Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more

There's plenty happening on the nose with aromas of coconut ice, lavender, honey and apricot jam. It has some serious grunt on the palate with dense, concentrated flavours. It is rich, sweet and honeyed and freshens up nicely on the finish. A really good 2003 and a really good Yquem.

Sure, it was delicious, with bright, golden fruit, nectarine marmalade, golden raisins, and a long, sweet finish. And I'm very grateful for the opportunity to taste it. But d'Yquem (like DRC, to me) rarely has evoked in me the response that its price and pedigree would otherwise suggest. Amali with Bruce, Michel and Stephen V.

Unbelievable. Wonderful. For me at his top but will live at least 20 years more. 99+. For my friend Thomas (his gift, vintage 1975) clearly 100 points. For him better than 1967, for me not.

Creme brulee, dried apricots, honey, figs, dates, vanilla, cream, spices, orange zest, lime cest, ripe mango, Hawaiin pineapple (because for me the best), the fresh young acidity makes this wine a milestone, would like to drink it again in 10 years, perfect bottle, not decanted, but it could be for 2 or 3 hours, gets better and better with time

never ending finish, gorgeous

Magnificent; just magnificent - but ...

Intense, powerful, rich, concentrated - pick your superlative. Extremely complex slightly pithy dried apricots, old honey, some citrus flowers and musky spices; all in an almost thickly textured, alcoholic warmth. A lip-licking tour de force which could never be mistaken for anything other than Yquem in a hot, full-on botrytis year. So, what's the "but"?

I again note the slightly feisty finish, which I often comment on when I drink this wine, especially if it's not really cold. Yes, it's very, very long - and packed with concentrated, marvellous flavours right to the end - but the finish on this bottle (like some others), tasted a touch assertive - even prickly - and perhaps a touch greenish?? These are obviously oak characters, since the fruit is extremely ripe (14% alcohol).

Drunk well chilled but not cold, I've dropped off a point, with a question whether the oak is a touch assertive even for the glorious, voluptuous fruit. From a 375 ml bottle (I've drunk over 1 dozen, since release), more cellaring time may turn this question mark into a complexity plus but, if it happens, it may take a while. The colour is decidedly golden already so it may look quite dark before it's at its best. Alternatively, drink it a bit more chilled than usual.

Served at Alex's house in Bordeaux on the occasion of BWE France Tour 2015. Stunning rendition of a finely tuned Yquem. Deep golden in colour, with a palate that is deceptively youthful. Sweet ripeness of fruits - apricots, Seville orange and tangerine rind - on the nose and palate. Perfectly balanced: textural, backbone and flavours, which persist for many minutes. I now see the beauty and fascination of Yquem, especially having had tried the Climens 98 earlier in the week, down in Provence, which had the fruits and structure but lacked the intensity and backbone that puts Yquem into another stratosphere. Yummy. My wine of the night.

Nice and mature, bright nose of dried apricot and oranges. Shows good purity to the orange infused honey on the palate, with a small undercurrent of freshness and a graceful, medium finish. Unfortunately the acidity is mostly drowned out, but otherwise this is excellent.

NOSE: baked carrots; spicy marmalade; a touch fumey/alcoholic.

BODY: medium amber color; medium-full bodied.

TASTE: oranges; gently spicy; perfumey; medium-low to medium acid. Very nice, but that's about it --- certainly not mind-blowing. Gut impression score: high 80's/low 90's.

{375ml} Bottle and cork in vg condition, color, too. Breathtaking aromas and flavors married to fresh, caressing orchard, tropical and stone fruit flavors that persisted on the palate for minutes. A brilliant future ahead (will likely outlive me, even in this format, and I've yet to turn 50), but oh-so-good right now. d'Yquem seldom gets me to do a double take, let alone justify its lofty/silly prices, but this was just fabulous. Perhaps in the top 3 vintages of the thirty or so d'Yquem I've had over the years. highly recommended

Slow-O 1 hour, served non-blind.

