2005 Giacomo Conterno Barnera d' Alba Casina Erancia - Serralunga d'Alba

Decantet. First glas right away.

Deep dark red color, towards black in senter. Clear and clean.

Nose aromas show dark berries, smoke and tart. Cherries. Vanilla? Wood and smoke from the fireplace. Ashtray. Dark spices.

Stunning smooth on the palet, rounded and full bodied. Beef, tart and smoth integrated tannins.
This wine is mouthwatering. It wonderfully well balanced and has loads of layeras. Komplex and ritch in tast. Long.

After 3-4 hours this shows a great open sweetnes, with ripe fruits and berries. Over all ripe cherries and dark spices.

Opened on the 18th of July, but decided to not drink too much until the 20th. This wine needs a ton of aeration. Like my notes from 2011, this wine continues to be amazingly dark and structured. Flavors of molasses, dark cherries, tar, and wild flowers. Probably more approachable in five to ten years time.

Intense dark fruited nose with tobacco, spice, rich soil and sweet herbs. It was acid driven with incredible vibrancy and complexity, showing tart cherry and balsamic tones, which seemed to expand across the senses. Ripe yet firm on the finish with a lasting thrust of dark fruit. It's a truly serious wine that would make a believer out of any Barbera naysayer.

Monumental Barolo dinner - Monfortino, Giacosa, Taurasi and La Romanee (Fleet Street Kitchen - Baltimore, MD): So interesting to compare these. Beguiling delicate and pure nose displaying fresh sweet red fruits, strawberry, raspberry and only a hint of cherry, beautifully floral, rose, just the right amount of mint and cedar, white truffle and tar. The least concentration of the flight but perhaps the most pure and energetic. Medium concentration, vibrant, pure delicate yet energetic red fruit, bright acidity and love long clean sweet finish. Incredibly enjoyable in dare I say very Burgundian way!

Monumental Barolo dinner - Monfortino, Giacosa, Taurasi and La Romanee (Fleet Street Kitchen - Baltimore, MD): How lucky can I be to say that the 82 is the biggest of the flight “AS EXPECTED”. Expressive decadent nose of intensely sweet and slightly dry red and black fruits, red and black cherries, cherry liqueur, fruit cake, strong presence of balsamico, licorice, dark flowers, cedar, mineral via a hint or iron, grilled rare steak, dark flowers and tar. Incredible concentration, intense decadent dark fruit driven palate impression, unctuous, strong presence of acidity and nicely integrated tannins. The finish is extremely long and ends with very sweet and decadent note. I actually prefer the decadence and power of the 82 to the youthful and precise 78 and the 85 pure and red fruit driven but they are all incredible and I can’t really say one is better, just depend on your mood. A long life ahead.

Monumental Barolo dinner - Monfortino, Giacosa, Taurasi and La Romanee (Fleet Street Kitchen - Baltimore, MD): Very youthful nose, starts with a hint of VA then strong pine needle/eucalyptus note, black cherries, licorice, petrol, raisin, dark spices and earth. Incredibly youthful palate, cool yet decadent dark fruits, clean and focused palate, bright acidity and lovely long clean finish. The pine resin/eucalyptus note remains very noticeable and the overall impression don’t change significantly. Quite cool and youthful, I would have love to find a bit more balsamico and a bit less pine needle. Nevertheless, this is a great wine with a long life a head and still time to improve based on this bottle.

Medium brick, garnet core. Expressive nose circling around herbes des Provance, especially Thyme and Rosemary with some earth and underbush, fruit in the background. On the palate this wine is on the lighter side, medium bodied with a serious tannic core. Definitely to be consumed with food. Very long, aromatic finish but the somewhat dry touch of the tannins prevent a higher note.

Visit to Giacomo Conterno: The are two 45 HL Bottis of this wine. How do you describe a truly great wine? On bouquet, there is immediately several extra dimensions compared with the very good wines before it. A multi-layered, complex, detailed bouquet. A symphony of different red and black berry aromas, florals and spices. Immediately, in the mouth, you recognise you are tasting a special wine. Very intense with multiple layers and dimensions of flavour unfolding. It put me in mind of the experience of drinking a great Burgundy like a Musigny or a top Chave Hermitage. G Conterno was my twentieth winery visited in Burgundy and Piemonte on this trip. Having tasted hundreds of wines, including many Grand Cru Burgundies and top Baroli, I wrote in my book 'The greatest wine of the trip'. Probably to be released in the next year or so, said Roberto.

