2014 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc

Pessac-Léognan Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more

6/16/2015 - PanosKakaviatos Likes this wine: 95 points

Revisiting Graves (Vinexpo, Bordeaux): Yet again, the potential brilliance of this is proven in June. Stone fruit, ripe pear, subtle white pepper spice and herbal notes lend burgeoning complexity. A nearly full bodied aspect with acidity that gives the barrel sample verve and energy through to a long finish. Great wine in the making.

Revisiting Graves (Vinexpo, Bordeaux): Similar to my experiences with barrel samples from late March and early April. A lovely expression of ripe red and black fruit, a lively attack with a medium plus body, marked by vivacity and medium plus flavor intensity. Refined and elegant, with a long finish marked by lift. Overall a smooth feel to the texture without being glossy modern.

This sublime wine continues improving with age. The nose, with its mineralistic, fresh, crisp citrus and honeysuckle notes pairs perfectly with the full, rich, lush, sweet, ripe, crisp, fresh, lemon and pomello fruits on the palate. This is good now, but it’s going to get better and better with more age.

Even though this clearly needs more time, with coaxing, earth and dark red berries with smoky cigar box aromatics come out from hiding. Polished, medium bodied, elegant, refined, fresh and still youthful, give this another 5 or more years before you pop a bottle.

Decanted for an hour. More red fruit composure than one would expect, yet the richness, secondary splendor and longevity are quite evident. Feathery tannins and a pure focus. Dried leather, white flower, dried strawberry and clay, with cedar during the fade. Drink now - 2026.

Rich and layered; after a three hour decant, she is shining. Long and the tannins are quite silky, and really more concentrated than one would expect from the vintage. Gravel, elderberry, Hawthorne tea and vanilla bean. Surprising, yet it shouldn't be, with this being one of my favorite producers every vintage. Drink 2017 - 2036.

This is my first bottle of 2008 ever. Before that I doubted whether this vintage was as good as RP said? But now seems he is right. It shows a nice balance between fruit and acidity, it makes me remember 1995 bordeaux I tasted in 2000 to 2001: no hard corners but ripe fruit, not over ripe like 2003. Yes in general this bottle feels like a Magaux. The wine now is still young but delicious. Although tertiary aromas not appear yet, I believe it is just a matter of time.

That's a big extracted wine! But with a nice balance that will help evolve perfectly. Even though it's already complex and it develops quite nicely in the mouth, this wine is still a baby. Typical Pessac-Leognan aromas (slight animal and herbal notes). A really nice wine that should reach its peak in about 8-12 years.

From double magnum to celebrate my 50th. Decanted for 2-3 hours. It was a magnificent wine - deep purple and at a glorious stage for drinking. I feared it might be a bit young - it was ripe for drinking now but clearly has the potential for more ageing.

From magnum. Tasted next to the 2010 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc. Not much more evolved than the 2010. Expressive and complex on the nose, ripe stone fruit notes mixed with citrus fruit, lemon peel, honey and slightly smoky notes. On the palate rich and a little waxy, creamy. But there is lots of acidity and vibrancy lifting this richness and creating a wonderfully balanced mouthfeel. Impressive length. Excellent and based on this magnum with lots of life left in it. 93-95

From magnum. Early signs of evolution on the nose, more notes cedar, tobacco with lots of black fruit and spices. Good tannins with good grip, but they are very friendly and round. Quite open on the palate, rich, very fresh and also concentrated. A really well balanced wine with very good length. Drink or hold. 92-94

An outstanding effort by Olivier Bernard and the team at Domaine de Chevalier. This wine clearly has a large merlot componant and is very lush and silky. Somewhat of a smudged fruitcake componant obfuscates the kirsch liquer on the entry. Lower in acid than some of its peers, it still seems to be evolving at a somewhat glacial pace. Give it another year or so in the bottle to re-emerge with a more multidimensional profile to this tightly wound, blue fruited, midweight, tobacco tinged, smoky road tarred stunner. It is almost there, and can undoubtably add an additional point or two in the coming couple years and for the next two decades.

PS - this is for the new generation of Bordeaux drinkers who prefer the lower acidity and more ripeness. Maybe this will turn out to be a little more classical in the future, but it will give delicious drinking for those who love primary and secondary fruits from 2016 to 2023, and will be exotic for the remainder of the listed drinking window.

Plenty of fruit and so balanced. You can drink this now without decanting and its good. Give it air and time and it improves markedly.
It is better now than 2000, 2002 and 2004 and in 5 years time I suspect it will be substantially so.

Completely different experience compared to the '09 a number of months back. This had a nutty almost oxidized aspect which really threw me off. It drank better on day 2 which leads me to believe (hoping) the wine is working itself out. Forget for 3 years.

Revisited after four years. Good colour intensity, a lively and fresh-faced 12 year old; complex and harmonious nose, deep and mineral, ripe and creamy citrus, hint of tropical fruit, herbal freshness, subtle spicy vanilla from the well-integrated oak; creamy and rounded palate, juicy, good intensity, does not lack freshness in spite of the hot vintage, noticeable bitters; only 13% ABV but slightly hot on the finish, very good length with just a hint of straw at the very end. Nice and mature by now but not as exciting as in 2011. Has settled down and will last another 5 - 10 years.

Deep garnet. Double decanted three hours before tasting. When opened, surprisingly full and vigorous, so risked the double decant ahead of transportation to dinner. Opened up to a very Grave-like tobacco and cedar nose with a good dose of menthol. Vibrant and harmonious. A little tighter-knit than the 64 Canon, and a little less generous on the attack. Bit a little kore to. The kid-palate and finish. Elegant. ****

Guessed South African... Light rich, light sweet fruit, good richness for a 2011, medium, smooth, needs time for sure to evolve, core of decent fruit, light green tannin, decent complexity. Very young wine. Hopefully we get to cross paths again it in few years.

Medium reddish garnet in color. Forward, fragrant, attractive & complex nose of ripe red fruit aromas of cherries, strawberries and currants with earthy/dusty overtones, floral notes, some cedar & tobacco, minerals/gravel, leather, spices & dried herbs. Medium bodied with a good concentration of smooth textured, balanced, ripe red fruit flavors of cherries, dried cranberries & plums with herbs, some spices, earthy gravel/stony and minerals. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present and should continue with further developing with a few more additional years of aging.

Ca 1t luft i karaffel.

Super nose which still took 2 hours to develop, amazing longevity here! Marzipan, some candied/cooked orange peel and burnt rubber. Lovely precision on the palate with a saline element and a crystalline acidity. Very good lenght carried by the acidity. No tiredness or oxidization at all!

Bloody Coravin ran out of gas just as I was about to tap this so I decided to open it instead. Decanted about 30 minutes before consumption. Profound. Aromas of red currants and berries, biscuit, slight mushroom, some tarragon and herbs here as well. Also sweet spice and leather with very slight cedary elements. In the mouth it's quite subdued but carries preposterously long on the finish bearing red fruits, leather and biscuit...there was also a citric element - almost grapefruit, oddly enough and, again, an anise quality. The tannins are completely resolved - just the hint of some burring on the mid-palate. Over time the wine gained a little weight and considerable complexity. Complete. Balanced. Lovely.

Bright red/purple. Initially red currants on the nose. Increasingly smokey with time. Palate disarmingly soft and sweet in the context of the vintage. Very well integrated, lacking only a little complexity to be truly fine--but hardly less enjoyable. Nothing under-ripe. Classical with time in hand.
