2012 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre

Curiousity got the better of me, but I don`t regret opening this one. The best young MdT I`ve tried and it was really more inviting than one could fear. I had perhaps expected more of the trademark linear precision and less fruit at this point, but it was almost the other way around. All the parts are here for a great future. Excellent balance and texture as always.

Light yellow. Gentle aromas of sea shell and citrus. Medium weight, caressing texture. Combination of orange and lemon fruit, fine acidity for a 2005, and an endless, chalky finish. I would have loved to tasted it side by side with the regular Montée de Tonnerre, but by my recollection, this is finer and less broad than that wine. Truly excellent.

Was a bit worried about this bottle as it is from 09. First taste was good but over time it gained more weight and complexity. It drank nicely but never found that sizzle that Raveneau is known for. I would drink this now as I don't see it getting better with age.

Simply delicious. Still an adolescent, but certainly within a very nice drinking window. It appears the one maturing bottle I had a few years back was an anomaly. Beginning to round out and to get that particular flavor profile recognizable only as Raveneau. A treat that is great now, but appears to have plenty of life left.

Stellar showing. Perfect bottle that was deep, alive and layered. Wonderful iodine and crab shells gave way to secondary notes of mushroom and broth. Pristine and outclassing younger chablis grand cru at the table. My final bottle. Drink and savor if you have them.

My first crack at the 00 Butteaux, and I really liked it. But like lots of the Raveneau, it seems like two to three hours of decanting is insufficient.

Waxy nose explosive on the palate big fleshy wine. Lots of softer round acids. The finish was long and lasting.

Full yellow. Slightly muddled, funky aromatics at first, but these quickly sorted themselves out and revealed citrus and white flowers. Light to medium weight. A mouthful of quintessential Chablis goodness-lime, herbs, iodine focused by great acidity. Vanilla, chalkiness, and that Raveneau beeswax toward the end wrap up an altogether thrilling bottle that is more youthful than the tint originally suggested.

Very, very pretty. In contrast to the recent bottle of 2000 MdT that was an over-the-hill dud this is in fine shape. Great depth for Montmains. Good god: plenty going on here to dazzle the senses of smell and taste. Unquestionably excellent.

Flinty, mineral. Very intense with correspondingly sharp acidity like is typical for Raveneau. Lots of chrysanthemum and actually tasted a little bit more aged than 2008. Very good all the same.

Splendid aged Chablis drinking at the top of it game. Has some toast, mushroom and honey development. There are notes of lemon, grapefruit, orange and oyster shell and it has the usual Raveneau texture and mouthfeel. There is still excellent cut to the finish and you ae left with a flavour of citrus and butter once the wine is swallowed.

The Raveneau 11's show some greener elements and this is no exception. It smells of gin botanicals. There is plenty of citrus and the wine has good depth and volume but it needs a bit of time to even out a little.

Still young and needs time, but after about 30-40 min it was showing beautifully. Long and deep, that mineral punch, funky nose that blossomed into lemons. Then it quieted down again.

Given that all five of the last notes posted noted premox I decided to try one. A youthful light yellow color, beautiful bouquet of white fruits, chalk and limestone with hints of citrus. The texture was richer than most, good acidity, balance and weight. Over the next two hours the flavor profile moved from a taut expression of minerality and citrus to a richer, rounder wine with layers of silky fruit now woven in, nice finish. A beautiful chablis from start to finish. Based on this bottle, this 15 year old is in early maturity and should be delicious for the next 5+ years.

Served knowing the producer and vineyard, but not the vintage. Appearance of youth in the glass (I guessed 2002) – little to no hint of oxidation. Nose and palate continued the charade, lemons and sea shells with a notable mint characteristic. Palate was layered, with plushness at entry that was unexpected but enjoyable – resolving with ample acid in the mid-palate and through the long finish. A wonderful match with Amuse-bouche and first course at La Toque. When the Somm came back to refill our glasses, I was blown away to see this was a 1991. Wow.

Reunion Dinner in DC (Red Hen - Washington, DC): Fresh, clean, and clear. Even in its youth, the depth to this wine was just outstanding. The aromas were exotic and deep with oceanic tones that mixed nicely with fresh lemon and dill. Great weight to the palate with plenty of acidity and elegance. Loved it.
