Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/28/2015 - wine-strategies Likes this wine: NR

Consistent with the bottle of 3 yrs ago, excellent. Ageing very slowly this, with some fringe signs of additional secondary development; largely on par with the prior bottle and I don't foresee any real (i.e. interesting) developments for at least 7-8 years. Delicious now, superb later. If only I could age as gracefully as this no doubt will. Sigh. highly recommended

Double-decanted at 8am, served non-blind at 7pm and allowed to slow-ox for 90 minutes prior to service.

Dark purple color, with ruby edges. Decanted and drank over 3 hours. Initially lots of smoke and earthiness on the nose, that evolved into red and dark fruits, licorice, violets, charcoal, and espresso. Full-bodied and velvety. Sweet, round tannins. Medium-long finish with lingering acidity. Still quite young, this wine is still drinking well right now. That said, this wine should improve as the tertiary aromas develop further. There is still good balance here. Very good for the vintage.

Tasted right after opening and almost undrinkable so much dominated by wood and without any backbone. A bit more civilized after 4 hour of decanting. Some berries appears and a good acidity bring some balance but it was still dominated by oak and vanilla with drying tanins. Regardind the 97 parker point it has certainly some potential but to be honest a pleasureless bottle at this time. Clearly not one of those Grand Cru Classé that can be drinking young. If I have to rate it I would certainly give under 90 but no note for the moment.

One of my favorite white Bordeaux wines. Yes, it's low acidity and I like it! The Semillon adds a nice slight sweetness and makes it a wonderful summer wine. Hints of honey and caramelized fruits, maybe mango or pineapple.

Dark ruby, purple core. Well above the acceptable level of brett (brettanomyces) scents, i.e., horse sweat, barnyard. Other than that very good fruit/structure and acidity. Let's wait for another bottle.

I've had 5 or 6 bottles since my last note. This has really picked up in the last couple of years - drinks fantastically now but is still improving. From 1/2 bottle needs 1hr double decant. Glad to have another 10ish bottles. My last tasting notes stand. If anything the fruit is getting plusher and sweeter.

Classic. Elegant. Vibrant red fruit. Pretty much has all you'd want in a Bordeaux. Beautifully balanced. At peak.

Opened by Allred. Decanted for sediment only. This was my least favorite of the 1975 bordeaux. This came off as tired and played out. Moderate fruit with plum and saddle leather. A hint of moldiness on the finish. Lighter tannins. 85-86 points.

My 40th Birthday Dinner (Anvil Club, East Dundee): Tasted alongside the Haut Brion, this paled in comparison. Dark fruit more than red, with weedy vegetal undertones and as it sat in the glass, more of a raunchy, horse blanket brett quality. Red fruit, forest floor, iodine and vegetal qualities on the palate, this bottle's best days are well in the past. Others liked this a little more than I, but I found the brett to be a bit much.

For me the clear winner against Chateau Margaux same vintage.
In the beginning powerful still with present fruit scent, ripe and silky tannins but after 30 minutes in the glas very elegant and with a beautiful long fresh finish, at his top 98

Bordeaux Confidential USA. Nose of raspberry, red cherry, and cigar box, more of the same on the palate, medium/big body, much improved since I tasted a few months ago, tasty, almost rich and elegant but definitely delicious on the mid palate and medium/long finish.

Pessac-Léognan Tasting at Wine Watch: Appeared a bit oxidized initially. Cherry, black currant leaf, cooked strawberry, saddle leather, and wet earth. Tannins mostly resolved. Notable acidity. Drink now if you have this.

It has a healthy maroon hue with notes of smoke, tobacco, melted asphalt, scorched earth and red, black and blue fruits. It opens and persists nicely developing more smokey and some truffly notes which greatly adds to its allure. Over time the truffle and rich cherry fruit come to the fore giving this a luxurious feel. This wine has low acidity and a touch of heat, which has perhaps been attenuated with age but it doesn't really detract from the enjoyment of the wine because of the wine's other attributes, it has a decent length too. Maybe what differentiates this from Haut Brion and La Mission is the exquisite perfect equilibrium and tension they have compared to the Pape. But that is probably nitpicking and certainly wasn't 'fixed' from 1998 by making these wines more extracted. Anyhow this is a delicious and super-ripe wine that delivers a lot of pleasure.

Seemed a bit richer and rounder on the palate than my last bottle 10 months ago. Enjoyable Bordeaux but certainly not a remarkable Pape Clement, and at $80-90 not the great value the 2004 vintage can be. Similar / better quality can be found at half the price in this vintage (e.g. 2004 Smith Haut Lafitte, 2004 Leoville Barton etc).

Last of 12, perfect cork and level, previous notes very good or better (other than dip between 05 and 12), decanted hour - deepish, dusky plummy red, some browning, leggy; very tobacco, some iodine, morello cherries over hot earth, classy; medium bodied, long and involving, slightly lacking in fruit, very structured, classy, ready, fine plus (18/20).

Revisiting Graves (Vinexpo, Bordeaux): This is a full on white. Imposing. Loads of yellow fruit. A hint of nuttiness - at least that is what I got from this barrel sample. But there is much substance on the mid palate. Full bodied, long finish, oak derivation. Score higher if you like the style.

Revisiting Graves (Vinexpo, Bordeaux): Well, for some reason this time around - as opposed to my experience in April this year - this barrel sample had more of an extracted feel, as I could notice more the coffee aspect from barrel derived tannins. And yet, the palate is medium plus in body with pleasing dark fruit and ripe tannins. Just a touch drying on the finish, which is fairly long. Lovers of this style should score higher.

This continues developing nicely. The complex nose kicks off with fresh citrus, peach, honeysuckle and vanilla notes that bring you to a fresh, lemony blast of fruit that is kept fresh, due to its ample levels of acidity. This is drinking well now and has room for improvement.

Secondary aromas of smoke, tobacco, wet earth, dark red fruits and lead pencil are already showing. Full bodied, concentrated and rich, the wine is silky, lush and the oak has mostly integrated into the wine, leaving you with sweet, velvety, ripe dark red fruits on the palate.

Heavy bottle. We decanted the wine for ninety minutes before we had the first glasses, followed its development over a period of another three hours, then poured the remaining wine back into the bottle and drank it the next day. The wine was dark ruby in colour and offered stewed dark fruit, dark cherry, blackberry, truffle, vanilla, rosemary, sage and earth on the nose. On the palate the medium- to full-bodied wine showed stewed dark fruit, blackberry, dark cherry, espresso, cocoa, vanilla and rosemary, with medium to medium-plus acidity, medium-plus tannin and good length. The wine was ripe (almost syrupy) and oaky, yet seemed almost thin as in not backed by real substance, tasted a little bitter, I would even call it disjointed, and it felt as if the winemaker had pushed too hard for concentration. The wine seemed less disjointed and a little more complete on day two, but still left me concerned if it has enough true substance and will come around with time. Scoring reserved.
