NV Foggo Wines Shiraz Black Myriah

This is how sparkling Shiraz is done! Made using méthode champenoise, you can taste the small beads enhancing the rich syrupy McLaren Vale Shiraz. Rather than getting harsh tannin mixed with metalic carbonation, you get a very complex and structured wine, not unlike a good sparkling white.

Very advanced nose, with caramel, barbecue smoke, and blueberry. Palate shows rich fruit (cherry, blueberry), with decadent notes of caramel and chocolate.

Impenetrable dark ruby. Blackberry jam and licorice nose. Full bodied with stinging acid and soft tannin - you can feel the 14.7% alc. Not a lot to like about this unfortunately. Too big and unbalanced without much length or complexity

Wonderful aged character.

Tasted like tomato sauce. Great acidity, a touch of bay, fennel, and other herbs. Still has some tannin. Quite good, not great

The oldest Shiraz I have tried.

The balance between fruit and bottle character was great. Served after an hour open there was a cherry raspberry fruit flavor backed by bottle spice and smokiness. After an additional hour the wine seemed to be a bit peaked and took on some acid is oxidative character.

I recommend drinking up and do this as a pop and pour waiting only long enough for the bottle funk to blow off.

Past best, but fully developed after 4-5 hours of breathing. Fruit had faded but still some earthy tones and peppered spice and plum fruit character. Long finish and slightly acidic balance, cork lacking quality and perhaps responsible for slight in-balance. Missing that intense sweetness at that 4-5 year period, but still a quality wine.

Drank well. Really opened up after a couple hours of air with pleasant notes of chocolate and oak. One bottle left that I will hang onto for a while longer and see how it fares.

Drinking well right now. Well rounded shiraz fruit but with enough acid to go well with Mexican food. The nose is more finesse than large and has a very deep streak of layered fruit. Very enjoyable.

Very aromatic directly upon opening. Loved the fruit and the fact that it was just this side of too much. Seems to be drinking very nicely, despite drinking window advisories.

Quite a bit of sediment; slight bricking. Very good but not overwhelmingly complex. Multilayered with a few distinctive notes of green olive and tar. Medium finish. Give this another year or two.

To my tastes the Foggo's didn't really get going in 2004, a damn shame given the 2002's were excellent (across the range) and the 2003's weren't far behind. Thankfully the 2004 grenache looks pretty good. Light garnet red, not in the rose class but friendly looking all the same. Medium strength nose, raspberries, a hint of sweetness and some bitter aromas underpin the bouquet. Firmer again to taste, although the slightly thick fruits are quite expressive. Some heat in the back palate. The structure appear to be holding up well and I dare say the wine may be a touch young. Good enough but won't set the world on fire in the value stakes at $29.

Sparkling reds can be tough to love but this was a (very) goodun'. Soft shiraz aromas (think plums) backed up with elegant plummy fruits in the mouth. Some conjecture as to whether this was slightly corked; I read it as musty oak, but others disagreed. Regardless, a very good wine.

Despite being in the wine retailing game for 5 years now there's always something new to try....in this case a sparkling cinsault.Pours a big fizzy head but fades away to nothing in a nano second. Classic rose look. Palate wise a fairly dry style. Some generic red fruity notes fill out the middle palate but thins out in the back. Ultimately lacks body and stuffing.
