Enticing purple in the glass with a a clear rim. Nose of grass, black and red berries with hints of earthy spice, vanilla and cinnamon. Tart and sweet in the mouth with plenty of tannins and oak flavors with a finish that is savory (cloves) and tart (plums). A bit warm on the finish and over-structured as far as the alcohol is concerned. Definitely need to decant for a few hours. I did not decant but the wine tasted a lot better on the third day than it did on the first.

Fles 1:

Oog: Helder robijnrood.

This one had seen a few days of heat last summer so we intentionally compared it to a well-stored bottle. This slightly cooked bottle seemed a little beat up and slightly stewed compared to the other.

Drinking beautifully with a decant right now. Deep but with great range and finer, delicate notes.

Decanted 2 hours (optional). Follows my note from '08. Still deep reddish violet. Dark fruits, dried herbs, mocha and slight earth on the nose. Velvety rich fruit that is nicely balanced with tannin and a small dose of acidity. Paired great with grilled steaks, but also did well alone as we all lingered around the table. This is what it's going to be but should hold for several more years.

Strange notes of green pepper - as if the blend includes unripe Cabernet.

Fles 1:
Oog: Helderrood.

South or Sweet (Q2 wine party) (The Apartment): (Wine #9 - South America) The baby of the Don Melchors, but with quite a bit of promise. Good blackberry flavor, but overpowered a bit by the tannins which I suspect just need some more years or a good decant. Also the 9th wine in a line-up of pretty intense reds so was a bit harder to parse through.

South or Sweet (Q2 wine party) (The Apartment): (Wine #7 - South America) I really liked this wine and think I would have liked it a lot more with a decant. It just came across as a touch young (probably because the tannins were almost chewy). Some good fig notes, less ripe blackberry. Dusty. After swirling it for awhile I get a touch of cranberry as well. Part of the 3 Don Melchors each of which I thought showed pretty well.

South or Sweet (Q2 wine party) (The Apartment): (Wine #2 - South America) Don Melchor was the star of the wines today - showed up with three different vintages. This again was opened about 3 hours before drinking, but without a decant. Compared to the Vina Alicia, this was much more fruit forward, get some raspberry, decent tannins but they are not overpowering, very soft wine. Towards the end I could taste the alcohol so here again maybe a decant to let some of that air out. One of my favorites of the day.

Raspberry notes were prominent, never had a wine that had such a distinct flavor. Tannins were smooth, wine had a more juicy soft feel in the mouth. A very pleasurable easy drinking wine, good balance. Finish was long, slightly tart.

Almost a year since last try, and this still looks like a newly-minted bottle; no bricking or any outward signs of bottle age. Dark fruits and berries, wet leather with cassis and a barely-discernable green streak. Classic Chilean Cab flavor profile: boysenberry, plum and black currrant with notes of cocoa, espresso and fig. Aging nicely, although I expected oak influence and and tannin reserve too both be a bit more subtle by now.

Dense and saturated purple. The dominant combo on the nose and palate is chocolate and raspberries - rich, but not oaky. The alcohol is noticeable in the full mouth-feel, but the wine doesn't register as hot. The acidity is also high for a New World Merlot, which sets this apart from the fluffy chocolate teddy bear Cali Merlots that live at this $12-15 price. Subdued tannins impart moderate structure, and the finish is medium/medium-long. This mostly plays one note, but it's a good note.

First one of these in almost two and a half years. Consistent with my prior note, but not as tight and restrained as last time. Still a young-looking, semi-opaque magenta in color. Offers pretty, complex aromas of crushed dark berries, cassis, earth and a hint of vanilla on the nose - along with a noticeable amount of heat. Full-bodied and very rich. Almost syrupy. Loaded with tangy boysenberry, plum and dark currant fruit, which shows excellent depth and intensity on the mid-palate. This has definitely unwound quite a bit since last time and finishes with fine length - but is still noticeably oaky and tannic. Outstanding, but still not quite the great wine I expected it to be. Will save my last remaining bottle for another few years.

Off the list at a restaurant in Dorado, PR. Pop and pour and drank half of it, brought it back to the hotel and had more over a 2-1/2 hours total. An outstanding wine. Surprisingly approachable. Smooth soft sweet tannins. Lots of red fruit with plums and berries and some sweet cherries. Some acidity and some coffee in the background with above average acidity. Add five more years and this will get even better and ZI think more fruit will emerge.

Popped and poured. Aromas and flavors of black currant, blackberry, dark chocolate and spice. Firm tannic structure on the palate. Leads to a medium to long, soft, dry finish. Full bodied. A solid wine.
