2005 Cliff Lede Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District

This bottle spent two hours in a bus and some more being dragged around the city on a hit day, so that may have knocked off a couple of points. Still excellent, though I find the vanilla flavor from the oak a little too prominent. Maybe could go another year or two, but the fruit is in a good place right now and the tannins very well integrated.

Quite delicious wine that initially had an off-aroma of burnt rubber, but this seemed to blow off 30 mins into the decant.
Enjoyed with steak this evening.
Complex and wild, showing off flavors and aromas of smoky licorice, black cherry, rich cassis, and plum, this full bodied wine was supported with ample med acidity. The tannins did not really emerge until 1 hour opened, and were quite soft and resolving, so I am moving my drinking window from 2022 back to 2020 at the latest. Not an extremely long-lived, structured wine, but pleasurable nonetheless.

Drank with friends after a splash decant. Deep purple/ruby with minimal sediment. Date, plum, spice and cassis.
Soft tannins and good structure will hold it in this sweet spot for several more years but why wait?

Really like this. It was good the first day, and perhaps even better the second day. It's in a perfect place right now. The Right Bank style is showing through, with the merlot truly singing with its red fruitiness. I respectfully disagree that it is "sweet." It is resolved, in order, soft and plush, like an aged bordeaux-style Cali red would hopefully be after a few years in the cellar. Nice!

Nice body and balance, very drinkable, with rich currant, peppery spice, and hint of cocoa. Just lacking a bit in depth and complexity, or would have scored higher.

Lovely mixture of spring flowers, ripe melon and mango on the nose, underscored by more herbal notes of mint and thyme. The palate is full bodied and packed with dense flavors of pineapple, tangerine and Braeburn apple along with an intriguing caramel note and a touch of bitterness to even out the sweetness of the fruit. Although it is rather low in acidity for a sauvignon blanc, it carries it's weight very well and does not come across as too heavy. Impressive in length and dangerously drinkable.

Clean, bright. Lychee and a hint of tarragon aroma, also a soft tropical floral quality. Medium+ acid; medium body with a silky texture. Lychee, rich gold grapefruit, herbal finish. Delicious.

This might haven taken a slightly higher rating if it had not followed on the heels of a 2006 Lede Moonlight Sympathy. Interestingly, this held its own in part because 2010 was spectacular. This is similar to the MS in its full body and black and blue fruits. The primary difference for me was that the 2010 was not quite as big as the rock block and was not quite as polished. Still a delicious wine.

Big, bold and opulent. Full of plum, blackberry, blueberry, clove and a bit of tobacco box. Full bodied with a long, lingering finish. First time I have tasted a "Rock Block" with some age and this was silky and polished. Will be interested in seeing how these vary from year to year as the vineyard plots change.

Very enjoyable. Better than last bottle. Much more fragrant and open. Very crisp, nice fruit. Scents and taste of pineapple and pear. Really good with the grilled glazed Berkshire pork chops we had.

Near peak performance. Did benefit from a couple of hour decant as it deepened and integrated with air. Drank alongside a beautiful 2007 Hobbs Napa cab but felt this wine had more energy than the Hobbs while still exhibiting rich fruit and chocolate notes. The finish of the Lede was longer, fresher and more complementary to food. Body was not quite as heavy as the Hobbs and there was an element of baking spices.

A great bottle of wine for a reasonable price. Hard to believe that this is 10 years old. Still has a ton of energy and primary cab attributes. Tannins have mellowed and there is a ton of sweet red and blue fruits. I don't think that this will necessarily get better with time but should hold up for another 5 years or so. Wish I had more of this vintage.

This is a very sexy wine. Purple and opaque. The nose is an intoxicating fruit forward blend of tobacco, cola and sweet cherries. Consistent palate, balanced mouth feel and surprisingly soft tannins for 2011. A very well put together wine. 5+13+16+8=92

From the Winery:

Redolent of crushed raspberries, kirsch, and rhubarb, this evocative wine delights with hints of violets and cedar. Brimming with minerality resonant of its vineyard origins, this wine’s notes of loam and gravel complement the powdered chocolate tannins that create a luxurious and lengthy mouthfeel.

Very good flavor initially out of the bottle. I thought this to be initially past prime. The nose initially was that of wood and earth with fruit notes of cherries and strawberry. Not too much oak. Long lingering finish. Opened up quickly with decant under 30 minutes. Still good, drink up.

This is typically a summer staple for us. This bottle was a bit indistinct. We favor grapefruit and lemon zest flavors typical of Lede. In this case, the fruit was muted but some acidity remained. This bottle favored the more mineral notes of of some Loire wines. Not quite what we expected but still refreshing.

Dark fruited and leaning to the over-ripe side. Not showing a lot freshness or complexity, similar to my experience with the "regular" 2005 Cliff Lede cab. I'd hoped for more.
