From magnum, and perfect provenance. A very nice wine, and well stored bottles have a lot of life left in them.

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): This is a wow wine for me. Very polished nose displaying perfectly ripe red fruits, cherries and a hint of raspberry, sweet spices, cinnamon and mineral. Medium concentration, quite precise and refined palate, fresh red fruit driven palate impression, good acidity and lovely long finish. Really a pleasant surprise. I am not too familiar with Montille. This is so exceptional I wonder what the 05 les Malconsorts Christianne is like. I highly recommend.

This is in fine fettle now, and will go another five easy. Acid backbone, some red cherry, some earth, some spice notes. Didn't want to be done with it.

A very tough, angular wine. That's not an insult - it's just very austere. I enjoyed it quite a bit and was happy to get a glimpse into the old school De Montille style. Still a nice core of dark fruit.

Kelvin's Baby Shower (Burlamacco, Amoy Street, Singapore): An excellent Puligny 1er Cru. I had quite forgotten having had this before, but from my notes on a bottle we had a year and a half ago, this showed very consistently. It had a lovely nose - sweet peaches and nectarines, a little lemon peel, some vanilla and cream, and then a little lift of exotic nutmeg spice, smoke and a hint of earthy mineral; this was a very nice and complex bouquet. It was lovely on the palate as well. Fresh and pure, yet soft and melting, it caressed the mouth with mellow waves of honeyed apples and gentle orangey tones leading into a lightly spiced finish. Little pinpricks of chalk and mineral then peeked out at the edges as the wine took on some air. There was a nice warm depth here, but it was also beautifully balanced with well-integrated acidity. Very yummy - this was still fresh, juicy and lively, yet at the same time already perfectly resolved and drinking beautifully. Lovely.

Open nose, quite expressive with lots of pure and juicy red fruit, some earth, spices, smoke. On the palate quite soft, with lovely subtle fruit notes, still good grip, well concentrated, mineral. Persistent and slightly spicy finish. Again showing very well. 91-93

Lelong Lunch (Pine Close): Montille did well in 1997 – this bottle was one of several good Volnay 1er Crus that we have had from the vintage over the past few years. Its nose showed rich aromas of plums and blackberries, with dusty earth and a savoury meatiness, then wafts of dark floral notes and brush herbs curling around the back of the bouquet. Very pleasant. The palate had a pleasing richnes for 1997 1er Cru, with ripe plum and blackberry fruit notes playing against a meaty backdrop. Well balanced and nicely structured, it was drinking nicely on the night. At the finish, the backpalate was dusted with a bit of earth and herb and something vaguely floral that reminded me of violets. A solid, if unspectacular bottle. This was enjoyable.

Medium lemon. Pronounced intensity, complex nose of citrus fruits such as lemon, stone fruits such as peach, green fruits such as pear, tropical fruits such as pineapple, hint of oak (vanilla), tertiary such as honey and wet stones. The wine is developing. The palate is dry, medium (+) acidity, medium alcohol, medium (+) body, pronounced intensity flavours of pear, peach, lemon, vanilla, wet stones. The finish is long. The wine is outstanding. It can be drunk now, but has the potential to age further for 3-5 years.

Birthday Dinner 2015 (Mitzo): This was a neat contrast to the 1980 Chambolle 1er Cru that it was paired with. Like the Chambolle, the nose was rather uncharacteristically masculine – it was earthy, funky, with a good waft of sous bois alongside some dark cherry aromas. After that though, the palate surprised with a really nice freshness and clarity for a 1990 wine, with juicy acidity flowing through sweetly fruited flavours of dark cherries and berries and a sprinkle of dried flowers, all held in a little grip of fine tannins. Fine finish too, long and fresh, with a little herb, spice and a more of those dried flower notes trailing away with a little pat of earthy sous bois right at the end. Very pleasant indeed. This had a nice shape to it, with the good weight on the fruit and fresh balance of the wine making it really nice drink. It was a great little pairing with crispy duck in truffle sauce as well – the earthy tones of the wine resonated beautiful with the truffle, while and the wine’s fresh, juicy acid cut through the fatty duck beautifully.

Casual Burg Dinner with Friends (Formento's - Chicago IL): A peculiar wine. Open and decanted an hour+ before serving. This came across as very Vosne-like in terms of good spice, but with ultra-ripe black fruit, while also showing an oddly olive background note. This certainly didn't provide much pleasure tonight, but our group really couldn't agree on its longer-term potential, with my perspective being skeptical. Honestly, if served blind, several of us would have thought this from the Rhone.

Not by far as elegant and slender as the '02, more on the heavy side, with less freshness and ethereal overtones. Also surprisingly oaky, with light fudge/caramelized sweetness. Of course it has qualities, but lacks the expected style. For example, de Montille's NSG Aux Thorey was a lot more fun and had the complex old-school personality. Big disappointment!

Some recent 2002 Burgs: Ruby red. A decant 4-5 hours earlier (major sediment in this wine) which muted the bouquet a bit. Still, an intriguing nose, full of sauvage (but clean) aromas, with dark cherry and lots of Asian spices. On palate, a big boned, serious wine, but with refinement. I served this wine blind. Everyone was guessing versions of Côte de Nuits (Gevrey, Morey etc), not Côte de Beaune, and particularly not Pommard. If you knew the wine's identity, the leathery, savoury, earthy flavours, showed this as a Pommard, but with classic de Montille signature (of this era) purity, finesse and lovely acidity. A baby. Drinking well now it really needs 5-10 more years.

Sauvage bouquet leads to a complex and daring wine that at its core is deeply fruit sweet. Not quite as seamless and integrated as that stunning prior bottle last week. Note though, that bottle was open 2-3 hours this one only 1 hour and gone.

Remarkably open, flavors and aromatics of fresh youthful fruit - predominately red, good acidity, and a soupcon of earth. Perhaps this will come out more as the wine matures, but it will take will power to save other bottles - very food friendly, too.

Rated 1 on a scale of -1 to 3.
