Another beautiful bottle. PnP, the profile was all about crunchy rasberry, cherry and earth, ethereal but intense. Years left based on this showing but lovely now ****+

Light garnet color. Nose offers up ripe strawberries, spice, barnyard just what would expect from a mature sexy village VR in the feminine style. Fruit is waning and palate dominated by drying tannins, but still has lovely mineral acidity. I think it is on the way down but so what for a village after 13 years, drink up.

Tasted blind. Red ruby color with hints of aging in the edges. Nose is delightful and full of oranges, bonfire, forest floor with moss and mushrooms, and some tomato juice. Heavenly nose. Palate is powerful and elegant, full and velvety. Perhaps a bit closet still? There is something unfulfilled in here. The palate consists of lots of ripe fruit, prunes, strawberries, and a nie sweetness in there. A bit drying from tannins at the end of the palate starts out a super long finish. Completely staggering, and I love Engel and count myself lucky every time I am priviliged enough to taste one.

Initially, I found this quite tight and closed, and showing nothing but some thin acids. With a bit of air (and duck confit), this opened up significantly, to show a little bit of mushroom and earth in addition to the bright red fruits and acid. Definitely a bit lighter on the earth tones than I'd expect for a 20+ year old Clos Vougeot. This wine showed a very light hand in the winemaking process, which I appreciated, though I'm not sure that based on this bottle alone I could say that the wines merit the cult status they have today (which in my mind is simply because the domaine is extinct).

Medium depth of colour with a brown tinge; a very opulent, perfumed nose with red fruits and sous bois; quite full and rich on the palate, but the acidity still dominates. This tastes quite mature, but the acidity may keep it fresh for a while yet.

Dense color with some edge lightening. Nose quite intense with some initial VA giving way to black cry and plum with pungent earth and spice characters. Palate dense and a little 'lumpy' reflecting the year with excellent length and grip. Tannins are somewhat rustic and tighten the finish somewhat. A very good albeit slightly rustic drink. Plenty of character though.

Real perfume on the nose with maraschino cherries, cloves, and some barnyard earth aspect which really brought the wine together. It had bricking around the edges with a nice ruby hue in the glass, but the tertiary notes gave this wine a sense of age with it showing the '97 vintage with some heat on the palate. The finish and mouthful were elegant, but this is ready to drink but could age a few more years. Drink up.

John's Birthday Degustation Dinner (Hippopotamus Restaurant, Museum Hotel, Wellington, New Zealand): Light ruby. Spectacular and etherial, lifted nose flys out of the glass, pushed by some VA. Glorious wild strawberry fruit. The palate is light on its feel and shows great vibrancy. Drinking beautifully today, this will continue to grow in stature and will always be a very light wine that convinces on its transparency. 95+

The wine opened with some sous bois and mushroom aromas. This soon blew off and sweet cherries and bright red fruits begin to emerge. the palate was extremely elegant with a svelte and velvety texture. The finish lasted pretty long. Totally ready for consumption.

Rustic at first but slowly reveals the sweetness and fruits. Need to let sweetness and elegant air out. This is beautiful. My 2nd engel but I am impressed.

I'm sorry I drank most of my bottles years ago. This wine was closed and hard for the longest time, but it is finally losing most of the dry tannins, which allows the Engel perfume and elegant fruit to come out.

Still red fruits in the bouquet. Same on the palate. Some earthy flavors, mild acidity and soft tannin. Very juicy wine and fully mature now.

Some recent 2002 Burgs: Bright, vivid red colour. Decanted 3-4 hours earlier. An attractive, spicy red-fruited nose. On palate, very pure and fairly primary with flavours of bright red berries and some subdued forest floor. There's tons of drive and power here and Grand Cru fruit weight with sleek, fine-grained tannins. Intense, rich and ripe. Returning to the bottle more than 24 hours later, the bouquet was moving towards the secondary with savoury, autumnal and underbrush nuances. The palate had similarly moved more mellow, older red plums, rather than raspberries, drinking beautifully, giving a glimpse of where it will be in 5-10 years.

The 2002 Engel Grands-Echezeaux is another bomb from the late, great Philippe Engel, bursting from the glass with lovely pure aromatics of wild berries, hedgerow fruit and subtle soil tones. The nose is not unlike Engel's 2002 Clos Vougeot, but on the palate the wine is even more intense, focused and firm at the core, with bright acids, crunchy fruit and beautifully ripe tannins, and it is here that the terroir differentiation is most apparent at this early stage. A terrific success. This is a long way from peak maturity, but the stunning quality is already apparent: what a legacy!

The 1996 Engel wines all have noticeable volatile acidity, and the domaine seems to have had an especially bad batch of corks in this vintage, so caveat emptor, but the wine opens up in the glass to reveal a nice nose of plums, spice, blood orange and leather, without every quite losing the rusty pipe bloodiness it showed on opening. On the palate the wine has considerable authority and volume, with nice bright acids, but it's ultimately disjointed. I found it really hard to get a read on this wine, and despite the vintage's good reputation I would go for almost any other if given the choice.

The 1993 Engel Clos Vougeot is an extraordinary bottle of red Burgundy, with a stunning and pure bouquet of black cherry, wild plums, woodsmoke, violets and lovely soil tones. On the palate the wine is has a lovely core of tannin and acidity and is still five or six years away from the real prime time, with amazingly three-dimensional breadth and depth, and fine old vine intensity. Simply magical.

The 1999 Engel Clos Vougeot is a real stunner, with spectacular aromatics of ripe plum, black cherry, dark chocolate, truffle, woodsmoke and soil. On the palate this wine is very deep, rich and three-dimensional, with incredible concentration: a great wine, which is still a good five or six years away from its true peak, though the quality is already obvious.

The 2002 Engel Clos Vougeot is a real bomb, with a gorgeous bouquet of wild berries, even blueberries, and cool fruit tones that are the essence of Pinot Noir. The framing acids are lovely, and the crisp tannins are perfectly ripe. This is an exceptionally elegant wine, bursting with crunchy fruit and 'Pinosity'.

The 1998 Engel Clos Vougeot is marked by the difficult vintage, as there is a touch of volatile acidity on the nose and a touch of rather rustic tannin on the finish, especially as the wine sits in the glass, but it is still a very good Clos Vougeot, with an attractive bouquet of wild plums, blood orange and fennel seed, and ample volume and flavor on the palate.

The 1999 Engel Aux Brulées is really à point: a fleshy, joyous wine which bursts from the glass with aromas of red plums, Vosne spice and sous bois. There is lovely balance and breadth here, and what the wine lacks in focus and depth is amply compensated for by its generosity of spirit.

Classy, lovely mature & complex nose, with loads of juicy chicken broth, Vosne spices, very fine herbs mixed with red wild berries and ripe cherries.
Tell-tale Vosne, from top producer, fine vintage and top vineyard.
Palate shows mature ripe & sweet lovely red fruit, deep and velvety, with very good acidity, length, freshness and composition.
Very fine and in a sweet spot right now.
I’d love to come by a couple of bottles, as I really enjoyed this fine juice.

Melvyn's 50th Birthday Bash (Hua Ting, Orchard Hotel): Second flawed bottle. Corked. The nose stank of wet cardboard and iodine alongside notes of dark cherries, spice and earth. I think this would have been quite good if not for the TCA. The palate was similarly marked by a cardboardy over-layer, but beneath that, it felt full and complete, with still rather deep flavours of dark-fruited black cherries, blackberries and lots of smoky spice underscored by bright 1996 acidity. Finish was just a bit flat, petering out with some orange peel notes and a little trail of minerality. That may have just been the effect of the flaw though. Pity.
