*A beautiful silouhette of a wine that I have enjoyed many times that screams Pauillac, Bordeaux, France, and now DRINK ME! Needs about 45 minutes to swell up, but then it deflates within 2 hours. Meanwhile, a beautiful expression of what we love about Bordeaux and old wines, laden in unsmoked tobacco and cellar stench, with a diminished amount of trapped delicate survivor fruit. We are clearly in bottle variation mode now, where there are survivors and thrivers. This one a survivor....Drink!

PNP based on earlier reviews. Pleasant. Light and thin when first poured improved over a period of an hour and a half or so. Not great but pleasant enough considering it's age. Tannins gone; forest and related notes, not much fruit. Typical old wine oxidation, not unpleasant.

Didn’t expect much from this as was about 30 years past-prime but was really surprised. Still had some fruit left & was the high point of the old bottles I had bought at auction.

Dark, with good fruit, a bit of vanilla and basically still young. Should improve for years, at least based on this bottle.

Noticed leaking cork. Fell into bottle when pushed with light pressure. Poured immediately and found, to my surprise, wine is still lovely, darkly colored, and not oxidized. Go figure.

Holy espresso Batman! Like entering a Havana cafe with rich Tabasco smoke wafting around the smell of fresh ground coffee beans, one of if not the most interesting experiences. At the tail end of its drinking window, opened and decanted for sediment, which was probably a mistake. If I were to drink again I would have strained the sediment as I poured instead of through a decanter. The wine quickly fell apart no more than 15-20 minutes after being decanted.

I really like this wine, but then again, I am a big fan of '88. That said, if you are not a fan of green and vegetal flavors in your BDX, then this is not for you. This shows lots of saddle leather, tobacco, leaf litter and bell pepper notes, with enough cassis fruit to add some balance, and those classic '88 tannins on the back end (which are pretty well integrated at this point). I love it.

Textbook '88 BDX, a vintage I adore. Nose brimming with tobacco, leaf litter, leather and a bit of green pepper. Rustic and a bit vegetal (in a good way), with cassis and herbal notes, and a chewy tannic finish. Classic claret.

Wow very surprised. Sister and her husband had two bottles of this. One had excellent fill and this was that bottle. Medium minus garnet and tawny red. Lovely nose with tiertary notes of leather, damp forest floor and tobacco leaves. Medium minus tannins (5/10) with a medium minus body. A hint of mulled cherry on the palate with tons of leather, truffles, mushroom and earthiness. Medium length finish. Drinking beautifully right now.

Not blind.

Light leather nose. Tawny in color and I was expecting This to have turned given the low mid shoulder ullage.

Surprise this was drinking beautifully. Balanced and smooth!

Light tannins so the tannins are not gone which is great. As expected lots of sediment.

Difficult to score. If you enjoy old wines this is at least 94 to 96.

Tannins 4/10. Hl 4. Fd 3

(Amazingly millennial Drinkers gave the wine the same score as me. Uncoordinated or discussed)

Kirwan.
D'issan.

All were past their peak. The tannins were gone, the fruit had faded and the power was long gone. But at the same time all three were still enjoyable. 89 without food, 90 with food.
Perfectly stored since release.

Very intriguing stage the wine is in, like previous post (lots of cigar). Taste lite green, high acidity and not drinking all that bad.

Drank at friends 60th birthday. Level was into shoulder and cork dropped into bottle as i was screwing in the Durant. So i was expecting the worst. poured immediately and colour was light with amber rim, as expected for a sixty year old. The nose was delightful, still discernible fruits. On the palate, it was light to medium bodied, very smooth with good balance and complexity. But clearly on a very graceful decline. Enjoyable but this wine is past its prime and needs drinking up

30x 1955 & 1961 (mostly Bdx): Tasted single blind. This was a very pleasant, fully mature wine with a nice fruit core and good balance as the highlight. It has certainly not the precision or complexity to play in the league of the very best wines in the vintage.

TN: Not very expressive nose full of minerality and some fruit. With time some unpleasant more oxidative notes. Better on the palate the wine is super fresh and elegant with fine, molten tannins, a good acidity which is probably a bit too pronounced towards the finish and a fine creamy texture. Not overly complex but with fine, ripe fruit, minerality, herbs, leather and a touch of coffee. Ok precision and good balance.

Decanting: Not decanted. Doesn‘t need any decanting.

Grand 1961 vs 1955 vintage tasting (Fribourg): Big 1961 vs 1955 tastings including 10 direct match-ups and 11 individual wines from 1961. The tasting was conducted in flights of 4, single-blind and with no previous decant with all bottles opened 1h prior to start. The line-up was dominated by Bordeaux reds, but also included 5 Sauternes, 1 Champagne, 3 Burgundy reds and 1 Ribera del Duero. The following observations are worth mentioning: i) 1961 generally came across as a better vintage today than 1955, ii) the performance correlated with the 1855 classification, iii) The most outstanding wines were outside of the Bordeaux reds with Veuve Clicquot Rosé '61, Vega Sicilia Unico '61 (both 97) and La Tour Blanche '61 (96) worth mentioning, iv) Top-performing Bordeaux was Margaux (95) in 1961 and Mouton in 1955. List of wines included in the tasting story.

Tasting note:
Fine and elegant showing espresso, a bouquet of red, blue and dark berries as well as smoke. Soft palate with a velvety texture, but maybe no longer the firmest structure. Probably best to drink up at this stage to capture some of the beauty before it's faded away.

Wondeful wine here - as I had hoped from the good reviews. It' super silky will all tannins resolved. lots of cigar. The lastertaste cuts off a little too quickly to merit a 90 but its still classic and lovely. Look foaward to se what the next bottle will be like.

Quick decant for sediment, and the wine is a beauty. Very much alive with blackberries, currant, smoke and licorice, yet that mellow tertiary earthiness. In great condition and showed as a beauty.

Nose: Blackberry, leather and a bit of pencil. Browning notes that were a bit distracting. Palate: Nice red berry fruit, raspberries, mint and leather. Just not giving the complexity or balance of prior bottles. Finish: red fruit, blackberry tannins and some dry herbs.

This bottle seemed to be reaching the end of its peak window. I suggest drinking up.
