The fill was well into the neck; sound cork; opened about an hour before dinner, with no decant. Youthful purple core, turning towards garnet at the rim. Ethereal bouquet, offering up intoxicating scents of ripe dark fruits, lilly, white truffle and crushed stone; just incredible! Medium-bodied, with impressive depth of flavor; great precision and grip; heavenly texture, with a silky and velvety mouthfeel. Long and complex finish, with excellent focus. Truly a monumental wine!

nose - earthy, casis, minty
mouth - fruit punch with a strong undercurrant of mushroom. rather funky. Lots of personality here. Memborable, those I fear it wont go over well with the cali cab crowd

My seventh or eighth experience with this wine, all courtesy of R&D, and one of the best. Deep crimson color with only the slightest bit of bricking at the meniscus. An initial aroma of dried hay faded away leaving black currants, dried plum, dusty earth, dried leaves/forest floor. Nicely integrated showing a mix of red and dark fruit and earth, but has a slight austerity. At the half hour mark, a lovely herbal, dried mint note emerged, but this really began to open and strut its stuff at the one hour mark. Notes of florals, black fruit, dried herbs and forest floor. Earthy black fruit, tobacco, leather and dried herbs on the palate. A lovely match for the rack of lamb with plenty of life ahead.

Opened by R&D at Anvil for Allred's birthday. Typical Bordeaux nose, with a palate of dark fruits and florals. This was fine on its own, but with the lamb, it came alive and was beautiful. Mrs. TLV liked significantly more than I did.

Had a glass for lunch next to Leoville Poyferre 2005. I had a clear preference for the latter (which I rated 95). However, the Montrose is certainly a fantastic wine but it feels that this one will really benefit from another 5-10 years before you get rewarded. It feels a bit (too) reserved and diplomatic right now - compared to the Poyferre the fruit was barely noticeable. Although a good wine I really hope this one improves with age as I have almost 2 cases left. Time will tell... I have a half bottle left of this one as I accessed via Coravin - I will look to give the remaining bottle a healthy decant of 5 hours + (for this tasting it was pop and pour and left in glass for half an hour). .

Graphite, stones, pencil and red berries. Really quite structured on the palate at the moment, there is plenty of class lurking but it is really tightly wound up. Needs a whole lot of time from here.

This was a sound bottle with fill into the base of the neck. The cork was perfect and easily removed. When I opened this up it was too cold so I gave it a couple of hours to warm and open up. Worn leather and dry tobacco meet light hints of strawberry and other light red fruits. Definitely a wine that was better long before this but still and enjoyable experience.

Bordeaux Confidential USA, nose of cigar box, black currants, mocha, and allspice, more of the same on the palate, big body, mouth coating fruit, just lovely, at it's best with a minimum decant to promote the bouquet, almost elegant, great complexity, long, long finish and flavorful aftertaste.

With age, every bottle develops its own personality. This bottle was not at the same level as previous, recent experiences. While good, with its nose of cigar box, cedar, pencil, tobacco, earth, blackberry and cassis, the wine did not display its usual, unreal levels of depth and mouth filling concentration. With 2 hours of air, the wine fleshed out, but not as far as it should. This is not to say the wine is not where it used to be, far from it. I'm simply letting you know where this one bottle was. I'm willing to bet, the next bottle will show much better.

Time, time and time. This needs more time. Right now it's a little bit disappointing. But I let half the bottle in my cellar and drank it the next day, and then it started so show real deepness and complexity.

Therefore let this one in your cellar or give it really a lot of time after decanting.

Cellared since purchase in 1985
Consistent with other's notes, this wine had an odd cork/wetcardboard stink that thankfully blew off. Not a blockbuster 1982 2er or Montrose for that matter, but sound.

Drinking very well. Aromatic nose of black fruit, spice, and a little coal. Palate is mostly smooth with some coarse tannins in the background, but loaded with plush dark fruits and a little funk, charcoal/ash flavor I associate with St Estephe. Moderate length finish. In it's drinking window for sure, at least from 375ml. Better than recent '01.

Perfect condition, not corked, oxidized, nor maderized, and high fill past shoulder. Hate seeing other reviewers rate their flawed wine as fine wine; it skews the true rating.

The wine was brick, body was light-medium, nose was banana peel and citrus. Incredibly long finish. Opened and tasted through roughly 6 hours - showed best about halfway through. Acid level was minimal; sometimes can turn tart to bitter at this age.

Double decanted 3 hours prior to serving. This was very good, but was outclassed by the 75 Pichon Lalande. It is a sold '75, with a bit more structure than most, but was paired with a more elegant and complete wine in my view. Would have been given better press if not for the competition. A-

Fragrant aroma of cassis, leather in a deep red hue. Oak quite forward in a thick mouth feel, and tannin a little dusty, there is lasting fruit flavor from mid palate and feels powerful. Sufficiently complex but too conc for any finesse, maybe time will tell.
