Absolutely stunning! An hybrid between a great Bordeaux and a great Australian. Mature, rich, VERY complex and balanced - not heavy at all. Drinking beautifully right now, but can be cellared for another 5-7 years garanteed.

Great wine hiding under some significant Brett taint, of smoky bacon/band aids.

Jason's Birthday Wine Night 2015 (Dakota Residence): Sweet nose of vanilla bean, very dark black colour, licorice note, the nose is mind-blowing - sweet and creamy, not spicy, chewy and dense, milky tannins, like milk chocolate, high tannins yet smooth and velvety, clearly new world style, fruit bomb, black cherries, evidence of toasty oak. High alcohol that was well integrated. Can be overpowering for some. A glamorous wine indeed! Blown away by the nose this time, and was completely different from the last time I tasted it just months ago (in April 2015). A hedonistic wine indeed. I noted that this was only decanted for one hour prior to tasting. My (and my wife's) wine of the night!

This bottle was opened for about an hour so before it was consumed. It was had after a 2001 Brunello, and a Pride Cab Franc. The Syrah was clearly the most finessed of the three, and would have definitely benefitted from more air. The wine was quite open however and full of flavor. Notes of dark black fruit, and a meaty element made the wine quite enjoyable. Probably will be even better with a few more years of bottle age, however this might be the pinnacle for this wine.

I poured for others blind as the oz wine. This one felt hot and a little jammy but has aged better than most 14 year old grenache. Bright cherry. Sweet plum. Varietally correct. Nothing wrong with this wine but it didn't wow anyone. Probably 4th place out of the 5 wines I poured.

Still beautiful nose reminiscent of shiraz. Taste has mellowed. Little tannin and fruit. Licorice and cherry. Menthol. Many better options from clarendon.

This wine wasn't at all what I expected. My girlfriend commented on how mild it was, and I agree. As EpochMD said in a previous review, it's "deliciously flat." It didn't have that Aussie jammy quality I expected. Instead, it was very restrained and subtle. Delicious, to be sure, but nothing in your face about it. A perfect and delicious sipping wine, it's one that I won't pair with food, but will enjoy while I sit on the deck and read.

Jason's Birthday Wine Night 2015 (Dakota): Tasted blind. Aired in decanter for 1 hour before drinking.
I must first say that there is so much bottle variation between the 3 bottles of this I have had!
Appearance is clear, deep ruby colour with purplish tinges. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of vanilla, licorice, blackberry jam, and some black pepper spice. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol, fine high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, exploding out onto the palate with flavours of sweet licorice, vanilla, blueberries, blackberry jam, milk chocolate. Long finish.
Very good quality. Very obviously an Aussie full throttle Shiraz. Showing no restraint this time. Deserves a high rating surely, but not really a style I appreciate so much nowadays.

Corked but engorged with such power that over the course of the night there were moments when you couldn't detect the TCA at all. Salted pumpkin seeds; caramel; port and autumn leaves; thai spice; a jamminess that could not entirely be held back; ink and grilled octopus. Oscillating like a massive pendulum. Can only imagine what a clean bottle of this would be like.

This is very special wine.. wow... even straight from the bottle with little air in it but it is much better over time.

Blueberry, plum and some mild quince... perfect tannins and drinking at it's best now...

Bloody epic Aussie wine

Opened, Vinturi into decanter and then consumed after from 1-3 hours in the decanter.

Bottom line - deliciously, velvety smooth, but seems to have peaked at least on this tasting, I was expecting something more explosive - and for the cost, I think that some of the younger wines from mclaren vale offer more for the money - Molly Dooker Carnival of Love comes to mind immediately. Still have another bottle left, will give it some time - maybe its just transitioning.

That being said, this wine has a delicious brooding nose which mirrors its flavor - dark cherry, hints of chocolate which remains silky smooth throughout.

I believe that is where the problem with this wine sits - there isn't a beautiful crescendo, decrescendo, finish - it just seems, flat. Deliciously flat, but nothing stands out. I wanted fireworks. All I got was beautiful sparklers . . .

Luxurious nose, open, deep and complex, a whirlwind of aromas, red meat and salted caramel (!), warm spices and green herbs, forest floor, rosehip, blackcurrant, smoked bacon; the palate is big and powerful (14.5% ABV on the label but potentially higher), rich and warm, but does not lack freshness, ripe tannins are mostly resolved but still provide grip, still fleshy after 15 years but transparent and clean, relatively light flavours; relatively light and short on the finish for such a big wine, but retains its balance as the alcohol does not stick out. Fully mature and with a lovely sense of fabulosity.

I have a cold right now so I'm taking my wife's word on this. Velvet like, big tannins, and nice complexity. I don't have much to add because honestly I couldn't taste a thing. I was going to follow this up with a 2006 Winter Cabernet but as I couldn't taste this bottle I didn't want to ruin the Winter cab.

Still quality and still missing some complexity to rival the best CNDPs. Personally I'd hold these to see if that comes with more cellar time, but if you're a skeptic of the house/style, drink em now

Tasted vs elderton command 2005. Astralis was clearly smoother, sweeter in a balanced way, and more complex the elderton is a brute force monster but didn't quite measure up. This is exceptional since Command is an all time favorite for me.

Tasted blind. Dark garnet core with crimson hues. Lifted floral nose along with ripe fruits, cherry and toasty oak. Very youthful and elegant.
Sweet dark fruits entry along with plum, blackberry, smoky oak, black licorice and hints of eucalyptus. Good intensity on palate, smooth and supple, not powerful and alcohol driven. Long lingering hints of mint finish with soft and smooth tannins.
I was quite surprised when the label revealed. Elegant and drinking well but I thought a bit awkward at the moment having lost all its power and in the transition phase. Need more time to gain more complexity.
