Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

A good whiff of dark fruit and creamy vanilla in the nose, which after some decanting gave way to some familiar lead pencil and faint tarry notes. There is good balance in the wine, and it wasn't overly heavy. But even for a youngish wine as this, I thought follow through on the palate was a little short, and there wasn't much complexity that could hold my interest for long. Not bad, but not remarkable either -- for now

Served blind; garnet core with some clarity, crimson maroon rim; nose has lots of roses and dried fruit which led me to Italy, tobacco, currant, green pepper, earth, and compost, firm structure, and cedar brought me to a Bordeaux variety so I called Super Tuscan...should have known but he serving temperature was much too warm; nice wine and one of my favorite producers; this is still youthful and should reward more collaring but it is somewhat accessible like many '04s now.

At first whif...Im in pauiilac country. Great wine, but not very complicated today...Unfortnately it needs time to develop, but I doubt that the medium finish will get longer with time...So, drink or hold.

Color: Inky bright purple, sticky long legs. Aroma: Herbal, juicy blackberry, licorice, incense, strawberry, thyme, eucalyptus, violet and hint of oak. Taste: At entry, smoky, gamy and juicy grape juice. Mid-palate, tannic, obvious oak. With air, smooth, sweet and soft tannin. Finish: High acid, white pepper, blackberry and banana, good length. Very big, juicy and powerful wine, with obvious licorice and oak notes but sweet tannin.

Full bodied and intense, this mouth filling, luscious treat is packed with layer after layer of rich, dark, dense, perfectly ripe fruits, soft, refined tannins and the stuffing and structure to age and evolve for decades. You can drink it now, but I’m waiting another 5 years before I start popping corks.

Took 4 hours to open up and then it was beautiful.
Nose is dark with coffee grinds, cassis, dark, dark fruit.
Palate is dark, rich, full and long. The finish has some drying tannins evident.
Would buy again.

Not closed, not tannic, simply a delight, this gentle classic was decanted for an hour and drinks like every wine that cost me $35.00 should taste-wonderfully. Soft and round blackberry, currant and plush plum fruit, laced with licorice, a pop of pepper, cassis, cedar lead to a pure, balanced, beautiful in the mind and senses Bordeaux. This wine is what a twenty year old Bordeaux should taste like and why one should wait at least twenty years before drinking. The finish is formidable and pleasurable sustaining the vibrancy of the fruit and classics of the winemaking into my dreams. Drink old and buy young and your balance sheet and senses benefit.

K&L Bordeaux Tasting (K&L, Hollywood) (K&L Wines, Hollywood): Earthy, with mushroom and truffle notes. Some oak comes through, along with berries like currant and blackberries. Very well balanced and complex.

K&L Bordeaux Tasting (K&L, San Francisco): One of the only wines at this tasting not decanted because it was already showing well. Nose has intense nose with strong soy and umami, blackberry fruit, complex and balanced; palate is full bodied, balanced acidity, tannins integrated and maybe just slightly drying, balanced blackberry fruit; medium length. Very nice, maturity on the nose, ready to drink now but will have a decade ahead. 94-95.

Colour still deep. This bottle rather dense. Simple fruit, cedar, reasonable balance but a bit one dimensional. Not as impressive or enjoyable as previous bottles.

Nose of green pepper, geosmin, animal hide. Supple, but the palate is showing still a lively core with a bit of grip with notes but very reserved palate blueberry, cassis, cigar box, but not terribly delineated but a solid dry elegant finish. No rush here. I can't imagine it getting much better, but it's a solid triple. 89-90

Bordeaux 1998 tasting by my friend who calls himself “100wines”: Beautiful deep bouquet. Très Pauillac with beautiful dark forest fruits, graphite, earth, tobacco and exclusive oak. On the palate dark fruits like cassis and cherries, graphite, licorice, dark chocolate, some bell pepper, rustic impressions and a firm amount of good red fruit acidity. The tannin still has a good bite. A medium plus concentrated wine which is elegant as well. I think this wine is in its perfect drinking stage now, but it can last another 2 – 3+ years as well.

Real cider -> oxidized. Shame, this has lots of fruit and weight and a lot of good going on behind that cider note. Good bottles are probably excellent. £100, 13% NR

"ATS" Wine Group, Spring Gathering: This provided a great counterpoint to the TRB Napa bruisers served alongside. Quite dry but sturdy - Bordeaux profile of currants and plums - it wasn't as forward as some other Pontet Canets that I've liked in the past. Not ready yet? Longer decant needed?

Dark crimson with little red at the edge. Lovely expressive nose of cassis, crushed blackcurrants, tea leaf and cedar. Palate mid weight and very classical Pauillac. Very pure with fine but persistent line of tannins finishing clean. An excellent wine representative of the year and terroir.

Four-hour Vinturi decant; rebottle for transit to restaurant with 30 minutes slow-ox at table. Nearly a year since last try, and no real change. Deep, reddish-purple hue opens to reveal red fruit, graphite, tobacco and distant campfire. Medium body with a palate centering on black currant and slightly-sour berries. Final sips were developing a nice mineral/floral presence. Dusty tannins still prominent; bottle rest should tame this just fine and improve the medium+ finish. Air this out aggressively or wait a little longer.

4th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level - as February 2014 note, but less nuance, altogether too dense and burly, so a step backwards! Very good indeed (17/20).

slightly musty on the nose. Truffles, with a touch of graphite and forest floor. Grippy tannins, sweet, chewy. More graphite notes. Perhaps a little bit lacking mid palate? But still a good claret nonetheless. Long sweet finish.

The nose had typical bordeaux aromas with soil/earth, slight wisps of smoke, dark berries and pencil lead. Most importantly, the nose was soft and supple with very seductive tones. The palate was more of the same with an elegant and silky texture. The wine had very nice grippy tannins. Fruit was dark but at the same time very airy and wispy. Absolutely no heaviness apart from very slight alcoholic heat from the nose. Finish was moderately short to medium and flavours dissipate towards the slightly alcoholic/heat induced end . Alas, I couldn't give this a higher score as the wine did not have the complexity nor the depth that a higher score warranted. All in all, an extremely pleasant, enjoyable and "quaff-ible" Bordeaux wine made by a fantastic house during a dismal vintage. Could have been much, much worse. A very well made wine and certainly a one of easy enjoyment.

Showing its Pauillac characteristics. For me, lots of black fruit, cassis, and black tea mixed with some green tobacco. This is not a huge wine, but has the elegance I think of when someone says "2001 Bordeaux". Had with a big T-bone off the grill, it was hard not to drink the whole bottle.
