Tasting at domaine. 20-25% new oak, 100% whole cluster. Floral and lots of spice with red berry and cherry aromas. Same flavor profile with a good burst of energy from middle to finish. Very good balance, very good overall.

Tasting at domaine. 20% new oak, 1/3 whole cluster. Black and red cherry throughout with subtle spice. Firm in the style you expect from young Beaune 1er, perhaps a but chunky right now. Very tannins. Needs 5+ years in bottle for certain.

Tasting at domaine. Cross-section of yellow and red apple aromas and flavors here with a slightly fleshy character. Good middle with some rough angular edges at the end that I expect will soften with a few years of bottle age. I like the density here, so also like the medium-term potential.

Barrel tasting at domaine. Also from neutral 500L barrel. Lots of apple and background spice, I expect the blending in of barrels with more fat and spice will give this richness to complement the great fruit purity tasted here.

Barrel tasting at domaine. From neutral 500L barrel, the final blend will ultimately be ~20% new oak. Orchard fruit start-to-finish with good density. I like the minerality and textures throughout, even if slightly firm today. Very good potential.

Barrel tasting at domaine. An exceptional wine in the making. Great spice with red and black cherry throughout. Dense and well textured, this is already starting to show layers of complexity. 94-96 point potential here.

Barrel tasting at domaine from 1 yo barrel (cepage will be 50% new oak). 100% whole cluster. Cross-section of black and red cherry aromas and flavors. Modest spice and weight. A good NSG 1er for near-term and medium-term consumption.

Barrel tasting at domaine from 1 yo barrel. Destemmed fruit. Black cherry with meatiness and density but missing the unflattering Pommard heaviness. Clean and powerful with just enough firmness. Very good.

PnP. Few hours later a left over partial glass didn't seem to improve, maybe, even tightened up. Darker color than expected. 1/2 the fruit is said to be from Volnay and 1/2 from lower Puligny. Decent material but lacking the usual finesse and depth as I expect from this producer. Given, the producer's style, maybe this just needs much more time or prehaps blending PN from lower Puligny isn't that great of an idea? Prominent acidity, tart cherry and a little unfriendly. I like but, don't love. Especially for $35. Better at sub $25. Could be this is just closing down given the producer style and in need of lots of time to really show.

Excellent

From magnum: A solid, very good, burgundy without being very exciting or without reminding me very much of VR. Very precise and elegant and initially just slightly tart.
Needed 1-2 hours in the decanter to open up and show some licorice. The nose was better than the palate.

Year 3 - Super Tasting 1 of 5 - Dave does Birth Year Wines: I really love this style, beautiful, light, spiced, elegant. Some may find it too lean however. The nose is expansive with leather, animal fur, mint, wet soil, flint smoke, lemon, cumin and some bright, light, lively red fruit: pomegranate, cherry, raspberry. The palate is much leaner with green herbs, slightly austere tannin and good red fruited acid on the finish. Lovely.

Year 3: Super Tastings Round 1 of 5; Dave Does Birth Year Wines (Dave's House): A pristine example, sourced ex-chateau, popped and poured, followed approximately two hours. Deep ruby in the glass, with a slight brick at the rim. A beautifully perfumed nose of cherry, baking spice, damp earth, coriander, dried herb, crushed rock, leather, beet root, florals, and a touch of horse stable. With further air time, this takes on a real meaty edge and adds notes of orange rind. On the palate, this falters a bit, with a leaner profile than one would expect from the glorious nose, with medium plus acidity and moderately drying finish, with lingering tastes of red fruit, baking spice, smoked beets, mineral and leather. Lovely wine.

Wow, what has gone wrong here over the last 12-14 months? Almost no acidity there, only bold, sweet fruits tending towards the tropics. It is just OK but quite a fall by a wine that once looked so promising. We tried 5-6 bottles that have all been stored under excellent conditions so this is no exceptionally bad bottle. Drink up, while you can.

Year 3 - Super Tasting 1 of 5 - David does Birth Year Wines (Dave's House, Kitchener, ON): Nose is very giving right off the bat and quite complex with aromas of leather, animal, sauvage, smoke and a bit of stank but also possessing some pure cherry and raspberry fruit that really makes this quite inviting. Obvious whole cluster fermentation which I am a huge fan of....incense and that stemmy goodness.
One the palate, you can tell that this is a bit of a leaner year as it is dominated by the ample acidity. The tannins are also a touch austere. The wine is very clean and shows shows tart red fruit, spice, minerals, orange peel and a dominant lactic note but definitely leans to the more rustic side of Burgundy.
The finish is medium with good complexity. Overall, this is a touch disappointing as the nose showed such promise...

Wines at the Bistro de l'Hotel Beaune: Colour good ruby. A complex bouquet of black spices, dirt, red cherry, red currant and rusty iron filings. With time in the glass, the nose moved more rusty. On palate flavours of red cherries, dry underbrush and savoury, earthy, rusty and (dried) herby nuances. Good acidity, structure and dry extract. An excellent accompaniment to my succulent filet de boef with truffles. Drinking beautifully now but not yet very secondary, so it has years to go, I would say.
