Very elegant, balanced, but very subtle. Very happy with this bottle though admittedly, it may have been best to drink it either sooner (say 2013-2014) when fruit is brighter, or in a few years. If I do come across another bottle, I'd save it for 2020 or so.

First bottle from 2 cases I bought chez Avril back in the day when Clos des Papes was a EUR30 wine or so. Much better showing compared to the bottle I drank with Niels and Rasmus in Tain in March. This is a very structured wine, the pretty red fruit is elegant and super pure and focused. Clos des Papes in the floral, lighter style, however with so much material and stuffing that this will be a very long ager. This is young for sure. Great wine.

Just a lovely example of everything that makes Clos des Papes such a pleasure to drink. Combining freshness, opulence, ripe fruit, spicy notes and a complex nose, there is ample structure to age and a vibrant quality in the finish giving the lift and length. Still young, this is drinking well today, but a few more years will add more to the wine.

Light crimson in color. 14.5% ABV. Soaring nose of ripe red fruits, grilled meats, white pepper and iron. Dense, concentrated and immensely powerful. Full bodied with more than enough acidity. Super fresh with exceptional balance. Garrigue, kirsch, pepper, raspberries and strawberry liqueur on the palate. The finish is exquisite. For my money there is nothing controversial about this wine. Great bottle from a great producer. Exciting Châteauneuf-du-Pape that will continue to develop for at least another 5-7 years.

This shows fresh red berries, and some spices. It's very fruit driven with a rather toneless mid-palate and a lacklustre structure. It is resting on sweet and ripe red fruit albeit showing good freshness but this lacks vinous character and structure. A disappointment.

Wood, tobacco, wild flower, berries and honey nose. Impressive CDP. Finish was really long enough. I could feel alcohl but it was feel bad. Had power and seemed could be aging just a little while. decanted for 3 hours and drank for 2 hours. Last glass was most smooth and the best. Regret I don't have this in my cellar any more.

Chateauneuf du Pape (Bronte, Sydney): very pale. Lightly fragrant tropical fruits, some lanolin and honey. Delicate, appears tightly coiled although not especially intense. Pleasing ripe fruit flavours of modest intensity, not a lot of length or zip on the finish. Not convinced it will evolve but perhaps in a dumb phase.

Happy to report, that normal service has been resumed here, quite elegant, intense with kirsch and garrigue, this certainly has the vintage characteristics - but is still much to young - in a sort of middle stage. Quite surely, this will become even more elegant and light on its feet.

Pop & poured at too cold a temp, yet still showed well. A touch of oxidative character on the nose and palate at first, but this seemed to blow off, giving way to a refreshing, layered palate of honeysuckle, cedar, white pit fruit and herbs. A vibrant wine, brimming with energy. Not sure how many more years it has left, though, given the appearance it first gave of being quite advanced.

Rhone Tasting: A bit primal at first, but even two hours does wonders for this beauty. Nose of raspberry jam, cherries, roses, rhubarb. Pure, juicy and silky despite the power, this is an elegant wine with lots to show: anise, caramel, smoke, earth, roasted herbs. Long and beautiful, a rich approach but oh so pretty. So much life ahead.

Lovely nose of crushed berries, smoke, and a whiff of caramel. Balanced and elegant on the palate, if showing a bit less structure and more maturity than I would have imagined given the vintage.

Very nice wine. Drinkable now with a 3 hour decant. Dark blackberry with hints of white pepper and cassis. Well integrated tannins. Very well balanced and structured. Much life left but nice now with long decant. Good value

Very nice racy wine with good fruits and fun to drink, but just a tad more straight forward then I would hope. Perhaps a bit closed, but maybe time to drink up?

Medium lemon. Honey, pear, pineapple, slightly petrol. This is my favorite of all the 4 vintages tasted together - 2013, 2009, 2005 and 2001. I asked Paul to sell me a bottle but he said all his wine in the cellar is for tasting only. There are no labels even!

Medium lemon colour. Even more of those honey suckles, apricot. Very round. I told Paul I prefer the 2009 at this stage, 2005 is showing much more, but perhaps for me, quite difficult to imagine what kind of food it can go with.

Pear, honey, apricot. Six grapes (Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Picpoul) all vinified together. Paul-Vincent Avril has never acidified because he has lots of Picpoul and Bourboulenc in cement. No oak, no MLF. Big and full and spicy. Very special. Very different from the oaked Roussanne of Beaucastel.

I really like the 2009 when tasted together with 2013, 2005, and 2001.
