2005 Clos LaChance Hummingbird Series Crimson Topaz Meritage

Central Coast Red Bordeaux Blend more

Enjoyed this with my extended family. A fiery garnet in the glass. A bountiful nose of chocolate, berries, ripe strawberry, with a smokiness that came through. The taste was pure strawberry. But think ripe, sweet strawberries as opposed to tart. Very smooth mouthfeel. Elegant. The tannins come into play on the back of the palate. The finish was tart red fruit, with about a minute length. This is CA take on a Bordeaux blend, and I thought the Merlot characteristics really shine on this wine. I was very pleased with this, and look forward to drinking it again.

Interesting and not bad ; but had a perfumey/flowery//lipstick smell/taste to it. Mediium body, nice color. Started off better but just could not get past the perfumey taste. Some Pinots have a very distinctive perfumy quality to them which we enjoy immensely; but it just does not work with this wine. Gave it an 87 because it was interesting - would not repurchase even at the terrific $9 price.

Another good bottle. really ripe, rich, intense and heavy fruit, but seemed to lose it's edge and slipping past prime after being open for a few hours. drink up.

Not bad, for the price a good everyday Cab, nose of black currant, on the palate a friendly level of fruit, nothing complex but a nice quaffing wine. Very little oak noticed, finish short with the fruit persisting through

Tart nose of blackcurrant and fresh baked cookies, with a hint of smoke. Quite tannic with good acidity, blackberry and blackcurrant, and a medium length, earthy finish. 90 now with plenty of potential to improve over the next 3-5 years.

This will be the last vintage for this wine; in future the small amount of Cabernet Franc grown here will be used for blending.
A perfumed nose, hinting at dark fruits, tobacco, mushrooms and sandalwood. Perhaps a faint touch of volatile acidity. Good structure; flavours of brambles and tobacco, with an earthy finish.

2007 seems to be a very good year for Pinot everywhere. This example has a beautiful, fruity nose - cherry, raspberry, clove and nutmeg. Full bodied, with nice cherry and raspberry fruit, a little earthiness and a dry finish. Well balanced.

Lighter on the oak than the 2006 SCM, the nose has lemon, apple and peach. Rich and full bodied with complex, creamy lemon, fig and mineral notes and a long toasty, smoky finish. A knockout.

An unoaked Chardonnay from Scheid Vineyard in Monterey County
Fresh nose of green apple and lemon. On the palate it's crisp and drywith notes of lemon and lime, and some limestone. Dry finish. A little expensive at the $15 RRP, but it was on offer at 30% off in the winery and can often be found at retail under $7. Based on that it's a Value

Picked this unoaked Chard up at deep discount, risky in that is now 3+ yrs in bottle. I tend to associate unoaked with weak fruit. Simply labeled "Silky" on the front label. Would have passed but saw Clos La Chance on the back label, one of my favorite producers.
Bursting with tropical aromas and flavors, mango and honeydew, some pineapple. Surprisingly full bodied, fleshy rather than lean. Very rich. Ripe, high quality fruit is speaking. Mineral and some vegetal emerges on the long, long finish, fools you into thinking it is oaked. Good acid level but could use more. Probably more mellow and duller than a year or two ago, but now very complex, aging fairly well, but may be in decline. Edges into the VG category. 86 now, probably higher a year ago.

Inky dark purple, glass-staining with notes of blackberry, cassis and dried fruit. Long finish on the sweet side. Mouth feel is very viscous almost syrupy but there is adequate acid to balance. The aromas immediately after decanting are intense blackberry a noticable shift in intensity since the last opening of this wine about 9 months ago. After three hours decanted the tannins softened to pleasurable levels. Has some more time to age but it has integrated immensely since summer 08.

Rather disappointing as I clearly remember rating the last bottle 91-92 in my head about a year ago. I think this might be a little over the hill as it was a little flabby and too juicy. The fruit seems to be disappearing and the oak is more pronounced... Still enough fruit left to make it an OK drink, but not nearly as good as it was before. Drink up.

Wow. This wine jumped out at a winery tasting. Recommended for "naked steak." Had with tri-tip. A very big wine with dark garnet color, deep aromas, black fruity flavors to burn, and a peppery finish and aftertaste. I can't name the taste that's different, but it's like a great Cabernet but more fruity, I think.

Following day with cheeses and cracker lunch, seemed hot and too much. But that night with tri-tip again very good, deep berry flavors. A meat wine I guess.
