K&L Bordeaux Tasting (Wine and Wall, SF): Structured and ripe but fruit is a bit dirty and finish is short and a bit bitter. Rustic and simple. Tastes like a fine $20 Bordeaux (this is about what it is). 8-8.5

Tour des Deux Rives, San Francisco: This wine did not excite me. It was extremely shy on the nose and also not giving much on the palate. I got some red fruit, oak, and earth, so there was complexity but it had to be coaxed out of the glass.

Aroma with tobacco, violet, spice. Powerful young wine with hard tannin. Dark in colour with great intensity. Nice cherry oaky finishing.

Medium body and finish. Hint of rosemary and red berries, cherry, and vanilla. This wine kept getting better the longer it stayed in the decanter. Drank it over a period of three hours. There is still plenty of life left. Tannins are still too prominent. Needs another 4-5 years. Potential to score 94.

Decanted 1/2 hour. Pure Bordeaux. Light bodied, herbs, green notes. Silky smooth, nice finish. A nice acidic backbone.

Decanted one hour, enjoyed over another two. Packed with all that classic medoc stuff. Deep dark cherries, funk, mint, coffee, brown sugar and spice. Medium bodied and fresh with plenty of soft yet firm tannin. Great balance and polish. Still young. I'd give it another three years before opening another bottle. Lots of upside potential. It felt like it was holding back quite a bit. Unsurprisingly, great with steak, a baked potato and roasted tomatoes. A gift from Mizuki's dad.

No formal note - over dinner. Pretty consistent with previous notes - ripe, well balanced, approachable with a still quite firm tannic backbone and good length. Should improve. 91-93

Open bottle 1 hour
Dark red
Blueberry, strawberry, berries, lots of fruit on nose. Flavors, raisin, blueberry skin, chocolate, red cherry jubilee, delicious.
Nose is amazing, flavors are a bit underwhelming, but still nice. Should probably be decanted a bit.

Tasted at Total Wine in Chantilly, VA on Friday, March 4, 2016. Very decent wine for a difficult vintage. Young but showing some balance. 13% alcohol.

Complex nose of dark berry, anise, and graphite, with a nice light frame of oak. Loads of acid and tannin on the palate with a good dose of fruit underneath, well balanced with a promise of more. A beautiful wine enjoyed with rare lamb chops and Brussels sprouts. 50 + 17 + 15 + 8.

I think this is about as good as it will get. Some maturing but possible I guess. Ruby in color. The nose has cassis, cigar tobacco and slight funk. Medium bodied. On the palate, some depth and complexity. Tannins are pretty much integrated. Nice finish. A nice wine, but given the vintage and performance of a recent 2000, I had hoped for more. As it was, a pleasant Bordeaux experience.

This has matured worryingly rapidly. Classic St Julien fruit but its structure has fallen off a cliff! Perhaps a slightly off bottle?

I adore the first wine of this chateau and have drank many vintages from the 80s, 90s and 00s, but tried nothing later than 2002, so the second wine is a great way of trying the house style whilst the big brother ages.

Lots of wood shavings on the nose. Succulent blackcurrants in the mouth. Very light tannins already well integrated. Very easy to drink. Reminded me of a Lalande Borie 2006.

Very fine - only just starting to become mature. Will hold at least 10 years.

Score is on the conservative side - there is still upside.

I forgot that I had one bottle left from my 6 pack that was bought as futures. This has been a pleasant wine on each occasion, but now it is fully mature and a charming wine. I was a little startled when I popped the cork. It was saturated and there was no aroma. A taste proved it was just fine. Plenty of dark fruit, and showing no signs of the roasted fruit that is often in the bottle of a 2003. Tannins do not interfere with the Bordeaux characteristics. Was a lovely dinner wine with our traditional day after Thanksgiving dinner of filet mignon.

Opaque purple color with a reflective edge. The nose is powerful and attractive with hints of violets, black fruits, mocha, and eucalyptus. This wine is unmistakably full-bodied, muscular, with a dense structure, good acidity, and fleshy texture. Flavors of black and red currants, damp earth, dark chocolate, licorice, espresso, meat, and suede leather form a formidable core that gives a whopping mid palate extending to a long, mentholated finish. This is quite a good show from Château Ducru Beaucaillou - powerful and well-integrated. Drink now with a 15-minute decant to until 2023.
