1985 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate

Medium dark red-garnet, clouded. Nose of dried cherry, tar, green bell pepper, cow's milk, slightly burned cherry pie filling. On arrival, medium low tannin, slightly lifted acidity. A bit sweet-sour and past its prime drinking condition for my taste, but there's still a lot of enjoyable roasted fruit and truck stop herb farm accents to taste. From my brother's chilly cellar.

Purple plum in color. Nice nose of plum, cherry and earth. Loads of black and red fruits on a refined palate balanced with lead pencil, minerals and earth. No tannin and ready to go. I didn't realize this was the non-estate bottling until just now. Really nice finish and complexity.

Purple color, medium intensity, typical Estate nose. On palate, a bit hot, particularly on finish. Not as well integrated or balanced as anticipated. Maybe will calm down over time.

Purple color, medium intensity nose with black fruit, some leather, maybe even some butterscotch. On palate black cherries, plum, moderate tannins, very well balanced, leading to long, classic finish. Has many years left and drinking beautifully. I have a lot of vintages of the Estate and was beginning to wonder if I had too much, but this bottle made me think that maybe I need more. Part of a vertical with the 02 and the 10. Definitely prefer the older style.

37th Annual Zinfandel Retrospective (R&D's): Crimson core with some bricking. Notes of red fruit and cherry; soft and light. Red berries and white pepper on the palate turning austere on the finish.

Decanted partial bottle and allowed it to breathe for 2.5 hours, followed for another 90 mins. Black fruit, forest floor, currants on the nose; approach is fruit-driven, with blackberry and red cherry compote in the forefront. Nicely balanced, the components are well-integrated and "getting along" well in the bottle. In its drinking window now, glad to have half a case of this.

Coravin'd a generous pour from a 375 and let it breathe for 2 hours. Nose shows tight wood, vanilla, and alcohol. Mouthfeel is nicely balanced with a silky coating; black fruit, brambles, cedar - the fruit component is rich and youthful, thought there's one off greenish note that hits front palate. I'd imagine this has several years remaining before peaking and will try a full bottle later this year w ample decant time.

Detailed notes not taken but enjoyed by all. Typical Montelena Chard, with plenty of life left...probably better still down the road. Well balanced with fruit and acidity to stand up to time in the bottle.

My only regret about the wine is that it disappeared so quickly that I didn't spend enough time with it. Perfect marriage of deep California fruit and old world elegance. Impossible to notice any of the 14.5% alcohol. Smooth and silky with a long finish. I need to find more as it seems to have a long life ahead.

One of the better zins ive had! It's well structured with tannin and acid, is restrained, but displays enjoyable fruit. This varietal isnt one of my favs...too simple?....but this offering shows a sophistication i'd expect from a well made pinot. A pleasant surprise; I'm good for more.

Consistent with my first tasting in January, this wine is good, but not overly big. The wine is best about three hours in, which is when it starts to really open up. Try to be patient and wait for it.

surprised by some low scores on here. classic napa cab from a prestigious producer at a fair QPR. tasted from sample.

drinkible now bout the youthful structure is refreshing given the number of over ripe 2012's i've had. tangy blackberry, blackcurrant, graphite minerality, and good grip on the finish. only going to get better over the next few years.

characteristic of Napa heritage while showcasing the 2012 fruit in a restrained fashion. thumbs up.

KR's Farewell (Imperial Treasure, Great World City): Grumpy and rather unfriendly at first, this opened up with time to reveal a stylish Chardonnay. On first pour, the nose was a strange mix of sulphur, oak and reductive tones. It took some time, say about 15-20 minutes to open up and show a nicer bouquet of cream, yellow fruit and floral aromas along with a toss of roasted peanut aromas. The palate took some time as well, but when it did open up, it came across as being very well-proportioned. There was good depth and weight to its mix of yellow fruit and red apple flavours, but these were also held in a lovely dry balance, with well-integrated acidity and a nice sense of minerality driving the wine into a long finish. A nice wine, somewhat perched between the old and new worlds. While drinking well young, I think it will benefit from a few years in the cellar yet.

I had this wine at a tasting about two weeks ago and thought it was ready and brilliant. This bottle showed much younger but equally brilliant. Forward notes of dark fruit without being over-ripe. The palate is intense and focused; the tannins are well hidden behind the fruit. Long finish.

One to two hour decant. Very dark garnet color. Musty wine cellar aromas. The dark fruit, tobacco and earth is well integrated, but lacks fruit and character. Acidity and strong tannin quite noticeable on a lengthy finish. Hope my next bottle is better.

Currant, graham cracker, cinnamon, very sweetly fruited, concentrated and unbelievably tannic still. Licorice, minerally, resinous palate. Seems to need time still and may take forever to actually mature. Wow.

The appropriate rating for this bottle is NR at present. NO WAY anyone can give an adequate rating even after 3 hours of bottle decanting. This one was popped right next to an 11 Opus One and decanted for about the same amt of time. This was certainly more of an old world red claret than the Opus which was definitely crafted in a new world style that was extremely fruit forward. The fruit here didn't show for at least 3 hours, and when it did, it was quite muted. Menthol and blackberry on the front, leather, pie spice, and oaked up to hell and back on the finish. It definitely had had the density to play with the Opus. Neither one really showed that well due to youth, but the Montelena showed better on the finish where the Opus showed better on the front (after 2hrs). I will revisit this in 4-5 years. Still quite a hell of a wine, but the Montelena 2009 Cab Franc was ready to go and kicked ass today.
