John and I had had a big day of wine tasting so restricted ourselves to one bottle at dinner at Ma Cuisine in Beaune ... Pierre explained that Jaboulet-Vercherre were a negociant in Beaune in those days and that the site here is now owned by Faiveley. The colour was a good red brown for the age. The l'Ecu had a lovely bouquet of old leather, dry brushwood and clay, with a strong tartufo nero note. With time, a cherry liqueur nuance emerged, which John attributed to a hot ferment. On the palate, the wine was very much alive with plenty of relatively bright, red fruit character. The flavour spectrum was secondary, not tertiary. It was a lovely old bottle with plentiful preserved red berries, cigar, dry underbrush and dusty earth flavours, but nothing like mushroomy or vegetal flavours. John detected a pruney character but, as someone who prefers more primary fruit flavours than me, was pleasantly surprised by the fruit (still) evident here. In fact he speculated that it might be possible that some Rhone varieties had added into the wine (given the Beaune train station being on the train line to Lyon)! I was very satisfied with this mellow old bottle, putting it a little behind the 1964 Chanson from a couple of nights before ... However, this bottle could have easily gone another 5-10 years in the cellar ...

Pristine bottle, perfect cork and level. A lovely specimen of mature Beaune Premier Cru. Gentle and mature profile, harmonious and complete, warm and fresh, rosehip and forest floor, hint of cheese rind, mineral core, sweet fruit without even a hint of decay, seamless, resolved tannins; complete finish, lovely length, not drying at all. Very good for what it is and really outshines the previous two bottles.

Extracted with a Coravin. Deep golden amber color, with a clear meniscus. Alluring bouquet of caramel, butterscotch, nuts, and ripe fruit. Surpisingly this threw some sediment and was stemmy upon first pour but it blew off and turned fruity, exhibiting flavors that matched the bouquet, a soft texture, and a warm finish. This is well made and has a ways to go. Look forward to opening rest of bottle.

Charleston III - the Weekend; 9/18/2014-9/20/2014 (Charleston SC - various locations incl. Red Drum, Halls, Circa 1886, and Kings Courtyard Inn): This tastes like a very old glass of Pinot Noir (to be expected as that's what it is). Whereas some of the earlier wines we had still felt young, this is heading towards the end of its drinking life. The stewed fruit flavor that I get is particularly pronounced and heading a bit towards the sour side. I like it though.

Had this at Bern's in Tampa. Needed 30 mins in the decanter to warm and another 15 mins in the glass for the fruit to come out and the tannins to soften. Somewhat lean blackberry and currant fruit with some smoky notes with medium acidity and finish. Came around nicely and showed some good complexity. Always fun to drink old wines at reasonable prices there.

Identical to my previous note. I would like to add that the flavour profile of this bottle reminds me a lot of a 2003 Liefmans Kriek tasted last year - but nowhere near as vibrant and without the bubbles of course. Which also goes to say that any Morey typicity in this, not unpleasant, drink has long been lost.

Very similar to my previous note, but the texture is a tad more silky and there is just that little bit more charming fruit - and as such the wine warrants an extra point. Very impressive quality at 21 years of age, lively and not drying out, testimony to the energetic quality of its mountainous terroir (above Bressandes) and to the excellent 1993 vintage.

Noch erstaunlich jungendliches Granat mit nur leicht bräunlichen reflexen.
An der Nase Sauerkirsch und Himbeere. Zimtstange, tabak und nasses Holz.
Am Gaumen sauerkirsch, holunderbeere,limette , fudge, salz, kakaofruchtfleisch.
Recht säurebetont aber dabei nicht unangenehm.

Had prepared this as a back-up in case the 72 Mouton would turn out undrinkable, and then decided to open this a few days later. PnP - cork came out in one piece. In the glass, this is bricking at the rim but doe not look tired. A smell of strawberries and earth out of the opened bottle and also on the palate. Acidity in great balance provides freshness. Fine tannins. Medium finish. Without any nostalgia, this is an excellent wine, and head and shoulders above the 72 Mouton a few days ago. This wine will see it's 50th birthday no problem - glad I have 5 bottles left.

Has an almost medicinal cherry note to the nose, it is quite pleasant mind you. There are also aromas of fresh flowers and it is a little stalky and sappy. It is full and sweet in the mouth. It comes across as a little simple but is quite delicious and finishes with the slightly astringent tannins that so often show up in 94's.

Absolutely superb and a great surprise. Melange of strawberry and gentle cassis. Definitely at peak or just beyond but a real joy. Had with Coq au Vin.

Attractive, pale, mature garnet; hinting at overripeness but still sound, rounded and pleasant, with 'sève', hint of tannin, nice weight, slightly edgy acidity, good fruit. Completely intact on the second day, seems to improve even. Very remarkable for what it is.

Tasted Blind two Red Burgundy with Mike, first place, Dark red color in the glass, deeper, and fresher than its peer tonight, tasted baked cherry tart, minerals, earth, with a touch of oolong tea, more of the same on the palate, delicious tasting, medium body, long finish, shows the greatness of the 1969 vintage.

I've had this bottle in the cellar since release and bought for $5.95. What a surprise! Very drinkable...in fact, it was quite good. Lacks the complexity of a great wine, but very tasty. Loads of secondary aromas. A bit of brett. Still has great fruit. Lush and long finish. Loved it!

Bordeaux matters, along with Burgundy and Champagne and Port and ... (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.): OK, I do agree with some of our fellow diners this evening that the nose was, well, odd. I got distinct wet sock. Some cheesy aspects. But you know, these aromatics grew less pronounced over time. And the palate was subtle and nuanced, with a sneaky richness. It was not evidently so, but grew on the palate through to the moderately long finish. Very enjoyable, but outgunned by the 1999 Echezeaux with which it was paired. In any case, how often does one crack open a grand cru from 1969 these days? Wow!

Belated holiday dinner - Mostly Burg and Bordeaux (Ripple Restaurant in DC): I am a firm believer of pop and pour for old Burgundies to preserve the nose. This was double decanted. Very muted nose, sweet dark dry fruits and tree bark but not much else. Excellent concentration and sweet fruit palate impression. Excellent palate and below average nose.

Served with herb/chard/mushroom stuffed boneless lamb. Mid depth red/umber color in glass. Lovely rich nose -- floral, red fruit, hints of cedar. Nose echoed directly on palate but with light earth, barest bit of vanilla, and more dried fruit. Not a dense wine. Acid and tannin layered on subtly in the finish.

Étonnamment en forme encore pour un vin de 18 ans. La couleur commence à peine à montrer un pourtour grenat briqué. Légèrement trouble.
Le nez est sur le cuir fin, les épices douces avec une touche de champignons.
La bouche, sans être très puissante, est encore bien vivante. Les tanins sont fondus, mais il subsiste une petite amertume en finale.
Peu de notes tertiaires et une acidité encore présente rend le tout bien agréable bien qu'un peu léger. En fait pas mal meilleur que ce que j'attendais. Une belle surprise!

Lovely rich aromatic wine. Full bodied and smooth with red/drark fruit flavors. Earth and mineral tones and some floral notes in nose. Long palate that evolved nicely.

Amazingly younger than its age by at least two decades. This has aged Burgundian red stewed fruits and tea leaves with ethereally sweet strawberry juice. Well aged and effortless
