Decanted 30 minutes. Delicate nose. I don't think fruit is primary on the nose. Vanilla, butterscotch and cured meats. Some cranberry, underripe cherry and a bit of red apple. On taste, the fruit is primary. Cranberry, tangerine and blood orange. Some leather, tobacco and caramel. Medium plus acidity, Medium finish, medium plus complexity. This is a fantastic wine.

Great nose of dust, wood, sap, pine, pepper, warm rocks. Fat fruit on the palate and in the mouth. Strong tannin balanced by equally strong fat, concentrated jam and silky notes. Black and bitter coffee notes swim under tart berries. Finishes with long notes of pepper, spice and mature fruit. All the while, intense yet nicely balanced. A lot going on.

2007 Copain Syrah James Berry Vineyard

Tasting at Copain: Second of two syrahs poured at the winery, and a stark contrast in terms of size, structure, and profile to the High Rock Ranch. Compared with a bottle of 2007 JB I opened last month, the fruit seems to be a bit riper and more out front here - fig, currant, and blackberry liqueur along with black licorice, tar, and assorted savory notes resting underneath. Full bodied and powerful with plenty of stuffing and grip.

Tasting at Copain: This was a nice transition from the flight of pinots. First of two syrahs sampled at the winery. Modestly proportioned with juicy dark red fruits, flowers, and a mineral underpinning. Not the most complex or layered syrah in the Copain portfolio, but it demonstrates nice energy and verve.

Similar tasting experience to the one I wrote up here back in July 2013. I know we served this a bit too warm, which for me is not the way I think we should treat pinot noir. But, some prefer wines at room temp, even PN, which in this instance I know was the case for where the wine was hosted. The net result of that is the wine comes off a bit clunky, roasted and over-done, meaning any delicacy of nuance from the AV PN fruit is lost at this kind of serving temp. I do though think that drink temp aside, this is just bigger Copain and I'm not going to get fired up for this bottle due to how it shows, in general.

Tasting at Copain: Final wine of our tasting at Copain. Bonus pour, enjoyed while relaxing in the Adirondack chairs overlooking the valley. Really makes an impression with its verve, briskness, vibrancy, modest proportions and cool, precise profile of citrus zest, white flower/honeysuckle, and minerals. Very nice; I regret not buying this wine during the spring release.

Tasting at Copain: Tasted alongside the 2012 Monument Tree and 2012 Wendling at the winery. Lightest in color of the three wines. Lighter bodied, ethereal, supple, pretty, elegant, fresh, and vibrant with high toned red fruits (thinking strawberry and maybe even a bit of citrus peel) along with spice and forest floor notes. There is a nice spine of acidity that really gives the wine lift and verve, but the softer and rather gentle mouthfeel leads me to suspect this wine may be best consumed on the younger side.

Tasting at Copain: Tasted alongside the 2012 Monument Tree and 2013 Wentzel at the winery. The most structured, tightly coiled, and seemingly deepest pitched of the three wines. With that said, this drank beautifully with exquisite texture, balance, energy, purity, complexity, precision, and length, offering up a profile of dark red apple peel, rhubarb, exotic spices, and a mineral underpinning. Highly recommended.

Tasting at Copain: Tasted alongside the 2012 Wendling and 2013 Wentzel at the winery. This showed the roundest and ripest of the trio with red apple and red cherry along with notions of forest floor, clove, and just a hint of pinot funk to add complexity and range to the aromatic and flavor profile. There is a nice spine of acidity that provides a counterpoint to the core of bright, juicy, and delicious fruit.

Modestly proportioned, softer textured, supple, tangy, and juicy with an aromatic and flavor combination of red fruits, spice, and forest floor. Displays that Copain signature sense of purity and verve. Terrific food wine that is very much open for business. From a 375ml purchased off the list at Passionfish.

The last 2 bottles of this have been used for wine dinners and so it felt like time to review and enjoy it singly. Opened an hour ago, just let it chill down a bit and poured off a small glass on what is a warm OC evening. The last 2 bottles I have mentioned this wine has not stood up as well as I wanted but this bottle, perhaps enjoyed singly, is showing far better. Has the racier core of apple and slate that I would expect with this vineyard, showing much livelier and not heavy or one dimensional as it did last summer. This is a lot about apple, green and yellow, plus lime. Has a little or the orange oil note, and then a finish of slate and green apple skin. This is showing pretty driven and leaner styled.....retasted a day later to check my perceptions. Remains really beautiful, with an added note of pear inside the fruit profile and a little bit less slate and cut. Actually, with the pear and less chisel, this drinks more complete today so the air in my view helped the wine to round out. This is in a great spot and yet with the acidity and slate, I don't see this fading so additional age is going to be fine. Excellent.

My last bottle. Color is starting to show just a hint of brown, but she is still quite fresh. There's a cool menthol tone on the nose, along with a hint of rootbeer and rhubarb. The palate shows a lively side, and is lithe and acidic. The fruit is all red apple skins and dark cherries. This is in a nice zone right now, but could still go for a while yet. Very pleasant and complete wine.

Good second bottle after a nice white burgundy. The element that allured me to this wine was the nose during the IPOB event. I applaud Copain for making a distinct product.

Dark garnet red. Rich dark fruits, plum, tomatoe and black olives on the nose. Wine still has significant tannins which compete with fruit for your attention. After 30 minutes open, I decided to aerate and decant to smooth out the tannins. It helped, but they were still very present. Saved some for second day and it improved a little. A lot of work to get this wine showing well. Not my favorite as a stand alone wine. Was excellent with pork roast. Better as a food wine. Take note, a lot of sediment in the bottle.

Really wanted to love this, but wasn't sure in the end. Maybe it was just too tightly wound and we drank it too quickly. Am I crazy or did I detect a faint whiff of oak on this rosé? Must just be me, but something was hiding all the lovely, underlying fruit notes. Not sure what exactly. Oh well. I think it is quite complex for a rosé, maybe will give it another try.

Once again, just gorgeous, and my WOTN. Expressive red fruits showed a lot of florals on the nose and generous yet juicy palate flavors. A bit of earthiness made this feel like a complete wine, very harmonious and early in its prime. Certainly supports my feeling that this is year in and year out one of the top American pinot noirs being made.

This wine took a while to get out of the tannic hot phase it was in but it was singing today. Sweet red fruits, lots of meat and beef blood, an obvious Syrah profile with what also seemed like some Mouvedre. Very nice wine but still doesn't compete with the saxum of the same year.

Decanted for just under an hour before tasting. Medium purple core, pink rim. Like the “En Haut”, this too displays a wonderful bouquet of black cherries, raspberries, dry soil, sea breeze and exotic spices. Impressive concentration and length, but (again like its stable mate) delivers a finishing burst of acidity that in my view threatens to compromise balance. Very nice with fatty barbecued pork chops – more demanding after dinner. Personally, I wouldn’t wait more than three years before finishing off these 09 Copains as there’s not a single molecule of sweet juice to spare – shedding fruit will quickly turn this into a fairly masochistic drinking experience.
