My Grade: VG. This was very shut down at first and this continued until 4 days under Vacuvin, tasting each day. When it finally opened up it presented good depth with plenty of slightly jammy fruit and decent structure. If you are patient, this is worth the wait. I didn't notice any Sulphur in this bottle, unlike other tasters here (see my profile for grades).

Cork was soaked up to 1mm from the top.

N: very timid, smoke, some wet dog
P: smooth, dense...but quite austere. Certainly lacking its pedigree and showing its vintage. Not impressed in any way, but there was nothing inherently at fault either.
Drink or hold, unlikely to improve.

My second Lamarche 2012 (my first was Suchots) and I really like this producer. Lots of Vosne Spices on both the nose and the palate. Lightness, finesse and elegance, and even some complexity. Also quite open. Just slightly tart right after opening, but this blew off with some air.

2001 Vosne-Romanée Grand Cru Dinner (Imperial Treasure Teochew, Takashimaya): A nicely complete Grand Cru and a rather pleasing wine, even if it did not quite share the effortless elegance of some of its more illustrious cousins in the later flights. This had quite a tight nose to start off with, with shades of meat and wood spice and a gentle earthiness underlying subtle notes of black cherry – a very Vosne bouquet I thought, albeit a rather reticent one. The palate seemed a tad rustic on first sip, with ripe notes of plums and black cherries touched with a chew of rather obvious tannins. With a bit of time though, a nice brightness and clarity lifted the wine quite nicely, with satisfyingly full dark-fruited notes melding with more subtle nuances of herb and wood spice in a nice finish. This lack some of power and intensity you would expect of a top Vosne-Grand Cru, but it had good enough depth and a nice solid, well-balanced structure that lent it a nice sense of focus and clarity throughout. Starting to drink nicely now, this was an understated yet very complete wine. I liked it

Opened for 5 hours before consumption. On the first whiff, it seemed almost american pinot sweet. The nose has some unresolved heat and had quite a bit of new oak. The palate was huge and slightly viscous in texture. Needs time to let the oak and fruit integrate. Given this, the texture of the wine was pretty elegant and velvety. A pretty good effort for this vintage but need some years, maybe 2 -3, for it to settle down. Any rating will be for future potential so not rated for now.

From memory- no formal notes taken during dinner. Red fruit and earth aromas with a slight floral edge. Medium-bodied and fully-integrated with red and dark fruit, earth and iron. Rustic.

This wine is seriously closing down, and needed a long decant to show. Still very primary showing tart raspberries and a toasty element. On the palate it's concentrated and has firm tannins and high, mouthwatering, slightly tart acidity. Well made and great potential. 90 for now.

Vosne Night (Tonny Restaurant, Geylang Lor 3, Singapore): Decently good, but clearly a few notches below the La Grand Rue from the same vintage. I thought this had quite engaging nose, not quite green, but showing a touch of dried, powdered Chinese herbs mingling amidst sweeter notes of dried red cherries and strawberries and a little lift of perfume, with a suggestion of dried flowers and sweet spice at the sides. Very attractive - I would never have guessed that this was a 2004 even with that little hint of herb. The palate was bright and juicy, very light on its feet in spite of having a good amount of substance on the attack, with delicious flavours of red berries leading into a nice finish, where a little bite of fresh acidity and fine tannins paved the way for a trailing tail of toasty spices. I thought this was perhaps a touch on the light side for Grand Cru as it went past the midpalate, but there was certainly still enough here for it to be very engaging. Nice, if just lacking a bit of oomph. Not sure it will be the longest lasting wine, but it should drink well over the next decade or so.

Very pretty delicate but expressive perfume of blue/raspberry, flowers, and spice. Palate splashing dark berry fruit. Good complexity. Cranberry/ higher acid berry fruit on midpalate. Young but very good.

Visit to Domaine Francois Lamarche-Vintage 2013 (Vosne Romanee): Deep red. Very high toned perfume. Sweeter sense than any of the other wines. Great roundness and mouth feel without any excess ripeness or weight. Prominent bolstering cranberry acidity. This is exceptionally finely rendered. A bit funny to taste after the Clos Vougeot since it is supremely elegant and feminine. The most satisfying wine in this excellent range.

Visit to Domaine Francois Lamarche-Vintage 2013 (Vosne Romanee): Red. This too is very fragrant. Not a big wine at all. Tightly coiled clean crystallized fruit which seems slightly sweeter than in either of the Vosnes. Powerful acidity, very long. This is incredibly fine and refined. Terrific potential to turn into something subtle and beautiful.

Jays big Bottle Party, from a double magnum. First flight. Opened several hours before the tasting

Nose was a little reticent, got some floral and red fruit. Palate was red fruits, cherry, earth/pine. Medium finish.

I think this would have been more ready/expressive from a 750 or much longer decant.

Absolutely pristine bottle. In the glass, projects that exquisite translucent ruby color found only in center-cut Vosne-Romanee. Lacks the spice and depth of R-C, La Tache, La Romanee, but with equal purity, so it could only be La Grande Rue of a great year. No sign of fading; will hold easily for 10 years and could even <gasp> improve.

Clos de Vougeot 2002 and Pichon 1995, a wonderfully, suitable pair of wines to complement roast chicken.

Vougeot went through a couple of phases during the course of supper, and over a few hours: firstly, high tone, candied fruits and quite tight then mellowing out and expressing black cherries, earth and sous-bois with a touch of gaminess. An intriguing and youthful wine.

The Pichon was for me the highlight of the evening. Deep robe with a narrow rim, exuding youthfulness and expression. Gravelly, wet stone and mineral notes. On the palate, mocha, gravel and pepper and a balance of fine tannins and acidity; the only disappointment was that it was lacking a little on the mid-palate, but ends with a long mineral finish. A lovely wine.
