4/3/2024 - philmtl Likes this wine: NRIt showed so much better than the one we had 3 days ago. Plenty of red berries, spices, red flowers and leather. Elegant, delicate texture, fine acidity and a nice longish finish. Good one. |

3/30/2024 - philmtl Likes this wine: NRVery nice! A lot of structure still on this one and a long life ahead. Red and black berries, tobacco leaf, dry earth and a cool root/herbal note that gives it a lot of freshness (licorice maybe?). Balanced without lacking in fruit concentration and a nice complex finish. There’s a lot to like on the 2011. |

4/1/2024 - geraldsng Likes this wine: NRThe Magdelaine initially came out an unpalatably green mess, possibly because it had been sloshing around the in the car prior to PnP. After some time settling in the decanter it showed its true self. Again unassuming and not a big wine but very correct. Not as much depth and complexity this time due to the brief airing. But I have enough left to let it give a good showing, assuming I remember to prep the bottle properly the next few times. |

3/21/2024 - ekorn wrote: NROne of those bottles that stares back at you every time you open the wine fridge. One of the craziest corks I've ever seen -- almost entirely saturated and black in sections; I think the capsule kept this from seeping. High shoulder fill. This poured dark amber. On the nose this smelled like the leaves you pull out of the gutter when it clogs... and I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way. On the palate, tea and cured meat (guanciale?). Slightly spicy finish. This bottle was perhaps not entirely over the hill (and not without charm) but awfully close! |

2/15/2024 - dbg wrote: NRPurchased 2019 from Benchmark. Dark red core, lighter rim. Beautiful complex nose with moist, dark earth, dark cherry, hints of mint and fresh green notes. Medium body, excellent balance, fruit and earthy notes in perfect harmony. Moderate aged complexity with plenty of acid and fruit to develop even more in the coming years. Drinking beautifully and should continue to do so for many years to come. Excellent. |

1994 Château MagdelaineSt. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more |
2/14/2024 - geraldsng Likes this wine: NRThis Magdelaine was unsurprisingly fully tertiary. Coming from a restrained vintage and a restrained style it didn’t give up very much. Smooth and silky on the palate though. Otherwise it has joined the pantheon of once-individual wines that have ascended into the tertiary apotheosis of forest floor, earth and tobacco. |

2/14/2024 - rawdealbuffy Likes this wine: NRSo much fruit and acid and would not have guessed 1990. Definitely has a long life ahead of it. I was almost anguished tasting so much primary fruit but as it opened up I got a nice lick of graphite, some sous bois, and a fistful of cassis berries. Now I know why Bordeaux lovers geek out about this Chateau. |

2/9/2024 - Tao wrote: 93 pointsRemarkable! Tremendous rubbish colour, old fashioned came to my mind once I uncorked it, seriousness on the palate bordering to austereness, strict fruit selection! At a great point in its life. Very well made, a wine for the nerds allow me to say! |

2/2/2024 - vulgar little monkey wrote: 92 pointsThis was the last wine opened and I paid the least attention to it, regrettably. A bigger version of Magdelaine and with the cocoa dusted fruit and leather with a limestone tinged lift. Very silky. Next time, I'll open a bottle of this on it's own. Not a crime to revisit now, but will probbaly be a wine that improves for a long time. Back in 2015 this was the favorite in a blind tasting 1998 right bank horizontal with heavier hitters (not the heaviest, naturally) and this bottle did nothing to dissuade me from that. |

1961 Château MagdelaineSt. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more |
1/23/2024 - djhammond Likes this wine: 97 pointsUnbelievably at nearly 63 years of age this still needs decanting. After researching the wine, I followed the advice, but was reluctant to give it more than an hour in a closed decanter. It was a big mistake and the first pour was very disappointing. The nose was overwhelming, but the palate and finish were unbalanced, and dominated by harsh tannin. I left it alone for 2 hours in an open decanter, and it was transformative. It underlines why 1961 was one of the trio of incredible vintages from the last century, if not the greatest. The nose is overwhelming with deep aromas of red cherry and cedar, and underpinned with beefy smoky tertiary notes. Once it kicks its rougher tannic edges with aeration, the balance on the palate is impeccable, with a silky mouthfeel, but amazingly still with a bite. I'd love to give this a perfect rating, but the finish, while perfectly balanced, is on the shorter side. Amazingly, i still think that this still has upside. Also, if you can find it, it is still great value. |

1/13/2024 - RockinCabs wrote: NRNose begins with a lot of smoked brisket notes, barrel char and black fruit. Opens up to reveal plum, dark cherry and cocoa notes, but this bottle was fairly bretty. Not in an unpleasant way, but enough to overwhelm the fruit and hide the nuance you expect from this property. |

1/5/2024 - salil wrote: 92 pointsChampagne and claret (John's place, Croton): Always love this wine, although tonight my attention was pulled away by the '89 La Dominique in the same flight. Lovely complex red and dark fruited flavours with more savoury smoky, herbal, and wintergreen notes, very pretty and elegant. Lovely wine, but perhaps lost a bit in a lineup where there were several spectacular wines. |
