Decanted 3hrs, from entry to finish this is silky, balanced, elegant and delicious. Cherry, spice, hints of earth and some dark berries. I have now tried the 08 and 09 regular cabs and both have been fantastic. I really need to buy more of these.

Supposedly this is a weak vintage, but you wouldn't know it from this bottle. Like all vintages of Black Cat, this has that core of beautiful dark fruit. Perhaps not as full bodied but still lush and delicious and was enjoyed with the family on Fire Island.

Outstanding. Opened impromptu after the insane fireworks display against the Bay Bridge this evening (apparently someone played basketball well or something), Sara and I let patiently sit for an hour, occasionally taking a whiff to confirm a lovely deep and floral nose that was catching updrafts in the glass. I am terrible with locating specific fruits in a wine, so apologies for just saying this was smooth and lovely and the mouthfeel was bold. The taste lasted a good 30 seconds, maybe more, and at moments it was like North African spices. Not much in the way of bracing tannins, which really encourages another taste. Fantastic. My first EMH. So very very very not my last.

A bit muted the first night, though the nose was a blend of dark cherries and roses (yeah, the flowers - never detected that before). Opened very nicely the second night, nose and palate had red cherries dominating.

Very well made, and in its early window for consuming. Tasted over 4 hours and it still was improving greatly at that point. Awesome sauce!

The '06 is a beauty. Everything is quite simply in the right place. Our first bottle of this in 2-3 years, it has certainly unfurled itself since then. Well done, Merrill.

Black Cat 101 (Undisclosed Italian Location in NY, NY): When I opened it for decanting (few hours before the dinner), the first thing I said to myself is “Wow, the smell!”. At dinner, one of the tasters in the table picked the glass, smelled it and said “this will be a star”. Having this one as the last in the set reinforces the potential of this 'baby black cat'. And it is a 'youngester'. If you like your cabs more 'mature' it is not there yet. It already has great nose, but it is more ‘fruit front’ than the ’06 and ’09. Currant and berries on the taste, less of the spices compared with the ’09 and ’06. The cherry notes came in later (maybe after the equivalent of about 4-5 hours decanting)

Summary- this one will be one of the vintages that Black Cat will be most proud of, but it is young and needs time to develop the spices/herbal, and earthy notes that other black cat vintages have.

Vote of the bottle status- We left about a glass in the decanter that went to the ‘house’ for their enjoyment. I think it's worth letting the additional bottles sleep for a year or two.

Black Cat 101 (Undisclosed Italian Location in NY, NY): After tasting through many black cats, we do agree this one is a good representation of the vineyard. The nose was very consistent with the previous times I had the ’09 (last year), but it is certainly still developing and even getting better.

The earthy and spice notes get as secondary (compared with the ’06) and it provides a great ‘intro to cab’ on the nose, palate and finishing. It does need decanting but it can be easily enjoyed for several hours.

Tasters opinion: All five votes thumbs up. The ones who picked the less ‘spicy’ food voted this one as their WOTN. Restaurant’s opinion: “can we have one more taste?” (sure you can!) . I would even go as far as saying that with proper decanting, the ’09 delivers certain underlying characteristics that one has in the ’09 SS (not surprising). I think it would last longer than current estimation of CT users (~2020 at the time this note is written). I ranked it before at 94 and I keep holding it. Well done, Merrill.

Vote of the bottle status- bottle emptied, one of the people who voted it as their WOTN took the bottle.

Black Cat 101 (Undisclosed Italian Location in NY, NY): A great example of maturing black cat, and maturing cab.

First thing we all said “spices!” and blackberry/cherry. Very open spices, even somewhat more ‘rounded’ then last year (rounded, or balance, I should say). The tasters said “wow” on the nose, which kept developing over dinner. On the finish, the fruits give their ‘space’ to the earthy tastes, so to speak.

Food pairing-- Those who had the spicy dishes (or steak) said it complemented their meals best (better than the ’09). Those who took more ‘balanced’ main dishes (pasta, pork chops) tended to prefer the ’09 over the ’06. Both ag on this one are just wow, and developing over the dinner. A solid 93-4 for me, but I sometimes wonder if the points do justice to such multi-layer wine. Summary: Merrill knows how to make cabs that will age better than all of us :-)

Vote of the bottle status- bottle emptied, taken home by one of the tasters as a souvenir.

Lots of cassis and red/black berry fruit, with none of the herbal character the less ripe vintages can have. There's some hints of oaky vanilla/chocolate but they are pleasant accents rather than obtrusive. This is quite rich and dense, with lots of concentration, with a nice gravelly edge to the finish. There's still quite a bit of structure that and acidity to hold it together, the fruit isn't overly sweet or raisined. Just starting to show hints of cedary/tobacco development, but really still quite primary. Very nice with a ribeye. If I had any more I would wait a few years longer, I think this wine still has more aging potential. A bit of a riper style for Black Cat, but a lovely example.

2007. Dark red fruit, leather, anise dominate the nose. Red fruit, spice, chewy, nice acidity. Could use a bit more depth but I love the house style that Merrill is known for. Great stuff.

