Medium-deep, reddish crimson in color. Forward, fragrant, attractive & complex nose of well developed ripe red fruit aromas of cherries, strawberries and currants with earthy/dusty overtones, floral notes, some cedar & tobacco, minerals/gravel, leather, spices and dried herbs. Medium bodied of well developed & integrated, smooth, balanced, ripe red fruit flavors of cherries, dried cranberries & plums with herbs, some spices, earthy gravel/stony and minerals. Long lingering smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present and do not see any further significant development from additional aging.

Bordeaux Confidential SF (SF): I got some distorted impressions at first (moderate instead of elevated alcohol, diminished instead of elevated acidity, no oak influence) but when I let it warm up a bit, I was able to perceive it more clearly.

Clear, bright. Medium-straw with moderate concentration. Shows some viscosity/tears/legs.
The nose is moderate intensity, and has a creamy and bitter character. There’s faint grassy pyrazines (perhaps only because I’m looking for it). Some thiols (bitter grapefruit), some passionfruit. Wood influence in the form of light vanilla (20 months in 1/3 new French oak, with very light toast on the barrels).
In the mouth: Moderate alcohol - 12.5/13%? [my assessment was off because it’s cold - actually 14%!]. Seems to be a faint pillow of RS - maybe 4 g/L? [nope! Bone dry at 0.01 g/L] Acidity is elevated. No phenolic bitterness. I pick up a little oak influence on the palate - in the form of creaminess. The oak is not overt. Maybe leesiness? Ripe pineapple.
20 months in 1/3 new oak.
0.01 g/L RS
Alcohol is 14%
Winemaker says to put it away for 10 years.

More acid driven than a chardonnay, less weight than a chardonnay. But had the alcohol. The nose is complex and integrated. Nothing too overt or obvious - but it was all there. A bit of vanilla - toast was very light on the barrels. Acidity is mostly clean, tartaric acid, balanced by the alcohol.

This is beautiful, complex, and refined. Definitely an “Aha!” moment for me on Bdx blanc.

Score: Between 9 and 9.5

Stellar Night of Bordeaux; 5/15/2015-5/17/2015 (NYC): Terrific stuff. The nose was a little tight on opening, but blossoms with air showing mint-menthol, cedar, orange peel. Bright, resolved, elegant yet intense with a long finish. Classic. My third favorite of the night.

From Coravin. PnP would be the metaphorical equivalent. Aromas of toast, butter, slight sweet spice, marzipan and almond, there are fruity and herbaceous notes but they are quite muted at this juncture for me. In the mouth that oak note is to the fore and rather dominates proceedings over slightly tart notes. Needs a lot more time for me.

{cork, 12%} Similar to my 2010 note, which is to say aged, soft, gentle, although finishing with gentle astringency rather than any complexity of flavour. Rather hollow and fairly short-finishing too. Very genteel. Great looking cork at 20 years too; only damp for about 20% of its length.

Lidt teglsten i farven. Luksus duft, med svag "gammel" duft. Efter et par timer tydelig bordeaux i næsen. Åbnet kl. 13, dekanteret kl. 18, drukket kl. 19 til 22. Fin udvikling frem til slut. Kan sagtens holde lang tid. Se tidligere noter.

Elegant, refined, classic Bordeaux blend. Black plum, violets, and gunflint on the nose with a clear old world character. Balanced flavors of black plum, licorice, and forest floor on the palette. Smooth, fine tannins round it all out... and it goes on and on with a long finish. Domaine de Chevalier is one of our favorite winemakers. 93 points.

Tasted at the Zachys Bordeaux Confidential tasting 5/14/15. This is an extraordinary wine and may have been the best wine at the tasting, including the reds!

Beautiful aroma. Mango, pineapple on the palate. Full bodied and with just amazing depth and elegance. This was not overpowering like the other Bordeaux whites I tried this evening. I was struck by the harmony of the components. Truly outstanding.

KR's Farewell (Imperial Treasure, Great World City): Very good indeed – this is about as solid a young Domaine de Chevalier as I have ever had. It had such a lovely nose, ripe and warm and inviting, with dusty earth and warm herbs wafting out of the glass alongside sappy cassis and dried flower aromas, then some sweet roasted capsicums and just a kiss of fragrant spice and toasty oak. This was complex, perfumed and alluring. The palate was first class too. It shared the same warm depth as the nose, but was at once clean, clear, juicy and just really delicious, with pure, sappy tones of cassis and blueberry that brought to mind fruit pastilles in their gentle sweetness, and then gentle notes of warm wood spice and lovely wafts of tobacco filling the back-palate. In spite of its youth, the velvety finesse of the wine’s tannins and the lovely integration it had made it really easy to drink after short decant. Beautiful stuff. The wine was still clearly structured under all its sappy fruit, with wonderfully bright and juicy acidity and a slight grip of drying tannins showing up right at the finish. While it is delicious now, I would leave it aside for another 8-10 years at least. It probably will age for just about forever though.

This bottle was just about over the hill (probably 5 years past the end of its optimal window)... not sure if this is too old now or it was the particular bottle.

Excellent cork, hardly any staining. Medium garnet core, pale mahogany rim. Nose is developed with cedar, mellow red fruit, touch of spice. Medium bodied, red fruit, touch of sweet tea and fruit cake, cedar, spice, not overly rich indeed a touch lean, but attractively so, with firm but reasonably fine tannins, attractive fresh acidity and a lingering, extended sweet fruited finish. Excellent, very much in the classic mould, drinking now but should go another 20 years.

Old Bordeaux with Patrick back in town (Fabio's, NYC): A wow wine from the first sip. This has it all - those classic Graves smoky, gravelly, and pipe tobacco flavours, mature earthiness and leathery notes, and a core of red and dark berried fruit that still feels very fresh and lively. The tannin here is fully integrated, and there's bright acidity beneath keeping it very polished and lively. So elegant and long. Stunning wine.

From Coravin. Aromas of pencil shavings, graphite and an almost crushed rock quality over red currant and plum. Spice and cedar. In the mouth the wine is surprisingly dense on the mid palate with fine, persistent, talc textured tannins and flavours of red plum and berries with sweet spice and a tiny sweet vanilla hint. Quite long. Nice.

From Coravin. Aromas of red berry and plum fruit backed by plentiful pencil shavings, biscuit, graphite, cream and spice. With time tobacco, slightly meaty notes, cedar and leather. Lovely nose. In the mouth the wine is juicy and rich, spicy with flavours of liquorice, berry and plum and a slightly chalky tannic grip. It's quite broad on the palate with plenty of mid palate breadth. Nice.

(Decanter's Bordeaux '05, '09, '10 tasting) :: This was one of the few disappointments of the event. Found the 2005 to be quite closed and unyielding. Shy and relatively unexpressive (although I did try this after the forceful 2009, which is a whole different game).

(Decanter's Bordeaux '05, '09, '10 tasting) :: Much more open than the 2010. Lifted red fruit, tobacco leaf, touch of pepper and a mineral undercurrent. Like the '10, still quite compact; but feels like tertiary characters / earth tones will start to unfurl in coming years. Very good.