Birthday Dinner (2) 2014 (Jade Palace, Forum Galleria, Singapore): Consistently excellent. On the night, this had a wonderful, wonderful nose, full of honey and apricots, browned sugar and candied orange peel, with a shot of preserved fig skin and just that hint of roasted coconut rind at the edges. Lovely. Beautiful on the palate as well, unfolding as it did with layer after honeyed layer of dried apricots and crème brulee and boiled coconuts wrapped around a beautiful core of gloriously fresh orangey acidity. It was then closed off in an elegant finish that glided effortlessly through the backpalate on a bed of gentle roasted coconut and toasted spice accents. Absolutely delicious, this was made even better by an amazing pairing with lobster and salted egg-yolk. With each sip, the acidity of the wine cut through the dish’s salty richness, while the moreishness of the lobster brought out lovely dried fruited responses from the wine. Wow - this was a fantastic example of a food and wine pairing bringing out the best of both. The 2002 d’Yquem is really growing from strength to strength. This can easily go on for decades yet. Without the lobster, it was still sweet and sticky and deep and still quite primary. Lovely.

What can I say that hasn't already been said? Purity, intensity, freshness, density and complexity in spades. This is as good as a sweet wine gets. The scary thing is, it has not even budged towards maturity. Having tasted Yquem at 80 years of age, current owners will never see it. But who cares as this is damn delicious today?

Double Birthday Celebration for Fiona and Me - 2015 (Alex and Fiona's in AMK): A delicious wine, but not a great d’Yquem – this lacked the botrytised richness of the better vintages. It did have a lovely nose though, with dried apricots met by an unusual floral chrysanthemum notes, the a lift of citrus limes and a some mineral, metal notes. A lighter, more lifted and floral bouquet than I am used to with a d’Yquem, but no less attractive for all that. Like the nose, the palate came across as clean, pure and fresh, with notes of dried apricots and lemons wed to a musky floral perfume. What this lacked it unctuous depth, it made up for with a lovely clarity and balance. It was really drinkable. Right at the finish, more typical d’Yquem accents of burnt caramel and a touch of dessicated coconuts then drifted away into the distance. A very nice wine, drinking well now, but this should not be compared with other d’Yquems – it seems a totally different animal. Incidentally, I had quite forgotten having drank an earlier bottle a few years ago. Back then, I had the same impression of an elegant lightness to the as well, but was more impressed by the wine. It seems to have lost even more weight over the years. If anything, that may be a sign that it is really time to start drinking!

Opened for International Sweet Wine day, this was a stunner. White peaches, flowers, apricot and pineapples were slathered in honey and vanilla. The wine is rich, concentrated, full bodied and luscious, with sweetness, viscosity and freshness. Still young, this is great now and it's only going to get better with 5, 10, 20 or 30 years of age, depending on how you like it.

John comes to town! (Amali (115 E 60th Street, NY, NY)): How can one not love D'Yquem? And yet I'd say this wasn't exactly showing as well as some others that we've had. It's definitely good - loads of different flavors and paired very well with a citrus cheesecake the restaurant had on the menu, but with D'Yquem my expectations are to be blown away and this didn't quite do that.

Man this was good, perhaps the best 1980 Sauternes I have had. Complex aromatics of honey, lavender, dried apricots, vanilla and coconut. It was fresh in the mouth with a nice level of sweetness. Acidity has all but folded into the wine and it is full and round, enveloping the mouth with its sweet nectar. The finish is fresh and length outstanding.

Richter Raritäten Degu Volume III (Restaurant Farnsburg, Switzerland): Mamma mia, this is good!

Rum, creme brulee, candied sugar, black tea. This is soooo rich and soooo opulent. It just doesn't quit. An amazing wine! He only thing that kept it off the 100 mark was that the nose was just shy of the experience in the palate.
