Like licking a wet stone - tangy but not to everyone's taste. I personally love this although those who dont dig the whole natural wine flavour thing should look away now. A touch more aggresive than previous vintages, but still a classic, quirky mid-weeker.

This is an extraordinary wine . Apparently its name is to reflect forgotten winemaking practice . It is a blend of 50% S/Blanc ( though that might be difficult to tell ) with 25% Muscadelle and 25% Mauzac. The Muscadelle might be thought to be dominant as on the nose ( the wine is a deep but not browning yellow) there is a lovely spicy pain d'epices note reminiscent of fine sweet wines but there is an appley twist on the palate from the Mauzac . The Sauvignon also can be noted in a grassy back note .

It has a long finish but is clearly dry . It is very much a wine for food and would suit something with a mushroom sauce . So much more interesting than so many clean , efficient and dull white wines

A touch of bottle variation here - this bottle was much more open and rounded than previous bottles. Like a baby Bordeaux with more nuance. A touch of orange peel, green tangy fruit then a dollop of tangy soil. Very good stuff for under £10.

Impressive. Packed full of tangy Gaillac character that is beefed up a bit with nice leafy Cab Sauvignon and peppery Syrah. Tangy finish with some impressive depth. I'd be inclined to leave it another year or two to let it stretch its legs. Impressive for 10 euros and more interesting than an entry level Bordeaux.

Undecided about this one at the moment. The Duras and Braucol grapes gives this the distinctive tang of this producer but the peppery notes stick out just a touch too much. Notes of orange peel, iron, pepper and lighter fruits such as strawberry, cherries - then cut through with a dash of Syrah. Very interesting wine. A steal at 7 euros. I think it needs more time. And I still prefer the even cheaper, but excellent, Cuvee des Drilles from the same producer.

More brilliant stuff from this producer - the bottle and label may look cheap, but the contents are excellent - white flowers, peaches, melon, a touch of honey and minerals. A cross between a white Bordeaux and a Southern French white. Excellent stuff for 10 euros.

Woof. Another great wine from this producer - much richer than previous years with a wet stone aspect, minerals and refreshing red fruits. Tangy and thirst quenching. Really great red wine for the summer - and a whole £5 per bottle direct from the producer. Not to everyone's taste that is for sure, but if you like the natural wine taste then this is excellent - light, crisp, easy drinking but with a palate that is driven as much by terroir and the soil as it is by the fruit.

Now this one crept up on me like a stealth ninja. There I was idly going about my own business expecting a fairly so-so regional French white and then this pops out of the bottle - like a strutting peacock or exotic bird from the Amazonian rainforest when I was expecting a scabby common-or-garden pigeon. Great waxy nose of banana, ripe tropical fruits, clarified butter, and dirt - gritty, dry soil. This has earth in there. And mango and peaches and ...minerals. This is not some sweet, gloop-fest - there is real wine making here. This is different, dazzling and wonderfully unexpected. A kind of hybrid of Musar-blanc meets St Veran meets a rich Chablis. And it costs less than a tenner. Pffft - what is not to like? Great stuff.

Oh yes. A regular of my cellar and this is the best wine they have produced in the last few years - much richer than the 08 and 09 - a rich, peppery, juicy wine that is packed with terroir. The wet-stone aspect is still there, with prominent minerals but the flavours are much softer and rounder than the 09. Lots of red fruit and a real vin-de-soif. Smooth finish with a tangy, slurpy finish. Serve slightly chilled. Excellent. A wine for quaffing now.

My final bottle of the 2009. Wonderful wine in a way that cannot be explained to the 95% of the population who would most likely hate the stuff. Red fruit, crisp, firm Chablis-like minerality with some iron on the finish. Unique stuff. Serve chilled. Great stuff. To quote Rage Against the Machine "f*** the norm, fight the war". Fruit bombs take heed!

Les Caves de Pyrene - France, The South West (White) (Guildford, United Kingdom): Domaine d'Escausses is located hafway between Albi and the medieval village of Cordes, with a mixture of marne and sedimentary limestone. This wine, a mixture fifteen-to-fifty year old vines, is a barrel fermented blend of Sauvignon, Mauzac and Muscadelle spending twelve months on the lees in new oak and has a subtle flavour of dried fruits and curry spices. However the oak is a little too prominent on the palate which almost cancels out the qualities of the grapes. The finish is long but I feel the oak is just a little too much for me. ***1/2

This is a nice bottle of wine. I know Gailliac meant to be rubbish but this is really good. Crunchy red fruit with depth and a darkness to it on the palate that points towards more sinister and lingering liquorice finish. In a blind tasting I would swear this is was a top end south african cab blend. Chocolate and pepper on the finish. Nice. For £12 a bargain.

The 2008 was one of my favourite wines last year. 2009 brings us a riper and fuller wine but it lacks the charm of the 2008 wine - the charm of the 2008 was that it was so fresh and crunchy and quaffable. The 09 seems more like a red wine whereas the 2008 was more of a slurpy-minerally-white-wine-profile dressed up in red a red wine body. Could easily be mistaken for Cab Franc from the Loire, but despite not quite reaching 08 levels of slurpability this is still quite excellent - although I would guess most people would find it thin and undrinkable. Minerals, red fruit and terroir. Yum. Serve chilled. Refreshing.

This wine is clear and bright pale lemon color with watery rinds. It also has some tartaric crystals on the bottom.
It has a clean and medium intensive nose of developed aromas of stone fruits mainly fresh apricot with oak and spice and butterscotch.
The palate is dry and has medium+ acidity and the same alcohol level. The wine is medium+ bodied with an medium intensity of fresh apricots, integrated oak, spices and smoke. The length is medium plus.

The quality is very good because of the good balance between the medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol level and use of already integrated oak with the fruit. Yet the wine feels fresh with some bodied but not oily. The fruit has also complexity but it isn't concentrated or complex enough to be an outstanding quality. Also the reasonable long length suggest it has quality attached to it.

Ready to drink but will no doubt improve for 5 years or more due to the medium plus acidity and vibrant fruit but the wine is made surprisingly mature which both the nose and the integration of oak suggest therefore to abandon the idea of extended aging capability.

Sauvignon Blanc 50% - Muscadelle 25% - Mauzac 25%

This is now sitting firmly at the top of my "quaffers" wine list. Another great bottle ooooooozing with terroir, character and freshness. A veritable break from the norm - liquorice, red fruits, minerals, drying finish - forget "gobs of fruit" and lingering 90 second finishes - this gives you a wine that is all about freshness, quality wine making and a wine that compliments your food rather than dominating it. A slightly tangy, tarte finish - crunchy, slurpy - you can feel the love for winemaking here. What you are not getting here is depth and aging potential, but rather a wine that is for drinking now with more character and individuality that most of Bordeaux and Rhone wines will ever deliver. Excellent. Sometimes you forget that some wines are just made for drinking young. Buy buy buy.

Light red appearance - vibrant cherries and minerals on the palate and the nose with a good finish that combined smoothness with tannic grip. The mineral element to this wine was excellent - it was like licking a handful of stones. Good wine full of character.
