La Paulée de New York Grand Tasting (Metropolitan Pavilion - New York NY): Closed nose, with red fruits and spice hiding? Earthy, deep, and spicy on the palate. This looks to be very good, but still not wowing me at the price point.

La Paulée de New York Grand Tasting (Metropolitan Pavilion - New York NY): Light red fruit on the nose - restrained, austere. Green on the palate - some fruit and spice, earth. Red cherry and stone finish. Probably will improve, but no where near enough to justify the price tag. Avoid the 11 Red Burgs. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 4.5+/6, Finish - 4.5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14.5+/20 (with 15.5/20 potential.)

Morey-St Denis Grand Cru Dinner (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Excellent. While not quite as forward and ready as the 2001 Clos de Lambrays served alongside, I actually thought this was qualitatively the better wine. It had a very lush nose – dark and deep, with almost liquered cherries and blueberries, seasoned with sweet spice, violets and some earth. With time, a little dusting of herb and roasted almonds and a sweet kiss of dried fruit started drifting out as well - a lovely, rich bouquet. The palate had lots of substance to it as well, with a rich, velvety flow of dark cherries and berries, again with a slightly liquered edge, and then a dash of herbs and spices towards the long finish. This was a seductive, voluptuous wine, very full and deep and generous, yet shaped by a nice clarity and freshness from the vintage. However, even though this bottle seemed a lot more open than one I had some 6 years back, it still needs lots of time yet. There was always something a bit primary and stubborn at the core of the wine, a sense of stinginess that seemed to belong more to a 2002 than a 2001 Grand Cru. I really liked this, but I would give it another 5-6 years more in the bottle to unwind.

Really great aromatics that burst out of the glass. Nice secondary notes of forest floor and damp earth to go with dried dark cherry fruit notes. Lots of acidity but it's well integrated. This was terrific and in a really great spot.

Voluptuous tannins with a nice fresh fragrant iris-violet nose, alike his 2007 l'Eglise Clinet Pomerol fellow, I would say... I am wondering if this wine needs more cellaring.

Elegant and pretty. Less acidity dominant than many other 1996s. Really quite open and silkly.

This was enjoyable and a nice pairing with grilled salmon. Straight-forward red fruits, especially black cherry, came to mind. Good depth to the wine; it had enough acid to complement a meal. Same flavors were on the medium finish.

Food: Chinese
Duration: 2 hours
Condition: perfect
Aroma: blueberry with a mix of ripe red fruits, white flowers, rose pedals
Notes: decanted. Purple in color, this wine looks and feels much younger than it should. I think this wine is not as balanced as the other Clos De tarts I've had before. Although tannins smoothed out but I do have a feeling that this wine should be cellared for at least 5 more years. I do not think it's fair to give a right judgement on this wine yet, nevertheless I don't like it right now.

Burgundy Tasting (Ivy, George Street, Sydney): Red cherry and berry that is quite concentrated, stalks, cream, new oak…wet, slightly bitter spice, muted, lacks fruit, flour textured tannin. Massively disappointing.

La Paulée de New York - The Verticals (Colicchio & Sons - New York NY): Tasted in 10/09/03 vertical, brief note. Better than another bottle I recall from a couple of years ago, this is still very fresh and ripe, but has the energy to support that fruit. I expect this will also reward another decade in the cellar.

La Paulée de New York - The Verticals (Colicchio & Sons - New York NY): Tasted in 10/09/03 vertical, brief note. Mostly black cherry aromas with enticing spice, palate showing more red cherry. All very elegant and intricately textured. New oak still a bit pronounced, but that should soften in another year or three. This will most likely reward patience in the cellar.

La Paulée de New York - The Verticals (Colicchio & Sons - New York NY): Tasted in 10/09/03 vertical, brief note. Bigger and bolder vs the '10 with more focus on black fruit and spice intensity. Large scaled fruit flavors with the density and structural support for longevity.

La Paulée de New York Grand Tasting (Metropolitan Pavilion - New York NY): Tasting, brief note. In contrast to the slightly underripe 2011, this shows lots of ripe black cherry, dark chocolate and baking spice. Also 50% whole cluster, this was both bright and fat with good textures and balance, even if just moderate depth.

La Paulée de New York Grand Tasting (Metropolitan Pavilion - New York NY): Tasting, brief note. 50% whole cluster. Floral start with spice and red berries. Flavors were slightly less appealing to me, with more structure than ripe fruit and firm tannins for the level of concentration. I guess this was one of the more controversial wines at the tasting, with several people telling me they thought it showcased the green character of many 2011s, but I really can't completely agree with that.

Sydney Burgundy Celebration: Iconic Wineries (Blind): One of the hardest wines to get a good read on in this flight. At first the nose is closed down but it did start to show some stalks, violets and a fair bit of earth. The red fruits on the palate did have more presence along with good length and acidity. I'm not loving this right now and would want to see it with a serious amount more time in the bottle. I was not surprised when its identity was revealed as I tried it one year ago and it was rather introverted, with this bottle probably showing even more so.

Sweet fruit with some citrus blossom florals and some oak show on the very pleasing nose. Reminiscent of the 2010. Lovely wine, balanced with a touch of spice. Has power for the long haul but already showing finesse. Nice juicy acidity and red-fruited character give this a sense of lift. Right in my wheelhouse. Love this wine. 94-95

Medium red, rather translucent, with some apparent age. Rather herbaceous, black tea, hints of green with some mature red fruit, sour cherries and dried flowers. Rather meaty and austere. Palate seemed rather disjointed, with lack of structure and acidity. Some dried plums, prunes and grapefruit, but again, there was some unpleasant grass flavours to this wine. Tart and sour with some time. Not a good 2004.
