2005 François Parent Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets

Mushroom aromas, and I said this long before reading the note on the from label. Intriguing.

Rich forward 2005 Volnay. Savoury, interesting. Slightly varnish oak. Disappointingly a touch of oxidation on the finish - drink up!

Burgundy Night: Pick the Grand Cru (Extra Space): Tasted blind. Pop and poured.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of granite minerality, tea leaves, dark earth, dark red cherries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark red cherries, redcurrant, ripe strawberry, earth, minerality, and a slight meatiness. Long finish.
Very good quality. Interesting dark character here for a Volnay. Possibly the iron in the Fremiets soil leads to more structure and muscularity and maybe the darker character. No doubt still has the elegance of Volnay though. Will develop well over the next 5+ years.

Vosne-Romanee Grand Crus for Michael and Peter's Birthdays (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): A very different animal from the three older wines that preceded it – this was at once a more masculine, yet lighter-bodied expression of the vineyard. Still, it was a very good wine in its own right. The nose felt a bit grumpy when compared to the exuberant flower and spice bouquets of the other wines. This was marked as much by funk, sous bois notes as it was by its sweeter scents of sappy berries and maraschino cherries ringed with some wilting florals and a gentle spiciness. It was on the palate where the wine showed its strength though. It was wonderfully integrated, and there was such a nice purity about it, with ringingly clear notes of black cherries and dark berries seamlessly woven together with spice and earth, flowers and orange peel, and a little streak of bittersweet mineral. I thought this was just a touch lighter than its flight mates – more about clarity and minerality than fruit and flowers maybe. Saying that though, there was clearly Grand Cru depth and breadth here, all accompanied by a great spine of bright, juicy acidity and a strong, almost stern structure leading into a fine finish laced with lots of spice and a long, stony tail. Very good indeed, and there is room for improvement too. It is still rather tight though, especially at the back-end. I think it may need 6-8 more years before peak. Minerally, lighter than others, but still Grand Cru weight.

Good wine but not great. A lot better than expected with none of the green or bitter side of the vintage. Open on the nose , good dark fruit side . On the palate it has a nice round feel, drinks well now and the tannins are soft. Still good acidity and life in it. 90

Ultimo lunch time tasting (Ultimo wine centre (but now vintage cellars)): Spicy almost coffee notes on the nose. A chalky quality, very slight cherry. With agitation unripe blackberry and herbal notes. In the mouth there is more of the same with juicy acidity and long, fine, persistent tannin. Very, very nice indeed.

Quite a light brick color. Nose is darkly floral and musty cherry. Entry is clean and fresh dark cherry. Fairly lightweight mouth building to a nice finish of a touch of spice and very fine tannins well back. Leaves a very long tart cherry finish. This is lightweight and a real delight.

Color: Deep ruby
Smell: An almost dense nose of brambles, earth, blue & black fruit followed by notes of cedar & other seasoned wood
Taste: Dark fruits, mushrooms, earth, and clay.
Overall: A wine that needs time still...but is enjoyable with a good doase of air. Give this baby time....check back in 2019

Friday night wines at Thierry's place (Wellington, New Zealand): Ruby colour, a little lighter than the Martinborough Vineyards, quite primary looking. A gorgeous bouquet of dark florals, red fruits, some funk and Asian spice. In the mouth, quite primary (we're guessing 2007 or 2009 red Burgundy). This wine is just beautifully balanced and poised, with real Grand Cru depth and power. The flavours are of lovely bright red fruits and earth, with gorgeous acid balance and minerality on the finish. Drinking well now, but no hurry. Quite a rare wine I think (thanks, Mike).

Dark red. Very musty and funky nose. This really took some time to blow off. With time, this developed a really elegant nose with slight pepper and spice. On the palate, it was round, extremely elegant, with cherries and stewed strawberries. It was a real contrast to the Joseph Roty Charmes VV 04. This is a wine in its ideal drinking window. It will not have the legs to last a long distance, but it is perfectly enjoyable now.

Hot vintage..heavy terroir.....this should be a poor combination but this really struts its stuff very well right now - takes some time to open up, but after 2 hours there is a nice balance of power and density. Very clean and pure on the palate with no heaviness. Classic Pommard, with a broody darkness about it lurking underneath the surface. Good stuff. Drinking or hold.

Schade!

Portland CellarTracker offline (Sauvage et Fausse Piste Winery, Portland, Oregon): Opens with forest mushrooms, rootstalk, strawberries, urbane and funk aromas. Foreboding on the palate with lift, earth, tart raspberries and provocative underbrush. Masses of structure, enduring on the most becoming finish. This was a first for me and I feel most fortunate to have had the opportunity to sample this pedigree wine.

Classic Monthelie nose of tar and stone dust. Tangy and round and delicious now, with some tannin, not a lot for a 2005 but enough that I'd want to hold this for a few more years yet (plus there's no sign of tertiary flavors). Maybe then some additional complexity will emerge to justify an outstanding score. With the amount of fruit here I can't imagine this NOT lasting until 2020 or so.

Wonderful floral notes with hints of strawberry and cherry on the nose. Gorgeous mouth-feel on the palate with notes of raspberry, truffle, toasted oak, along with prominent earthy and mineral notes. This wine has a lot of different things happening with it - in a good way. Complex and well-balanced, this wine really delivered. Approachable now but no rush to drink this.

Overall, this was drank too soon. Its flavors were tight and unevolved with dark cherry, charcoal, and baking spices dominating the palate. The tannis are still prominent and there's only a whisper of red florals. Despite being an infant, I enjoyed it a lot.
