5/13, decent cork (c25% soaked).
Still quite youthful appearance - medium ruby/garnet with a pale garnet rim. Showing lovely pure fruit and florals on the nose - blueberry, black cherry, violets, touch of meatiness and mineral with time in glass buit still quite primary. Medium/full bodied, lovely pure fruit on initial entry, spice, meaty notes, very fine tannins, complex and long on the mid-palate, with lovely vibrant acids carrying a long, lightly grippy finish. Outstanding wine which can be enjoyed now but which also has plenty left in the tank.

This might have been an a slightly off bottle. I thought I sensed a bit of overmature fruit and a slight vinegar smell. The cork looked great but somehow I wasn’t captivated by the nose. There was something slightly dirty and funky about it. Other tasters thought it was a very good wine.

Eric brought this in Jim's BD dinner. It was a powerful wine and the strongest compared with others in the night. It was still very young.

Nose: licorice, gasoline, black fruits, mint, tar
Notes: Tasted blind and was told by the owner that she double decanted this wine 2 hours prior to drinking. Very full bodied and still quite tannic with the kind of tar and gasoline notes that I'm typically not a big fan of. Black fruits started to pop up in the 3rd hour but even so I did not think this was overly interesting. Plenty more time is needed for this wine to be in the right drinking window so this should go into the cellar for at least another 7-8 years.

La Paulée de Los Angeles - The Verticals (Maybourne Hotel - Beverly Hills CA): Walkaround vertical tasting. Faintly reductive. Complex array of red and black cherries and berries, but still firm structure making this barely forthcoming. Spice and whole cluster character is somewhere between very charming and too pronounced. Overall, also tough to fully assess right now but there is so much great stuff here, I am excited about where this will emerge 2030 forward.

La Paulée de Los Angeles - The Verticals (Maybourne Hotel - Beverly Hills CA): Walkaround vertical tasting. Lots here, extremely lush, while firmly backward, this is a very powerful wine that shows the 2016 vintage well. Again, I struggled with an overall assessment, but like where there is heading a lot.

La Paulée de Los Angeles - The Verticals (Maybourne Hotel - Beverly Hills CA): Walkaround vertical tasting. Alluring red fruit aromas with perfume. Palate didn't quite follow through, lots here, but not quite harmonious, which is unusual for the vintage. I was slightly perplexed and was hoping to revisit, but time did not permit. Lots here, patience required is my general assessment.

La Paulée de Los Angeles Grand Tasting (The Fairmont - Santa Monica CA): Walkaround tasting. Ripe and lush, this showcasing a broad array of red and black fruits with savory spice and an intense power. Very good in every dimension, just slightly backward for now, brilliant potential from 2029 forward, 95-96 point potential.

Double decanted before serving. Incredible aromatics with flowers, red fruit, stems, violets, and perfume. On the palate, it was dense with good purity and transparency. Possibly one of the wine of the vintage. It is one of the very few 2011 that has aging potential. 94+

Assessing 2021 Burgundy-La Paulée de Los Angeles Grand Tasting (Fairmont Miramar, Santa Monica): Medium ruby. Oak on the nose. Medium weight, beautiful sappiness. Dark red and black fruit, excellent acidity, rich chocolate tannin, endless reserves of structure, and an appropriately dry finish. Quintessentially elegant, gorgeously harmonious Grand Cru. Fantastic and it should have a 30+ year life span from here. Another moving wine.

Assessing 2021 Burgundy-La Paulée de Los Angeles Grand Tasting (Fairmont Miramar, Santa Monica): Pale. Fragrant green herbs. Elegant, light, subtle, and not a bit tart. Light red fruit, a little spice, gentle soil, and very refined tannins. Excellent and very fine in an ethereal light style. The question over time will be "Too light?" to be definitively outstanding wine.

Wines Tasted at the La Paulée Verticals Session (The Maybourne, Beverly Hills): Pale color. Light weight. Bright, lively, supple red/black fruit, great acidity, fine soil throughout, less noticeable char than the earlier vintages. Fine, earthy tannins. The epitome of fragrant, elegant Grand Cru wine. Completely seductive and again, outstanding.

Wines Tasted at the La Paulée Verticals Session (The Maybourne, Beverly Hills): Slightly deeper color than the 2015. Much less stemminess in the aromas. Medium weight with an exhilarating, enveloping feel. Sweet, ripe red and blue fruit, a light touch of wood, light char (less than the 2015), terrific acidity, and here, an uplifting dollop of green from the whole cluster. Incredible balance, texture, and finish. Absolutely superb wine that is already exciting. Unlimited potential development over the next 15-20 years. This is a strikingly finer, lighter style than Clos de Tart wines from the late 1990's and early 2000's.

Wines Tasted at the La Paulée Verticals Session (The Maybourne, Beverly Hills): Pale ruby. Obviously stemmy. Lovely lighter weight. Subtly sweet red and blue fruit, significant char, excellent acidity and soil, moderate drying tannins. At least very good, but I think that the whole cluster treatment is overdone in this wine compared to the more judicious handling of the 2 subsequent vintages. Needs a lot of time in any case.

Dark Vosne spices and bright acidity stand out on Day 1; just barely secondary character; too young & tight. Day 2: opened up beautifully, needs several years yet. 92+ on 2nd day.

1998 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart

Clos de Tart Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

2/24/2024 - Yuchen Likes this wine: 96 points

The 1998 Burgundy, due to the climate of that year, resulted in thicker grape skins because of its strong tannins.
Fortunately, Clos de Tart has always been known for its strong structure, so this isn't much of an issue.
The color of the wine is excellent, with a ruby hue tinged with a hint of brown, making it hard to believe it's a 26-year-old Burgundy. It exudes aromas of red cherries, cranberries, and a subtle scent of dates, that dense yet sweet fruit sensation.
The acidity is moderate, with hardly any perception of tertiary aromas. It embodies my favorite elegant Burgundian style. Both the sommelier and friends feel that perhaps it could be aged for another 5-10 years. Looking forward to the experience it brings next time it's opened.

Light body. Still tight. Needs more time. Orange peel notes. Acidity too high. Tannic into the finish, but somewhat delicate.
