2012 Cornerstone Cellars Chardonnay Willamette Valley

2/11/2016 - Christine Havens Likes this wine: 90 points

The 2012 Conerstone Chardonnay exemplifies great varietal typicity—this is classic Willamette Valley Chard, and nicely done too. Fresh aromas of pears, yellow-skinned apples, lemon zest, and toasted hazelnuts are nicely woven into this well-balanced white. The oak is very integrated as well, it’s not at all over blown, and a lively burst of acidity, redolent of lime skins and minerals leads into a long, 30+ second finish. 13.5% ABV Sample

Pours a deep purple with aromas of purple fruits tinged with green herbal notes.

Flavors follow the nose and the tannins are well-integrated. There's a harshness to the palate that wasn't there in its youth. My last of a case -- the wine was smoother and more red-fruited in its youth but last few bottles have been less enjoyable.

On the ripe and modern side of Oregon Pinot Noir. I needs a year or two to come together, but even now it delivers delicious fruitiness, cola, herbal teas, and a touch of earth. The acid is medium plus, the mouthfeel supple, and the finish substantive. Hold until 2018 and drink through 2022-2024. 91-92.

Great structure to this wine. The balance would suggest a blend. Plenty of cherry and blackberry notes with some back end of cedar and leather. Really nice right now but will last for a few more years easily.

I am not sure where this wine is right now or what it thinks it needs to do, but I think it's right at the top of the hill now. Definitely not down the hill yet, but I don't see this one improving more in the bottle than it has right now. Nice slightly bricked red hue poured into the glass with a slight touch of brown and ever the slightest amount of bricking noted. Dirty raspberry nose and palate. Very acidic opening yet at the same time quite dense. The wine at first was a little nitrogenous, but after 30 minutes of air the fruit was very expressive. The mid-palate turned slightly darker. The middle had a tart cherry at first, but this changed to more of a cherry liqueur note, with a green herbaceous nature chasing it around. The finish is chewy, not very tannic. Doesn't linger much. My last score on this wine was an 87, and I think that this is where it still is. Well made wine, but not great or outstanding. Drink now or in the next year.

Cornerstone's 2012 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is generously styled, with a perfumy and overtly expressive nose of rose petals and anise inlaid by roasted strawberry, black cherry and blackberries. On the palate, its got depth, dimension and power to spare. Fine, dusty tannins and medium acidity frame out supple black and red fruit that gracefully tapirs to a lengthy finish. Really lovely, and perhaps more reminiscent of cool climate California Pinot Noir than Oregon. 14.3% ABV Sample

The biggest of the flight, medium to full bodied, dark garnet colored, complex, tightly wound, firm and concentrated yet nicely balanced, expressive black berry, black raspberry and currant fruits highlighted by tones of black tea, tobacco, graphite and notes of anise and oak on the lingering firm tannin finish.

Looks like I'm just about a year from the last note, but it's drinking similarly. Still a ruby color with a clear meniscus. Aromas of red and dark red fruits, lilac, sourdough bread, and light herbs. Lush on the palate with dark and dark red fruits, light herbs and spice, and a mineral streak throughout. Give the next a year or two.

nearly identical to my note on 3/04/2014, except I found this bottle a little thinner. Would please a broad group of palates. Great PnP. Did not improve with air.

Tasted out of a Coravin since too many people say it's still young. For the most part the other reviewers are correct, this wine can use another 2-3 years in bottle but it is perfectly approachable now for those who like a younger profile. This certainly is nothing like a 2010 Barolo which still taste like a steel beam.

On the nose this wine explodes with fresh spring flowers and sea breeze. In the mouth it starts with creme de cassis, followed by toffee, ending with strong burnt wood. Tannin is still very firm but doesn't get in the way of the fruit, that's why it's approachable now but will likely be better in 2-3 years.

BTW this is the lightest color Napa Cab I've seen in many years, it's more of dark ruby than some CA Pinot Noirs.

Pours a deep purple color tinged with ruby with the slightest bit of bricking. Aromas of sweet purple fruits, still seems very primary.

Flavors of plum, blackberry, black truffles and a green bell pepper note that comes to the fore on the long, lingering finish. The tannins are still gently prickly with medium acidity. Ready now but should last through the end of the decade. In a very good spot right now.

A big cab for Napa cab lovers. Still really primary. Full bodied, low acid, moderate tannins. Big black fruits, cassis, vanilla some earth and a nice finish. Not my style, but well made.

Inky and lush, the 2012 Cornerstone Cellars Stepping Stone Cabernet has a nose that seemingly builds with intensity, with dulcet tones of crème de cassis, blackberry financiers, incense, dusty earth, and vanilla leading into an expansive wine on entry. Velvety, fine-grained tannin, and a lovely creaminess at the core lends weight and richness. Finishes with a pinch of tellicherry peppercorn and cedar. 14.7% ABV | Sample

After reading other notes I expected an unappealing fruit bomb but I didn't find that to be the case. This is a nice medium bodied PN with blackberry fruit profile, with a touch more fruit than the Bing cherry PNs on the market

This offering is a little thin. It really did wake up after 1-2 hours, but was rather slow getting going. But after it does, it's a nice little representation of Cab Franc, but the wine is actually rather young even still. At this point I can't really determine if the wine just needs more time or if it's "all it's got". Poured a "pinot-ish" color into the glass. Notes of lilac, black cherry, herbs. The palate on the entry is black cherry and a little acid. The wine was medium bodied. Mid-palate is where a slight tart cranberry started to show, which mellowed quickly. The notes in the middle of this one are quite interesting. The finish is mysterious. Everything from cinnamon to graham cracker to raspberry to earth to a hint of vegetal-ness. Good finish. Complex. A little acidic actually on the finish. I think this one has quite a bit more life in it, but I'm not sure really how much. I don't know if I agree with 2017 as a drink by date at all, and think this one has at least 2018/19 if properly cellared.

Poured by Alex Yan from an etched magnum. Thank you Alex. Dark bright red color in the glass with no bricking, nose of old style cabernet with ripe cherry fruit and hints of dusty earth, more of the same on the palate, about two years passed it's peak even in magnum so suggest you drink up if in your cellar, very tasty, easy drinking with prawns and fresh vegetables, touch simple, long fruity finish.

Tasted at Brooks Pinot Envy 2015. This is a really nice bottle of Pinot. Dark color with black cherry and blueberry on a strong nose. Medium body with a good balance of acid and tannin. Really nice finish.

Upon initial cork pop and pour, this one didn't go with olive tapenade, didn't go with pork, didn't go with herbed veggies. Had a very medicinal character to it at first. Came back about 90 minutes later to a wine that had developed a cigarette ash quality. No bueno. I think this one is corked, or done. Not sure which one, but it was NOT welcome tonight!! I still hesitate to call this one "done" but this bottle was certainly so tonight.
