Quite a bit more developed than previous bottles, fully mature. Nice mix of earth, fruit, sous bois and game.

Highly aromatic, this medium ruby-colored wine flaunts a nose of red currants, raspberries, cocoa powder, allspice and dry earth. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, freshly acidic, seamlessly alcoholic and has medium-weight, sweet tannins. The flavors mirror the nose and build on the middle palate. Closing with impressive length, this is a quality premier cru Burgundy which should drink well for at least another 5-6 years. Drink now-2021.

Surprisingly herbaceous and kind a thin for a 2009 Bourgogne. Influence by old oak barrels was obvious - very crude tannin.

Very tight. Finally started to budge on the third night open, this is very well made, fully and deliciously fruited, has a great structure of balanced acids and tannins, and wonderful Gevrey-specific earthy minerality. An iron fist in an iron glove at present. This is a Gevrey that looks to be ready to explode once it uncoils, but it really does need a good decade. Old school to the max. 91pts now with at least a couple to the upside, quite likely.

Texturally, this is smooth and approachable, although it is showing not much apart from dark cherry/berry fruit and just a touch of smoke. The fruit is full, but not excessively big, and the tannins are hidden, though the slight dryness to the tannin is perceptible. The palate is wide and dark; one senses the depth, but the depth will be revealed in time, along with more complexities. Tasty, primary, much too young. This should unfold nicely with time. Tacos with Sarah and Jonathan. Bye, Armory.

From memory. Roses, smoke, berries on the nose. Penetrating fruit on the palate with clear acid frame. Elegant and vibrant. 50 + 16 + 16 + 9.

A lot darker, fuller and deeper than I expected. Meaty, gamey and quite savory. Maybe a little brett and slightly cooked. Tannins are almost resolved and acid is in check. Far from perfect. Stinky yet tasty, like a good Époisses.

What a difference a day makes. Or two. On the first night it was rather closed and restrained. None of the richer vintage characteristics that we expected. By the second night, gassed and refrigerated in between, it started to open. By the third night, it was very nice. Violets, a touch of white pepper, a bare touch of Burgundy forest floor. And well balanced, as expected. Now we are not sorry to have one more, and will wait a few years before opening it.

Nice. Fresh, open, ready. Silky tannin with a nice iron-tinged Nuitsy bite at the finish. Black cherry fruit with maybe a touch of something redder underneath, a hint (but only a hint) of hoisin, mint, nice and savory on the palate. Sort of textbook nuits/pruliers.

Medium/deep garnet core, wide pale garnet rim. Nose shows sweet, rich, strawberry fruit, vanilla, touch of undergrowth and earth. Medium/full bodied, quite gamey, sweet fruit, generous/layered, tannins a touch chewy though softening as it warms, good length finish. Excellent - don't serve too cool.

Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Bin 75): Dull see through brick with orange red rim; boiled peanut shells, herbaceous, leather, some cherry, rotting flowers, orange peel; silky texture, some grip, very acidic, spice on finish, tons of character; interesting; good not great.

Lovely nose, rose petal, damp earth, hints of sauvage, red berry fruits, anise, and tea leaves. The palate is very elegant, beautifully balanced, with lovely red fruits, spice, and minerality. The tannins are well integrated and the acidity is fresh and beguiling. This is very good, a very feminine, elegant style of Gevrey, but quite tasty. Will improve for 2-4 years, but definitely seems meant for midterm drinking rather than long term.

Dark ruby. Smoke, dark berry fruit on the strict nose, which blossoms into heady floral loamy notes after 30 minutes. Fruit runs pure and deep on the palate, wired with acid, melting into nicely tapering finish. Handsome, austere, beguiling. 50 + 18 + 18 + 9.

Expected this Pommard to be rather closed off considering its youth but it turned out to be surprisingly accessible. There is a significant amount of depth here with a good amount of forest floor alongside pleasant of fresh red fruits, likely due to its youth. A very well-made, enjoyable Pommard that certainly has the makings for something even better with time.

Sounds like the wine may have been closed down for the previous note. I found this wine to be somewhat tightly wound at this point in time, but offered decent complexity and interest and did open up a bit over the course of a few hours. Some crunchy red fruits along side deeper tones and overall very enjoyable.

If I were a character in Game of Thrones, I would certainly be Jon Snow, because when it comes to wine tasting, over and over again I prove to myself that I know nothing.

You can probably find the first note I wrote on this wine five or so years ago when I expressed my outrage at Acker Auctions for calling it L. Boillot in a listing, thus casting doubt over whether it was Lucien or Louis Boillot. I think they did it deliberately so they could trap a sucker (wait a minute, am I talking about me?).

I won't regurgitate any more of that sad history now because I want to deal with the wine at hand. Still a darkish red, decidedly more secondary than other recent '05's I've opened. Prominent leather and underbrush eclipses fruit in the nose. It seemed ungainly and harsh on day 1, with prominent notes of alcohol and shoe polish, and I was muttering to myself and dredging up evil memories of the original purchase.

I let it go for another day and found it to be somewhat better the next time. More resolved, but still lacking the radiant vibrancy I expect of this vintage. It seems a bit tired, but on the other hand, I've had mono for the past two months, so is that not the pot calling the kettle black?

The bottle has a Kermit Lynch label on it, and he knows a lot more about wine than I do, so I'm going to make the assumption that I'm in the wrong here and this really is a good Volnay 1er Cru from a good producer in the best vintage of my lifetime. However, if it somehow improves in the bottle from here, I'll take the Wall.

I have five more if anyone wants to swap.

A big wine…with just a hint of barnyard in the nose. Plenty of smoke and red fruit with large dollops of acidity and tannins…a bit more tannic than I recalled from last time. Very tasty currently, although needs at least an hour open before drinking.

Opened about 1 hour prior to serving. At first, it seemed like a wall of tannins and oak barred the way into anything else. After a few hours though, it turned delicious. Black raspberry, truffle, and forest floor came first. With more air, blueberry and pomegranate emerged. The oak never really went away but it did recede a lot, giving this wine surprising balance. A very, very pleasant experience after I'd waited a few hours.