Fragrant nose is apparent as the wine was poured into a decanter. Dark red fruit on the nose 3+ hours later. Fruit and a hint of spice with a long finish. Good balance of fruit and acidity with noticeable tannins. Paired well with grilled ribeye steaks.

An exquisite wine to accompany the assertive food at Costata. There is a core of black cherry fruit, a velvety mouthfeel with acidity providing the balance, and then the tannins kick in. Drinking beautifully now but seems to have plenty of life left.

Nose: Rich dark fruit with herbaceous undertones. Not green or brown, but floral and maybe a slight sage aspect; I can't really put my finger on it.

Palate: Pure velvet. The fruit is presenting itself so well at this point that it's neither in the forefront nor is it hiding. There are leathery, structured tannins and just enough acid to provide a nice edge and mid-palate bite.

Finish: Beautifully long and moderately astringent. The dark fruit character follows all the way down and leaves a lingering tartness accented with an ever-so-slight smokiness.

Thoughts: Damn!! This is a what I'd call a quintessential representation of cabernet. Not over oaked, over ripe or over done in any way but displays a deft, subtle hand guiding the wine to exactly where it needs to be. I pulled the cork at 2:30 PM and decanted but didn't get to eat dinner until around 9:00-9:30. Suffice it to say that after 7 hours in a decanter it hasn't faded a bit, in fact it's only gotten better. I'm glad I've got some more of this.

Given all of the hype we'd heard around this wine I was a bit concerned about it being able to live up, but it was very good. Opened, decanted, and drank over the course of 3 hours. Not a lot of change in the wine during that time, but it started ready to go. Good blackberry fruit, nice balancing earth. Paired very well with a pork ragu sauce. Glad we have some more of these.

EMH Black Cat Vineyard Visit (Calistoga, CA): It made progress since the last time I tasted it, and became somewhat more integrated, but I would say 'drink the '07 (or '09 SS) now' and leave this one aside.

The fruits on the nose and palate are beautiful, but it is not as structured/integrated compared with the '07 or '09SS. The development process of the '11SS was interesting, as Merrill presented (and it was a hard vintage, indeed). It does bring to the front more of the special elements of black cat. But, it requires more time to bring to the front the earthy notes and minerals that other 'black cat' special selection emphasize. It can also be the contest with the '09SS and '07 that out perform themselves again. Color wise, this one seem to be darker than other SS (did not put it near the '12 though, so at least compared with the '07 and '09SS)

Vote of the status of the glass- I think I finished most of my tasting. Wonder how it worked for the others that day- I think the late afternoon tasters enjoyed a better '11SS

EMH Black Cat Vineyard Visit (Calistoga, CA): A notch or two above, from the nose (notably more integrated and special, yet maintaining the 'black cat' signature line). On the taste, black fruits, and even more- a good balance of the peppers, vanilla (slightly), and cassis. Great floral on the nose, and wonderful balance of the earthy minerals.

Second taste of the special (first time in 2014), a refill on the taste requested (and received, thank you Merrill :-) ). It was also great to understand better the concept and the development of the special selection line.

I hold my 96 from last time. Legitimate candidate for a wine that will last, and last, and last... No rush to drink this one, but have I had a case, I would open it twice a year

EMH Black Cat Vineyard Visit (Calistoga, CA): The first one of the flight, and second time I'm having this one. I may have underestiamted it last time--cassis on the nose (more than I recall from last year) and the spices and minerals show very well. The nose is more integrated than it was last year (or simply it had harder competition last year). It could be a 'star' of its own meal. Actions speak louder than words- the lady finished the entire taste, and asked for extra. A non common move, by all means.

I hold my opinion from last year, "IMHO, it just keeps maturing" (So I am happy I have one resting in storage)

Only thing I may add is that from all four tasted on Sunday, this one had somewhat more vanilla on the nose (especially compared with the '12)

EMH Black Cat Vineyard Visit (Calistoga, CA): Had it along with the '07, '09SS, and '11SS. Build to last very long.

It does need alot of decanting (I believe we tasted it after it being decanted about 2.5 hours, and it may need more). On the floral, currant and berries (blueberries?), with earthy notes (minerals in the background, toasty on the palate. The peppery taste is more secondary). Very smooth. I would agree with previous notes that at this time it is somewhat more bitter compare to other black cats, but it does come together very well. Having this one as #4 in the set was also interesting as one can see the growth potential of this 'baby black cat'. Impressive as always, and I think it is one EMH vineyards will be proud of for years to come. (92 with positive prospect).

If you drink now, enjoy the fruity floral, but give it more than 2-3 hours decant (imho, I believe Merrill may give more feedback here)

Decanted 2.5 hrs, consumed over 1.5 hrs. Powerful nose of dark fruit, some raspberry, blueberry, flower petal. Palate seemed modest in comparison to the nose but not a shy wine. Very balanced with right acidity, mid palate fruit, surprisingly soft tannins and easy drinking. Medium weight, medium to long finish. Not highly complex at this stage but drinking well and delicious.
