Brick red with orange edge.
Aromas of blackberry jam, blackcurrant preserve, blood orange, pine wood, cinnamon and hawthorn.
Mellowed lively tannins. Cherry acids and cranberry bitterness.
Medium body.
Palate of cherry jam, candied orange, juniper wood, caramel, forest floor and serrano ham.
A fully mature, lively and utterly complex wine with fading ripe fruit, well structured with elegant acidity and a beautiful and elegant spicy finish. Drink within 5 years.
Tasted alongside Guigal, La Mouline 1994 and the present wine is more mature, slender and elegant but not as powerful and grand as the matched wine.

Excellent-
With only an hour decant this was probably not showing itself fully. Also, I'm not sure if these go through a closed phase, but that's a possibility. It was showing a bit tight and the profile was upright with savory to slightly sour and even saline along with just-ripe black fruits. I might say it's a bit austere, but still there is sufficient fruit and a drive to it, that is it's not pushing you away.

Went really well with a daube, such a nice pairing with the stew's inclusion of olives and a bit of orange zest.

Next one 2027?

Short and to the point notes: Oily and slight touch of cream followed by a burst of lemon and oranges. Then a sharpness to finish with hint of pineapple.

Not as good as the admittedly more expensive Guigal La Doriane.

Limited notes taken. Opened three hours in advance. Drank a small glass. Pours a pale gold. Explosive aromas of baked apple, poached pear, honeysuckle, beeswax, and charred orange peel. Dense, concentrated, and richly textured.

Northern Rhône Red tasting event. Apparently bottle was opened at 3pm.
I got to this bottle at around 6:20 I guess. (Bottle half full)

Ruby.

Nose & palate - Nope, not yet ready.

Second pour after 7, (bottle 80% gone). Begining to show.

Love it. fruit, perfume, black pepper. Not a huge amount of meat. Nose and palate big showing very well.

Warning, hedonists run away.

For me, a fantastic archetypal nose with black olives, white pepper, roasted rare meat, violets and lavender. Mid plus weighted with power coupled with a sense of balance. This has depth and is in a more focused savory and meaty more than fruit driven mode. A little bacon fat made me think Cote Rotie more so than Hermitage. This is unnapologeticlaly old school delicious Northern Rhone syrah drinking at absolute peak. Not a blockbuster, but beautiful, honest, and harmonious. I love this style. While I doubt it will fade soon, I also think this is as good as this will ever be. Drink up. Carpe diem. 94

I guess late 90s really well made traditional Cote Rotie.

Syrah at Cabotte (Cabotte): Quite a brambley nose. I thought this was a bit corked, as did circa 50% of the table - though our very nice sommelier was confident that it wasn’t. Whatever it was, it didn’t feel quite right to me; pretty acidic, fruit quite muted and just not that balanced.

Très puissant, alcool et barrique à l’ouverture.
Robe grenat, nez d’abord sur les fruits rouges puis fumé, olives, jus de viande, speck, la bouche est joliment équilibrée, très concentrée mais pas forcément très complexe.
Le vin s’améliore encore en accompagnement du cœur de rumsteck qui dompte ses tanins et fait ressortir une belle acidité qui manquait au début.
Termine presque minéral.
Superbe vin à boire ou à garder.

Pale golden/yellow. On second day after opening. The nose is tropical fruits and marshmallows. Pineapples and mango. Medium in body, and somewhat surprisingly acidic. The palate introduces some more tertiary elements, as well as some level of minerality although the fruit is forefront. Feels like now is a good time to be drinking this.

The brief was for an "oily" white, and this broadly delivered. Very aromatic, heady nose, with some jasmine. Buttery on the palate, but with a bitter bite towards the long finish. It's tasty, but I'd find it hard to drink more than a glass or two given the intensity.

It's a vintage thing I believe but combined with the winemaking.
Still too much hands on winemaking along with too much extraction and heat.
Jam and alcohol, lacking the cool Hermitage Syrah I prefer.
This acts more like a Southern Rhône wine made from Zinfandel or perhaps as a California made "wine".
No finesse to be found.

So good. Well aged and throws a large amount of sediment - almost vintage port like. Deep black fruit, with rustic edge, leather and tobacco. Deep in its drinking window.

A monster tasting at Laszlo's: Blind. Pepper and graphite, feels lively and bright. Palate is classic Syrah style with that pepper and black fruit profile. The spice and ripeness mesh well together and this is already drinking well.
