1998 Corison Cabernet Sauvignon Kronos Vineyard

Napa Valley more

Quite tight and tart for a wile after opening. Needs at least 90 min if not 2 hrs to open up. Then: nice mineralogy, soft tannins (as should be expected at this age), vanilla, mocha, and mellow ripe berries. An easy drinker on its own without food.

Almost downright gregarious for a young corison. Showing plenty of ripe (but not overripe) cherry and plum with menthol and a slight savory sage and green pepper notes. Nice if not amazing. Certainly a hold now, but probably an earlier drinker in the Corison portfolio. 88-90.

It's a grippy, powerful drink now. Rock, bright blackberry, savory sage. A bit brooding really, but in spite of the intensity it's almost playful and graceful in it's power. Surprising of the several vintages of Corison, this was the most powerful (though haven't had the cool 2011 either). The tannins show a slight dustiness but they aren't so severe. It's the good kind of structured that is so refreshing. If I had a case my vices would surely get the better of me and knock off a couple of these in the short term. I think these cooler vintages play right in to Cathy Corison's hands. Really nice and pure. 92+

Some underripe red fruit which isn't terribly delinated, but it was just bottled a few weeks ago. A certain richness gives a touch of tension with nice mineral note on the finish with good persistence and enough acid to pull it off. Softened edges from the neutral oak elevage as well as the sur lie. I'd drink hold to next year/fall. Of the three cab roses on our brief time in Napa (all neutral oak), this was the best and I think it will be a touch better in 6 mo. 88+

Plum and a touch of cocoa, but really it's the green pepper and herbal notes from prior notes has now transitioned to tobacco. Still plenty of fruit, but it could be a touch brighter. Nice dusty tannins are fairly supple. Not overly precise, but it's reach a gentle period were it is full bodied, pure and elegant, if not terribly delineated beyond that with a moderate finish. Certainly this is drinking well now. Drink now or hold.

Bright red fruit with green pepper nose. Lots of juicy ripe (but not overripe) cherry, green pepper, river rock with plenty of acid and a firm tannin with a persistent mineral finish. Medium bodied making it much lighter than the cab. While there's no mistaking this for old-world Cab Franc, but it was really a delightful, juicy, refreshing, but transparent effort. It's approachable now, but I might hold for a couple years.

This is from a single block just north of Kronos in St Helena. I like this a lot and a bit more than the previous Helios red (a syrah from Atlas Peak).

Decanted about 45 minutes. Cork came apart. Still shows nice fruit. Tannins are very smooth. Definitely the highlight wine of the evening.

At the Blue Bottle in Hopewell, brought a Corison as one of Valerie's favorite CA Cabs. The Kronos Vineyard designation is special, in my experience. Cork broke (waiters fault), decanted and drank at restaurant and home. Took about 30 minutes to show and really opened up after that..

Dark maroon to the rim, little signs of age. Floral nose with plums, cassis, dried earth with mild touch of toasted wood. Palate is really rich and expressive. Blue/black fruits; blueberry "milkshake" texture, black cherry sweetness on the mid palate. Rich and fruit forward wine, but not over the top.

Well done - Cathy Corison's wines very consistent in my experience. The Kronos wines holding up well. This bottle suggests another 5-7 years at this level...

Decanted about a half hour before dinner (grilled petite sirloin, oven fries and fresh broccoli.) Still magnificent. Still getting a nice graphite/cedar note, along with lots of dark fruit. This was my last bottle - wish I had one or two more!

Good enough, but very ordinary. Accurate - cassis, touch of cedar. High acid. Not green, but something about the subtle thinness of the midpalate and the tart finish suggests that this was picked a wee bit too early.

Good color. Fresh cassis fruit, hints of cedar, lots of pleasant sage and rosemary. Nice, elegant cassis fruit on the attack, with good gravelly/earthy underpinnings, but while the tannins aren't drying this out, there's a big acid twinge in the back end that cuts off the mid palate. This was probably better five years ago.

On the front patio with neighbors (Our home): Old school Cab done well in a great vintage. I wondered how the crowd would like this, but it was very popular. The nose has cassis with a very pleasant green bell pepper component. On the palate, clean with tightly layered complexity that unwinds in the glass. This was pop and pour. The wine seems to be nearing peak but no hurry on this one. I think its still available from the winery and might be worth stocking up on a couple more.

Decanted for two hours. Raw coconut, polished rock, currant and cedar. There is a salubrious plateau during the long, silky finish. I love the paradox of concentration and floating aspects. I would still wait a year or two. Drink 2017 - 2027.

Tacking on a couple more points from my last bottle. This is a great expression of Cabernet with rich blackberry, camphor and pencil shavings. Richly layered and textured with a smooth balanced finish. Drink now-2030.

Restaurant pop/pour. Still showing a nice medium ruby color. Very complex bouquet- blackcurrant draped in secondary & tertiary depth of olive, eucalyptus, dill, tobacco, dried violet and tar. Showing impressive juicy primary black fruit on the palate, with notes on minerality and layers of full depth similar to the bouquet. Juicy (medium+) acid complimented by round silky tannins. The complexity continues through a full finish. Quite striking. My WOTY so far.

Thick, cloudy, inky black with purple edges. Lots of sediment in the neck of the bottle. Blueberry thickets, saddle leather, and pungent spice nose. Medium to full bodied, blackberries, black cherries, very well integrated sweet tannins, pipe tobacco, and a long, full mount finish. Surprisingly fresh for its age and appearance. A treat.

Opened up quickly . Old world nose - faint tobacco and a bit dusty. On the palate creme de cassis, cherry liquor. Faint tannins. Light mouthfeel.

If you like fruit notes, drink up! But there's still plenty of acid for a longer haul.

Considering the fact that the "professionals" said the vintage was OK at best and at this point most of the wines were in decline (and some undrinkable), this one is a gem.

Its appearance is indicative of its age - a relatively dull garnet with very narrow rim. The nose is strong, with black fruit, plum, leather, earth and vanilla. On the palate, that black fruit comes across vibrantly, saying "I'm not so old" and is complimented by those same secondary and tertiary notes that were on the nose - leather, tobacco and vanilla. Fine grained tannins, medium(-) acidity, medium body round out the wine. Everything is in harmony. While I think there are still several years left in this wine, I don't see it getting any better. I am really digging this wine. Outstanding.

Fantastic, balanced and integrated wine. Beautiful deep, clear ruby color. The nose was cedar, pine, leather and red fruit market. On the palate, the acidity and tannins provided a steady and pleasing structure that carried fresh fruit that was balanced perfectly with the savory flavors.

Beautiful is the word! Nothing intrusive but everything is in harmony, and it sings harmony not only by itself but with everything else on the dinner table. Velvety tannin and just the right amount of acidity frame up beautifully concentrated fruit. As it evolves in the glass, it does not skip a beat in balance and elegance til the very end. Graceful finish just lingers and lingers...
