Brutal must on the nose and palate. Smelled and tasted like cow manure.

Stored in cold cellar since release. Perfect fill, cork and condition. Rather dumb nose.Classic flavour with good depth and balance. Had expected something more intense so a touch disappointed. Bottle variation? On this evidence drink by 2020 at latest.

The top of the cork showed dried seepage. The wine however was sound. Clearly not as exuberant as the previous bottles. However, still an amazing drink with leather, herbs and savoury notes.

It's a pity that this great wine wasn't decanted ahead.

Very dark red colour.
Gorgeous nose with lots of delicious funk and earthiness, florals, dark raspberry, leather, sandalwood, spices, licorice.
The palate was on an inferior level compared to the nose. Lean and dry on the palate with earth, minerals, raspberries and cherry, leather, licorice, medium-full body and medium finish.
Can further age many large, especially when in large formats.

Red Wine Tasting Party - Opened an hour before tasting. No decant. Initially, aromas of barnyard funk with hints of dark berries. After swirling and air, the aromas changed to saline like qualities (reminded me of seaweed on the beach). Delicious but still young. Dark red and purple berries. Full bodied and plush. Soft and silky with a long finish! 14.5% alcohol content still shows.

Fresh sweet strawberries and dark meaty plums, like somebody blended together grenache and mourvedre -- hey, that's exactly what this is! There's also a pretty, sweet herb garrigue note. Juicy with good concentration, not especially structured, not super long but pretty delicious. If more Southern Rhones tasted like this, I'd drink them more often.

45 minute decant. Excellent wine that improved in the glass. Ripe with black cherries, blackberry, prune, and hints of licorice with slight leather on the back end. Balance, texture and nose were classic CdP with a pleasant lasting finish. Just now approachable 2015 - 2029.

Decanted 1 hour. Earthy, but very smooth and elegant. Very precise. Seems younger than its current age. I'd say it needs another 2 years and/or a bit more air. 93-94 for now.
30% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5% Cinsault, 25% other grapes.

Bright light red color. Low intensity nose of garrigue (mints esp.), cherry, leather. On arrival, low tannin and low acidity. Drinks alright but not distinguished in any way. Bottle #3 of three.

Beautiful and mature, concentrated bouquet with ripe yellow fruits. On the palate the same ripe fruits and concentration, almost a bit fat, a touch of pleasant sweetness and good acidity. A very beautiful and mature wine at this moment, but this could be a white that can last for another decade or even longer. But why wait….?

I like big reds more than white wines in general, but this is the best white wine I have ever had. Loads of fruit (guava, lemon, passion fruit, mango), mineral essence, oak and acidity in an incredibly balanced and astonishingly mouth filling dry blend of goodness. Definitely not in its dumb phase yet. I absolutely loved it. This Roussanne puts every high-end Napa Chardonnay I have ever tried to shame.

Coffee, garrigue and also some celery in the bouquet. On the palate mature cherry juice, garrigue, pepper, firm acidity and bitterness. Not sure what to think; the bouquet was quite tertiary, but on the palate the wine was still lively and juicy with a good concentration. No score for tonight.

A Pre-Birthday Dinner with the Guys (SY Kitchen, Santa Ynez Valley): More or less consistent with my last note, this wine continues to come off as one-dimensional and a bit uninspiring. A ripe strawberry nose; unobjectionable on the palate, but no nuance or texture yet. Maybe with some age after it goes to sleep?

The bouquet is a bit special and not very expressive, but it shows some herbs and spices and tea. On the palate at first some chocolate, after that some fruit juice as well, white pepper, a lot of acidity and firm bitterness. The tannin is still a bit sticky. Overall this definitely is not one of the better Beaucastel wines I have tasted. Difficult wine. If/when the bouquet opens up and the wine was in an awkward stage now, it might shine some years after this, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Drink it now, or wait a few years without having too high expectations. Then it will not really disappoint too much at least. With the benefit of the doubt 87 – 88 for today.

PnP last night. TN from today.
Med ruby at the core, fading to a med tawny rim.
Nose is med+ intensity with a lot of spiciness, with raisined plums, wet dirt, and a citrus rind in the upper register.
The palate shows a slight frizzante, that seems to have improved since yesterday. Full bodied wine, 14% abv, with med+ intensity, rustic and edgy tannins that are right at home with a plate of food. There is nice med acidity, with ripe blue and red fruit, black pepper, tar, and a rocky minerality. The finish is med length and repeats the flavors from the palate. The rustic tannins persist for 30 secs or so. Nice astringency.
Very tasty Coudoulet, drinking beautifully now, and will continue to drink well through 2020+, but I'll enjoy mine within a year or 2. Very good.

Interesting experience for tasting, considering that many rated this an ideal vintage and how accessible it was in its earlier years. Now it is at first without nose and only a hint of fruit. After 20 minutes, classic CdP mint, vanilla, leather and fruit all nicely balanced. probably indicates it is in decline though it seems early for such a phase to set in. Still a good drink though.

Medium red-garnet color, clear-edged. Nose of rubber hose, roofing tar, fresh mushroom, celeriac, leather, cow's milk, and faint cherry. Low tannin and low acidity. Drinks better than it smells, saved by more fruit than the nose suggested would be present. Bottle #2 of two, from a weak vintage in CndP.

A very nice medium bodied Cotes du Rhone. Bright raspberry, black currant and tapenade all come together to generate a complex palate, which is completed with a rich spicy finish. There's excellent balance here, with enough structure and acidity to suggest this will drink nicely for a few more years. Good value at $25. Personally, I like this bright terrior driven style more than many modern ChdP cuvee's that have too much wood or over ripe fruit.

Opened two (then three) '98 Chateauneuf's for a nice roasted chicken dinner at home with the wife and all the boys. Janasse VV and Telegraph epic failed so had to rescue things with Beaucastel -- while not amazing, it at least performed adequately.

Color: light/medium ruby core -> diffuse garnet rim. Bouquet of plums, sandalwood, kirsch and a little tobacco. Light to medium bodied -- probably the lightest, most Un-Beaucastel - Beaucastel I have ever tasted. Palate of plums and cherries and ripe red fruits; where's the animal and forest floor and leather ??? Good fruit and acid and nice length, I just expect a bit more from the best (IMHO) in what is supposed to be a "great" year.

Speaking of which, after having a number of '98 CDP's over the last few years, I would have to say that, with few exceptions, it really is only a pretty average year. Most of the wines seem prematurely aged and overly light -- perhaps the result of it being a 'Grenache" year? The only '98 CDP that has really blown me away is the Clos du Caillou Reserve.
