This is great! Lots of dark fruit, pepper and meat on the nose. Also some bonfire (but not really smoke, just the fire, if that makes any sense). Great balance on the palate with quite a high acidity, firm tannins and refreshing red berries, together with some more complex meaty and spicy notes. Drinking very nicely at the moment, although I suppose it might still improve a bit.

Dark, dense crystal clear crimson red. Slightly purple. Nose has a lot of fruit, a slight green tinge of the vintage, some blackberries and white pepper. Palate is fresh, young, light and succulent. Power and lots of fruit. This is not a powerbomb but has a lot of elegant balance. I think the difficult vintage has turned this wine into a pinot-like substance. Wonderful!

A dynamically changing Syrah that offered multiple facets over an evening. Open for business with a brief decant, contrary to what some reviews had me expecting. At first a floral syrah perfume but after an hour, smoked meat and pepper. This starts light and open but then the tannins clamp down. Smells lighter than it tastes; smells sweeter than the bitter tannins that close it. The rust really comes through adding to the appeal.

Mooie syrah uit de Noord Rhône. Mooi kersenfruit in de neus. Mooie minerale wijn. Nu prima op dronk.

Decanted. Medium ruby color, with thin blue/violet rim. Medium intense aroma of blackberry, blueberry, pepper and a herbal note. Full and fresh taste of dark berries. Medium intensity, with fresh acidity through the whole taste-curve. Distinct but delicate tannins. Medium long finish of tart and juicy dark berries and pepper. Good wine, with nice ageing potential. Can probably develop nicely the next 10 years.

Decanted. Medium deep ruby color, glass coating. Aromas of brambly blueberry & plum, fresh herbs-de-provence, and hints of smoke. Bright and fresh on the palate, showing primary blue fruits notes and depth of peppery herb and slight mesquite smoke that's consistent with the nose. Medium bodied. Medium+ acid and polished grainy tannins. Finishes with tart juicy dark fruit and medium length. Very nice.

Had not previously had Les Cotes before, but a disappointing wine for me, disjointed and sharp. Perhaps it was that bottle, as I really enjoy his other offerings.

It smells like blackberry, mineral, mushroom and black pepper. The body is medium/full. The wine has fleshy texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity.

Tasted like a generic CDR. Spice, light red fruit, astringency. Not typical of the core of pure blue/black fruit/brine flavors I look for in a Cornas.

Classic Northern Rhone stinkiness (not too much) on the nose is inviting. It has pleasant dryness and good acidity with high toned blackberries, game, and gentle curry spices. Really light on its feet, this should be great with food. It is old world in style.

Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Blind Tasting $60+ (Roswell, GA): Mine; deep dull purple, opaque core, lots of cloudiness- not very attractive; nose is unmistakably N. Rhone, smoked meat, plum, berry, violets, lots of purple, leather, olive and strong black pepper; an elegance to the layered palate, an old-school feel, tannins and structure were in check though not absent; I feel this is starting to drink really well; everyone thought this was Cote Rotie.

Excellent!

Surprisingly approachable and far more charming and interesting than I would have thought at this stage. There is plenty of Northern Rhone Syrah marks here, pebbly dark-toned fruit, olives, violets and broth and there's a lovely freshness about this wine. The wine has great depth and intensity of fruit and a real sense of place even though there's perhaps just a small lack of the real, wild, rugged Cornas character. Will be a great wine to follow.

In the bouquet minerals, chocolate, bacon, black olives and herbs and spices. On the palate a lot of minerals as well, firm acidity and sticky tannin. Clearly Northern Rhone Syrah and special. Very early maturity now. Will improve with some more ageing. Around 2019? 90 – 92 for now.

Score reflects potential rather than current drinking. A too-young but promising, and reasonably approachable, Cornas. Classic flavor profile with ripe tannins, clean dark black fruit (plums? cassis?), good length. Enough acidity to balance but not prominent; not particularly mineral. As my notes against the 2006 and 2008 of the same wine said, a nice balance of modern and classic. A nervous energy that takes away form the wine but is likely to subside in 3-5 years. If the 2006 is any indication this will be better then. Promising; drinkable now but definitely room to improve.

Honey Butter Fried Chicken, Champagne, and some blinds (Chicago, IL): Served blind. It tends to be a bad sign when a wine is magenta in colour. Notes of black pepper and lots of young overexcited black fruit. Trouble brewing? The palate was nowhere as bad as what the nose led me to believe. I did think that it could be syrah, but if it was northern Rhone, it definitely was a low-end cuvee. The thin palate, showing some moderate fruit, but mostly acid before turning into water made it clear it was old world. A weird mix of juicy fruit and austerity -- the balance just doesn't work here.

This syrah has an extra gear. Truly remarkable, and approachable with a 5-hour decant. I'm an amateur with Cornas, but would note that I was happy to find this bottle wasn't tart like I was anticipating -- nor was it fruity. Like the Paris Granit 30, it's elegant, but it has much more complexity than that entry-level cuvee. Utterly worth the $57, and undoubtedly going to keep evolving.

A private dinner (Restaurant Aan de Poel **, Amstelveen, NL): Purple cherry colour; interesting nose, pure and aromatic, fresh fruit, black pepper, granite, added complexity from some attractive bretty notes; the palate is young and energetic, still a bit tight but not austere, has youthful charm and floral flavours, ripe phenolics, good length. A stylish Cornas, lovely now and in the next 5-7 years.

We bought this at a restaurant last night and it was decanted and served to us. It was rather closed and intensely tannic (even with the decant). About half the bottle was left and was recorked. We opened it up today and let it get back to room temperature about 2pm before drinking at 8pm. Today we drank this side-by-side with a 2010 Ojai White Hawk Vineyard Syrah.

Today (i.e., after more that about 24 hrs open), fairly aromatic nose with cherry cola, bacon fat, raspberries. On the palate, the tannin comes on early and leaves a chalky coating in your mouth that sticks around for a while. Good acidity, but just much more unfocused than the Ojai White Hawk. I wanted to like this a lot more than I did.
