2008 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux

This is the final bottle that I bought way back in 2010, and this one, along with the VV Butteaux, are iconic because they introduced me to Chablis and got me to open my mind to things other than CA. I last drank one of these in Sept 2011 so it has been a while. This has been open about 2 hours, has a light chill on it. When first opened, perhaps from being a bit cold, it showed fresh cut pineapple and slate. Now, the pear and green apple have come forward, the pineapple less evident, and some sea air aromatic and salinity in the finish. In total, this is a bit richer toned and less chiseled but the flavors are spot on and very Chablis-like. No fade in this at all, very nice. PS--there is sufficient acidity here, and I would edit by remark about lack of chisel. There is still good energy here.

Beautiful showing. In need of some air but as nose it's initially a little shut down. It reveals minerality, white fruit and subtle baked aromas on nose. On palate it's already more expressive... superb minerality, saline flavors and a remarkable body despite it's youth. With every glass it kept gaining weight and complexity. This is a great Forets already and can only get better. 90-92

Popped and poured, and proceeded to drink over the next 3 hours. Lightly golden in color. Not too oaky. Sweetness on the finish. Well balanced and not too young. Good value for the money.

On the nose, aromas of slate, straw, pear, and tropical notes. Slate/chalk, slate, lemon peel, apple, and honey (taste, not sweetness) on the palate. Fruit is slightly overripe, distracting the mouth somewhat from the lovely chalk & slate profile. Medium body, nice acidity.

This wine was deliciously fat young, went through a lean, miserly period, and is now very fine, combining delicacy of mineral picquancy with firm acid structure and sumptuous fruit, and continuing to develop well for a couple of days after opening. Open one now, if you have a few. What a good source!

Nese: mer åpen en andre 2012 fra Louis Michel, sjø, mineraler, eple
Munn: sitrus med god mineralitet, fyldig med noen flotte smørtoner, god syrestruktur og pen lengde.

Lovely steely and minerally Chablis. The nose has iodine, crushed oyster shell, sea breeze, lemon zest, and tart green apple. The palate is taut, linear, and driven by crisp minerality and acids. The citrus and apple fruit is there with a nice saline touch. A lovely Chablis that is quite young, but good with food.

Medium yellow. Begins with orange oil scents, and then gradually, all of the Chablis iodine and seashell comes out. The texture is amazing for an unoaked wine, just caressing for its middle weight. Virtually perfect sugar/acid/fruit balance, and a long, mineral finish as the nose suggests. This was an absolutely wonderful Premier Cru in full bloom. Drink with great pleasure now and over the next 3 or 4 years.

Pas de notes détaillées.
Superbe nez parfumé, minéral, fruité, frais.
Bouche d'un très bel équilibre général, belle acidité, belle matière, un peu plus d'allonge aurait fait sourire...
Susceptible de se bonifier dans le temps.
89-90+

Very pale yellow. Nose: apricot, lemon poundcake. Lots of limestone. Vanilla. Sea brine. Palate: medium-plus bodied, really full for a stainless white. High acidity, nice viscosity and balanced alcohol. Lemon grass, starfruit. Very tight and tense, a bit nervous, like a great stainless Chablis should be. A nice spice too it as well. Finish: the spice really dominates along with the lemon grass. Overall this is a great entry level Chablis, I love its nervousness.

Thought this btl showed more lift than the Dauvissat likely reflecting the 2010 vintage vs 2006. Good minerlality and salinity but also, oddly, signs of oak aging and wood spice. I've always thought this producer doesn't use oak and, if so only neutral oak but, it did show flavors of wood spice for some reason? Maybe from the malo it got. Fun comparison with the Dauvissat. Didn't like it better, didn't like it less. As I said before neither wine wowed me.

Nice chablis. Not as full as some Fevre that I have from same vineyard and year. Okay, not great. I wish I had fewer bottles left!

Nicely rounded, it kept evolving in my glass for an hour to get to a stage where everything is in place. Medium weight with medium intensity, just good as it is.

Wine was decanted and drunk over a two day period.

Color: Light lemon and clear. Looks young which of course it is.

Nose: Nice mineral and stones come through.

Taste on Day 2: Good balance but the flavors and cut is not as precise as I would have expected. I can taste the minerality on the finish and it is moderately complex. The 2007 and 2008 has ever more of a lazer like finish as I recall and in this regard the 2012 is a little flabby in the middle
relative to other more classic vintages. Very chablis in overall character and a nice wine but this is not exceptional but a good drinker today. Would I buy more to put in my cellar, probally not but for $30-35 it is fairly priced and a nice white wine with fish or on a summer day. Score 90+

Det er en "thin fine line" mellom steinstøv og ull, og denne faller akkurat ned på rettsiden for meg. Gul frukt. I munnen er dette helt fantastisk. Utrolig ren og rik frukt, masse punch, flott stramhet under frukten, steinete og lang finish. Nesten smertefull intensitet.

Mineral nose with fresh apple - classic Chablis; refreshing palate, a little textural with similar flavours. Acidity not too high and I would say this is very much ready to drink - you could age it but why wait?
