2002 Domaine Georges Mugneret/Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée

6/20/2016 - dansamsoe Likes this wine: NR

Very good village wine. Dark red fruit, less sweet than most 2002s, but still a tad of sweetness with spices. Balanced, good volume and tannins that are smoothing out. Looks like this can hold for longer but not sure it will improve from here.

Over-Under Spring 2016: A bit flabby and disappointing for Mugneret-Gibourg, one of my favorite domaines. Perhaps their ripe house style didn’t match well with the ripe vintage. Black currant, spice & stone.

Very attractive nose, floral and vibrant. Losing some of the baby fat vs last year, not as fruity. Still mainly primary. Hint of oaks coming through and some bitterness at finish. Better on the nose than on the palate, probably going through awkward adolescent stage but not shut down. Good acidity for the vintage and no hint of alcohol, fairly good balance overall. Time to wait. Shows better on the 3rd day, oaks are gone but some lingering bitterness. Not a lot of complexity but good balance. 91 pts.

Slow-ox 1 hr, tasted over 3 hrs
-nearly opaque dark almost murky red with minimal clearing at edge
-fragrant dark cherry/berry
-med acidity gives a nice tangy note near the finish, med weight and concentration, pretty but subtle dark fruits with some spice and earth, substantial depth if not overly fine or complex, med tannins frame the finish
-exceptional balance of the vintage shines through, more expressive than some other '05s, early in a good drinking window now with perhaps a couple more years of upside, solid quality for the appellation, has soul

Easy drinking rockstar juice. Certainly not Vosne, just a nice perfumed red berry rose petal nose with crushed red berry and rocks on the palate. Last bottle. $26 in 2011. My times have changed.

Like the sisters' Clos Vougeot, the 2004 Chaignots is also showing beautifully, and now seems to be the time to drink it. A sappy bouquet of red plums, earthy, spicy soil tones and a top note of blood orange peel is followed by a juicy, expansive wine with fully melted tannins and nice balancing acidity. Very expressive and appealing.

5/30/2016 - William Kelley Likes this wine: 93 points

The 2004 Mugneret-Gibourg is à point and showing beautifully in this challenging vintage, with none of the year's telltale herbaceousness now in evidence. An expressive bouquet of black cherry, red plum, rich soil, gamebirds and dark spice is followed by a sappy, three-dimensional and expansive wine. This will never be the largest-scaled or long-lived Clos Vougeot from the sisters, but it is very long indeed on charm and complexity.

Rich ruby with a hint of brown at the rim and medium optical density. Wonderful intensity nose, with bright cherry, earth, and lifted florals, along with some savory smoked bacon notes woven in. Refreshing acidity, medium body, very dry, and with well integrated tannins, it shows an elegant, but rich mouthfeel that is smooth, yet clean. Flavours on the attack are bright red fruits (cherry, raspberry) and earthy mushroom, with a firm midpalate that adds clean pipe tobacco and florals to the still vivid fruit. The finish is long, with savory, smoky character above baking spices and earth-laden fruit peels. Very well balanced, with vivid fruit, refreshing acid, just enough tannin to clean up the finish, and a variety of interesting earth, smoke, florals, and spice to provide a ton of interest. Really nice bottle, and is drinking really well!

Austere and harder than the brilliant 2002 from a few months ago, but still absolutely wonderful, and showed better than all of the other illustrious Grand Crus at the table on this night (including Dujac, Ponsot, Vogue, and Tart). Pretty and detailed fruit is permeated completely by stone and earth, and the wine is intense and pungent, also so graceful and elegant, and so well balanced that it feels almost compressed by itself, like its ready to spring. Wonderful wine.

Eighteen months since I've tried one of these and it might be going in to its shell a bit. Initially a little thin and light, it does put on a bit of weight in the glass, especially after a decant to shake it up a bit, but it's lost the glossy sheen of earlier bottles. A glass or two left in the fridge overnight seems rather surly and tannic the next evening. Time to slumber a while methinks. ***

HDH auction tasting at Tru; 5/13/2016-5/14/2016 (Chicago, IL): This is much less cranky than the 2005 Mugnier Chambolle we had yesterday. Despite the reputation of the vintage, this seems to be surprisingly accessible. There is a lovely light red-fruitedness to it, as well as amazing fresh acidity. The palate, perhaps, is a little bit tight still, although the tannins are reasonably resolved. Very enjoyable Burgundy.

Dinner at Jade Palace. Half bottle. Deep red, touch of bricking at rim. This was a good wine and I liked it. The initial nose was extremely funky and dirty. Full of barnyard, soil, dirt and with slight aeration, there was iron, blood, copper and very tart fruit. I went Beaune, but this turned out to be an NSG. With extended time in glass, the edges rounded out, and there was much more fruit, with plums, pomegranate, sour cherries, new leather and gravel. The palate was well structured, with representation of a good NSG. Surprisingly acidic (for the vintage and format), this had good balance and was enjoyable. Touch short on the finish and complexity, but that's probably nit picking. Pretty sure this should see an additional couple of points for a 750.

Clean and fresh red berry fruit that has a jube-like quality. There's a touch of aniseed and everything is back-lit by electric acidity. Beautiful poise, proportion and balance.

The nose wasn't as powerful as I remembered the last bottle being.Still plenty of red fruit highlighted by red berries. The fading nose highlighted was has been described before as a tart finish. The finish is a bit all over place and leaves one wanting more. Overall, though mostly the nose, still makes it a very enjoyable wine.

Mugneret-Gibourg Chambolle-Musigny les Feusselottes Dinner (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Served single blind in MG 2007-2010 Feusselottes flight. Also very ripe, this came across as longer vs the 2009 vintage, and slightly more austere, while just as concentrated. Very excited to revisit 2020 and later.
