 | 2005 Domaine Tempier Bandol (France, Provence, Bandol) | 1/30/2010 | Paul D | 86 |
Medium ruby core, medium pale ruby rim. Ripe bilberry and blackberry fruit on the nose, moderate intensity with notes of meat, pepper and earth. Medium full bodied, but relatively fresh and light with keen acidity, with moderate to good depth of fruit not quite covering some firm, slightly furry tannins. Some attractive savoury bilberry and red berry fruit, notes of earth, medium - good length slightly firm, dry finish. Good with lamb chops. Not sure this has the depth of fruit to be a real long-term keeper? 13.5%ABV (266 views) $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $ |
 | 1993 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Spéciale (France, Provence, Bandol) | 1/28/2010 | johncapitola | |
Needed about 45 min to blow of the musty nose and then it showed lots of fruit and [still] firm tannins. After about 2 1/2 hours in the glass it was starting to loose its body and started to become flat... Drink it soon! This wine was from a 375 bottle. 11-14% alc (as stated on bottle)...plain and simple, the wine needs some decanting...on the nose, after approx. an hour the wine explodes on the nose, loads of leather, earth, spice, garrigue, tar - reminds me of complex Rhone wines where the fruit isn't first, second or third expression, the fruit appears at the last bit of the nose...on the palate this wine is singing and in perfect balance, fine structure - for drinking now, not necessarily long aging - great fine tannins, great acidity, long, long, long finish of dried red fruits, leather, herbs, dried cherry. A fine, pleasing wine. Complex, yes. The only issue with aging longer for me is how much further will the fruit continue to dry out? Ready to go and frankly, I'll drink mine with barbecue this summer. (326 views) $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $ |

This sinewy, well-structured wine, filled with raspberry fruit, earth, spice and herbs proved to be an inspired complement to a pungent, flavor-crazy haunch of roasted wild hog, served with a big bowl of bitter, garlicy rappini and a few loaves of bread. A nice Bandol to drink young. (455 views) $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $ |

Similar to previous experiences with this wine; however, this bottle showed a more open and accessible personality from the beginning. (169 views) $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $ |

After a couple hours in the decanter it had largely shed its abrasive tannins leaving an incredible bottle of wine. Dark ruby color, wild mix of plum, dust, wet cement and underbrush on the nose followed by complex flavors of garrigue that made me want to drop it all and head for Bandol. I only got a small glass of this - light, refreshing but quite herby. Not for me. (308 views) $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $ |

Wine 202 at Red Slate (Red Slate Wine Co., Portland, OR): Open a few hours: Beef pot pie, ripe red fruits, a little bit of tobacco and grape leaves show in what is a soft, pretty nose. On the palate this has immediately grippy tannins, high acidity with a medium body but great feel on the palate. Sour, underripe red fruits show throughout. Those grippy tannins hold on for a long time into the finish leaving the mouth with a chalky feel. I would leave this one to age or eat it with a meal and with a lengthy decant. An interesting contrast when compared to a 1996 Tempier Bandol Cabassaou side-by-side. (368 views) $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $ |

Wine 202 at Red Slate (Red Slate Wine Co., Portland, OR): This wine was used in our class to show off what happens to a wine as it ages, enjoyed along side a 2006 Tempier Bandol. In decanter a few hours before tasting. I couldn't detect any fruit on the nose initially, lots of funky notes, autumn leaf pile, pipe tobacco, cinnamon spices, with later in the night some dried cherries making a barely noticeable appearance. The palate still carries a very firm structure throughout the experience. Again it was hard to find fruit here, burnt rubber, smoke, green olives, earth, and barely, just barely some cherries. Some interesting complexities show here although this wine needs far more time still, maybe another 5-10 years based on the structure. (126 views) $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $ |

Kermit Lynch Tasting (Wine Exchange - Orange, CA): Pure purple red throughout. Meaty, herbal, complex, and driven on the nose with dark fruit notes such as blackberry and licorice. Nice red fruit flavors through the finish. The structure is solid here with strong but not too firm tannins, nice acidity, and good overall balance. Quite approachable actually and should develop beautifully. (347 views) $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $ |

Another spectacular bottle. Some bottle time has smoothed out all of the edges. A rose that even "non" rose drinkers would love. (356 views) $ FIND THIS WINE on WINE-SEARCHER.COM $ |

The flavors and aromas were typical Bandol (as I understand them), but what was remarkable was the accessibility. I don't have a whole lot of experience with Bandol in general, but I often find young Bandol are often very austere and drying, before opening up after ~10+ years to become full of sweet fruit. This young wine was anything but austere, with an abundance of fruit which fought the smooth, but significant tannins. While this is very nice now, it should get significantly better with time.