Visit to Giacomo Conterno: For me, a step up from the Francia ... There is only one 50 HL tank of this wine with approximately 2 HA of vineyards, so the wine was harvested at about 25 HL per HA. Roberto apologised that the wine needed racking. It was a little reduced on the nose but you could still sense the vigour and energy of the Cerretta on bouquet. Generous fruit in the mouth, quite voluptuous. Red fruited, with more structure seemingly than the Francia. Ultra-fine grained tannins on the back palate. 'Of course, only neutral oak is used for this wine' said Roberto.

Visit to Giacomo Conterno: For G Conterno's Baroli, Roberto said that 2012 is 'a good vintage, more tannic'. A more expressive, aromatic bouquet than for the Barberas, all perfumes and spices. Violets and aromas of tartufi neri dominate. In the mouth, more supple and softer seeming than the Barberas. Elegant, satiny and refined. Minuscule, suave tannins. Luscious but quite precise. Chalky, mineral finish. Very good. Someone asked about drinking windows and Roberto said '40-50+ years' for this wine.

Visit to Giacomo Conterno: From 20 year old vines on a west facing vineyard of largely clay soil. There was only one Botti of this wine. A very different expression, one I preferred. A slightly feral, herby, wet earth, tobacco nose, with orange peel and rose petal nuances. On palate, seemingly more fruit sweetness, a more fruit-driven expression than the Francia. Brighter, sparkling, refreshing acidity. Juicy and fresh, with the flavour profile dominated by blackberries, blackcurrant and briar, with some liquorice. The alcohol is as for the Francia.

Visit to Giacomo Conterno: From 40 year old vines on a west facing monopole vineyard with largely calcareous soil. Bright red colour. Bright, attractive largely red fruited bouquet of red cherries, blackberries and violets. Delicious in the mouth, quite silky with pure, rich fruit flavours, particularly wild cherry. Tangy, fresh acidity. Roberto emphasised the wine's elegance noting 'limestone soil leads to minerality'. He said that 2013 and 2014 were excellent vintages for G Conterno: 'in '13 good quantities, in '14 lower'. (In fact, the yield for '14 for this wine was a low 30 HL per HA). Surprisingly, here the alcohol here the alcohol is 14.5%. I would have guessed much lower.

My Birthday 2015 (Pine Green): Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and aired for 1.5 hours before drinking.
Appearance is clear, medium garnet colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with a lovely bouquet of mushrooms, earth, dark red cherries, slight floral rose petals. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, silky smooth integrated high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of earth, mushrooms, tar, tea leaves, dark red cherries, sour red cherries. Very long finish. Wow this Barolo is gorgeously elegant, and I know what people mean by Burgandian.
Outstanding quality. Traditional-styled Barolo. In drinking window now. Enjoy over next 5+ years.
Maceration of 3-4 weeks. Aged 4 years in large Slavonian botti.

Magnum shoot out - France vs. Italy (Switzerland): From Magnum, served blind. This was chosen to represent the peak of traditional Barolo making. Decanted for 2h. Medium garnet-brick. Expressive nose of cut hey, anise seeds, red fruit, tobacco, etc., very complex. Enters the palate medium bodied and restrained but with excellent fruit and structure. Clearly not a wine for the fruit-forward preferring customer but paired with a steak or a funghi risotto, priceless. This, together with the Lafite and Margaux was one of the preferred wines of the evening.

From Magnum bottle. Surprisingly approachable for Monfortino. Very complex but reticent aromatics of sweet red cherries, but also some dark berries, anise and other spices, tar, crushed rose petals and some herbal/hay kind of thing. Later also some espresso and leather notes emerge. Everything is super complex. It is full-bodied and dense without any heaviness, has teeth-stainingly high acidity and high tannin. Long and very complex finish. While this is still a baby in terms of evolution, I was surprised about the level of complexity and sheer class it is already showing. A super classic, massive but finessed and complex Monfortino of the very highest level... this is what classic traditional Barolo is all about.

Bricking on the edge. Beautiful honey on the nose with lots of earth. Tobacco at the end. Loads of acidity with some sweetness at the finish. Really just a gorgeous wine. I had it over a course of a few hours with three Bordeaux from the same vintage---it clearly towered over all three.
