This stood toe to toe with the amazing Sherry that preceded it. Golden-yellow in colour, with a distinctive nose of wafting orange peel smells, some fresh wooly socks, and maturing secondary tones of mushrooms, dried mangoes, wolfberries and red dates along with rich chrysanthemum tea and white flower scents. With time, some earthy mineral scents start emerging. Really nice - this could only be a top-end Loire. We were wondering whether it was a Huet Vouvray, before settling on a Quarts de Chaume. The palate was deceptively young though, with most of us guessing mid-90s. It had a wonderful balance. Off-dry, creamily textured, with some sweetness and a little caramel creme note on the attack, but it was also absolutely singing with perfectly integrated acidity that just kept the wine lithe and focused throughout. Wonderfully deep, delicious flavours too - lemon cream at the fore, and then peach, nectarine and dried lychees, moving into a super-long honeyed finish layered with serious mineral notes. Beautiful. A very complex, very complete wine. Great to drink now, but I can only imagine at getting better and better as the years go by. Given the balance and the sugars, this could be well nigh indestructible. |

Nice complexity and depth on both the mid palate and finish. 13% alcohol. What a great bargain at $13.99/bottle and by a land slide my personal best QPR of the year. BTW that Nowak guy wouldn't know a good wine if it hit him in the face, Jane on the other hand helps bring up the average :) |
