2012 Denner The Ditch Digger

Paso Robles Grenache Blend, Grenache more

7/1/2015 - Snoman Likes this wine: 92 points

Great example of a California CdP blend, and typical of Denner, shows terrific winemaking, richness and clarity of varietals in the blend, intensity of flavors, and well-balanced all the way through the medium+ finish. Mouthwatering acidity and a touch of tannin predict a 10-year aging window.

Please don't spread the word, as Denner doesn't produce enough of this to go around! Other notes reflect the character of this dense-but-delicate-but-rich unusual single-varietal Carignon from Paso Robles. Expecting a rustic, Languedoc or Gascogne-styled result, we were totally blown away by the quality, balance, taste and flavors in this big surprise from Denner. Dark purple-black in glass, a glint of ruby on the rim, aromas of black and red fruits on the nose, and literally explosive in the clean and intense flavors of black and red currant, plum, blackberry and wild berry from the get-go. Sounds sticky, but it's not; just in perfect balance with a hint of silky tannin, notes of vanilla, and a muted acidity in the background to hold everything in balance. Terrific now, and likely good for another 10 years or so. Super-long finish, and due to its balance, very food-friendly, particulary with grilled pork chops, probably a hanger steak or filet, or red-sauce pasta dishes. Run, don't walk if you can find some.

Precision is the word that comes to mind.

While the wine is definitely "new world" there are some great old world, earth attributes to the wine: notes of earth and herbs collide with the dense, pure fruit of this wine. Everything feels like it has a measure and timing. This wine is very well made.

Notes of black fruit on the nose, perfectly ripe blackberry, dark plums, vanilla, lilac, and evening sage. Full bodied on the palette, yielding clear and concise layers of earth, fat, pepper, and brambly fruit.

Amazing Grenache based wine. The fruit and flavor is amazing. I am slobbering over the glass, it's so good.

Wonderful fruity nose. Tastes of tropical fruits, peach & apricot. Got better as we drank through the bottle. The flavors really came out as it opened up and warmed up. Suggest decanting it for a while before serving.

Light straw color. Floral nose of honeysuckle. Tastes of pear and peach with a dash of minerality. Very smooth texture with a bit of viscosity. Let it warm more to cellar temp for best enjoyment.

Well structured, but with a bit more finesse than most Paso wines. 95% Syrah with a touch of Roussane and Viognier to soften.

Color: dark ruby core -> medium-deep ruby rim. Bouquet of raspberries, cherries, cassis, a little iodine and some sweet vanilla. Palate took about an hour to come around and at that point presented a smooth, lithe, soft expression of Paso Cabernet. Very red-fruited to my palate with distinct gingerbread overtones. Quite lovely and a stellar first effort for this particular bottling. Tannins present but soft, appropriate acidity, good midpalate weight and nice finish; think of this as your classic Goldilocks wine: everything is 'just right.' While this has great balance and IMO will last several years longer, there is no need to defer enjoyment since I think this is about as complex as it's going to get.

C enjoyed more than I did. Bright fruit but a bit heavy and a touch of alcohol coming through. Amazing to compare to the Dirty and Rowdy Mourvedre from a couple weeks ago (which I greatly prefer). How can that be the same grape?!?! ha!

Juicy, dark fruit on the nose along with a little creme brulee. Hint of ripe blueberries on the mid-palate. Pepper and maybe some grilled meat on the palate. Still tannic. Probably a little young, but this wine is going to be really outstanding in 2 to 4 years.

Bottle showed some seepage at the cork and had a little "funk", but not off putting. Really enjoyed this with sausage and peppers. Bottle was opened yesterday, and today, it really showed well. The 09's still need time I think, maybe another three years even! This GSM is just fantastic, and every year is different, rapidly becoming one of my favorites, and can't wait until these mature fully. Not going to describe flavors, as I've been over severed today....

Light gold color, quick legs. Very soft nose shows some minerality, citrus, hazelnut, a touch of jasmine. Not a lot going on here, really. Maybe past prime, not sure. The palate is pleasant enough in structure and balance but I just wish there was a bit more fruit essence. I don't think there's enough stuffing for longer term aging. 4+9+16+7=86

This was a very nice GSM+ that paired perfectly with the pork braised in apricots, raisins, and wine. It had a nice balance of earth, tar, and mixed dark berries. Fine acidity on the finish and not too much heat.

Oh boy, 2 hour decant, and then what a great wine. Sweet cherry tobacco on the nose and then ripe blackberry and anise on the front palate. Finish is long and elegant with cedar and tar, great tannin structure with plenty of life. Still a good 4 years remain here, I think.

With dinner at Island Prime in San Diego celebrating our daughter's masters degree. The bottle was "double decanted" per Anthony Yount's (winemaker for Denner) suggestion. Color was a dark red-purple all the way up the glass. The nose alone was intoxicating! Luscious ripe dark fruit (currants, blackberries, Royal Anne cherries) with an overlay of baked cobbler crust. Very full mouth feel, yet it was not overpowering - very well balanced. On the palate we got more of those wonderful dark rich fruit flavors, with some dark chocolate dust. Finish was very nice. I have always liked this blend, but I think this vintage may be the best I have tasted yet. Good thing I have more!

Popped and drank, non-blind. Wonderful wine! Inky and full-bodied with a nose of dark fruit and floral accents (seemingly from the stellar Denner Viognier component.) Hits the tongue with blackberry and dark fruit finishing into earth and a touch of pepper, lingering for a while. Smooth and well-integrated tannins, with great mouth-feel/texture and balancing out nicely. This is evolving very nicely as compared to a year ago, much smoother, will still benefit from a short cellar nap (1 more year.) Low alcohol content comparitively to many HUGE central coast syrahs at 14.3%. No alcohol bomb here! Stellar effort here.

Drank during a tasting at the winery. We had two separate pours from two separate bottles. While I can't remember if the 1st bottle was recently opened, I noticed that our pour from the 2nd bottle was the very last of the wine.

From the first bottle: smooth, minerals, earthy mid-palate, less peppery than their Zin, bit of a drying finish. didn't care for this one on their tasting lineup. maybe it's better with food.

Later, we had a second pour from the last of a bottle and it was very good. bigger, mildly spicy, medium-full body. plum/vanilla finish which was long. The flavor improvement must be from the extra oxygen it absorbed. Just goes to show how critical it is to let the wines open up.

Smooth, bright and palate-coating, with a mix of sweet dark jammy fruit, spice with hints of tobacco. This wine is rich and layered, with a long lingering finish with velvety tannins and floral notes. This wine is still going strong--glad I have one bottle left!
