2001 Domaine Leroy Corton-Renardes

Corton Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

Typical leroy nose with sweet red fruit, flowers, and stems. The finesse indicated that its a grand cru. The palate was sweet with elegance and firm structure. Good for now and another 8-10 years.

Not so good like 2002, but this Pommard shows like a Grand Cru burgundy.

Subtle nose of dark fruit and spice. Big up front flavors on the palate, but this shortens up right after the fancy attack. Amazing for a village wine but you are sure paying for it.

A bit reserved on the nose by Leroy standards but still lovely red, black and blue fruit along with some spice and touch of earth. The palate is full and rich but holding back a bit. Great interplay between brooding dark fruit and wispy red fruit and floral notes. More intense spice. Medium lingering finish. Will last a long time.

Bottle 502 of 572. Classic dark and extracted Leroy nose, though there isn't as much dirt as I'd like there to be, or as much as I'd expect from a Nuits. This is more focussed on ripe dark fruit with a slightly herbal and high-toned edge. The palate is quite round and fat, and showing a lot of the same ripe fruit character. Decent acidity keeps this from becoming too much of a blob. The tannins are still there, but there's just enough to add a little bit of chew to the finish, which also helps with the ripe fruit. This finishes with a slight bit of rust that I find surprising given the commune, but whatevs, this is a great bottle. Went great with coq au vin.

Two bottles from two different cases opened this weekend. Both were completely shut down on the nose. Barely any hint of fruit or spice. The palate was almost as closed with just glimpses of dark fruit, red fruit and touch of spices. Extremely dense, well balanced, concentrated and structured. Totally different experience than my last experience with this wine. I assume this is just a dumb phase.

After a few mediocre bottles of Leroy recently I wanted to make myself feel better with a sure thing. This did not disappoint. As wonderful as it was 2 years ago this bottle seemed ever so slightly mellower and emphasized more black fruit with a interesting coffee/ chocolate note. Outstanding spice throughout that was not over powering or too stylistic. Super balance and length. 2002 Leroys are really something. Happy this ended up being tasting note 3000!

Completely closed on the nose. Barely a bit of dark fruit and spice. Smooth, well integrated with nice balance on the palate with dark fruit and beefy notes. Shorter finish and just a tad dry. I was expecting this to be much better.

Burg Dinner with Friends (Puligny-Montrachet): Still just a baby with lots of fresh red fruit, fresh herbs and sweet spice. This is a large-scaled wine that is easy to enjoy, but I think has barely scratched the surface for its potential. Served alongside Jean Gros 1988 Richebourg, which was a fascinating contrast.

HDH auction tasting at Tru (Chicago, IL): Well, this has the textbook Leroy nose. Earthy and powerful, but at the same time, there's plenty of bright red fruit playing some counterpoint to it. If anything, the oak does show a bit prominently on the palate, but that seems to be a function of the lighter vintage. There's a sweet bright red cherry note on the palate, with some heavier tannins that seem slightly out of place. Still, it's hard not to like this wine.

Beginningto show touch of age, garnet colour on edge. Lots of ripe red fruit, sauvage/sous bois, finish creamy with lovely acidity. at a perfect stage of maturity now and ageing very well, the power, complexity and longevity of a top grand cru (and price alas!). delicious.
