, herbal tea, some dark mineral & soil components, moderate acids, a bit of oak bitterness on the finish, but well-formed overall & seems to be at peak.

beef short ribs in red wine & oyster sauce w/coriander seeds, pickled ramp sour cream; collards w/benton's bacon; roasted ruby crescent sweet potatoes, tossed in truffle balsamico & thyme

superb! the rest is just detail... rich classy complex nose, showing maturity but no hint of tiredness, perfectly balanced palate, dances around the mouth with lift and elegance but also really fine concentrated flavour, long persistent intense aftertaste - just marvelous and a privilege to drink, on a long plateau of perfection

Took to Smith and Wolensky
Paired with the Cajun ribeye. EXCELLENT!!!
No formal notes. Decanted for one hr, great nose with hints of coffee, cocoa and just unmistakable Bordeaux character. Full body, juicy, fine tannins, long finish. This wine has 5-10 more years ahead.

aroma - almonds, eraser, with air it's a little smoky/wood smoke; taste - hot, astringent, little tar and hard to taste past astringency, chewy; could really go another 10 years easy

Started to open up after decanting for 90 minutes. Complex nose. Flavors of mocha, earth, dark cherry, chocolate. Medium bodied, dark red in color with a 25-30 second finish. Started to fade after 3 hours in the decanter.

Double decanted and left in bottle for two hours before drinking it. It was a nice red color with no indication of moving to Garnet or Brick. The lip was a little thin which came with the age. The nose was black berry, black cherry, plum with some chocolate and hints of vanilla. It was medium bodied with a silky texture and balanced tannins. Mid palate was a little floral, with earth, dark cherry and plum. The finish was mid length in finish. I have one bottle left and will hold for a year or so.

Tasting Group Holiday Party (Lee Road): My first comment said "this is the shit!". What a great showing for this bottle. I have to believe this was at peak. I know this vintage is not particularly supposed to be great for this wine, but this bottle was awesome. The nose is great. Earthy with cherries and black cherries. A bit of cigar tobacco and dust. On the palate, this is layered and complex. Vibrant mature fruit interwoven with earthy funk and wet tobacco flavors. Nice balance. Long finish.

Deep, dark ruby color. Inviting nose of black cherries, plums, violet, and rich chocolate. Smooth on the palate, but still somewhat tight. Ripe tannins, acidity that balances nicely with the fruit. Medium-plus finish. While enjoyable now, this wine will improve significantly over the next 10-15 years.

Bordeaux 2008 (Bordeaux): Tasted at ChΓteau Hosanna in June, this was more closed than in the Spring, its evident volume tightening up but displaying creeping aromas of crushed cherry and showing off a very nice palate texture, with good tannic grain. I am sure this will be fine once in bottle. 90-93+

This is the second time C and I had this bottle. The first was in 2007 off the list at Balthazar. We enjoyed it then, but really enjoyed it this time. Fully mature, barnyard smells, delicious fruit. This is a wonderful Bordeaux that is from a nice, not overly lush vintage. Would definitely recommend.

Andrew's and Howard's birthday dinner (Hippopotamus Restaurant, Wellington): The first of a flight of non-Burgundies, again all served blind. Clearly a Right Bank Bordeaux nose of plums, blackberries and warm earth. On palate, Pomerol is also no surprise, with a flavour profile dominated by spicy plums, cherries and blackberries. The fruit here is very ripe, with lush and quite gorgeous flavours. The scale, structure and fruit weight here are large. On the reveal, the vintage is a surprise however, as the wine seems very young and relatively primary for a 16 year old. A very good Pomerol with many years ahead of it, I would hold for 5-10 years minimum.

Wine dinner with Christian Mouiex. Incredible wine in the lineup of 92-06 Dominus. No notes but will comment. This wine had finess but was thinner than expected. All the components were in place and drinking with elegance, balance and structure. You actually needed time to allow the wine to flourish and by nights end excellent even though it had been double decanted hours earlier it took most of the night to show. Christian commented publicly how much he enjoyed the wine but the 92 Dominus I brought may have been WOTN. Interestingly we didn't taste Petrus at this dinner.
