Vinous group dinner at Morrell. I was amazed at how youthful this wine was. It had a tantalizing aroma and seemed to simply soar from the glass with each sip. This wine underscores how great mature Nebbiolo can be. I wish I had some in my cellar.

Vinous group dinner at Morrell. Gorgeous red hue, but still very tight on the palate. There is great pedigree here, but it is going to take a few years for it to emerge.

The Icon Vs. The Iconoclast: Giacomo Conterno & Luciano Sandrone (Morrell Wine Bar): The nose was intense, with currents of black cherry and dark soil tones wafting up from the glass. Digging deeper, I found sweet herbs, mushroom, tobacco, balsamic notes, black olive and minerals. Dark red fruits seemed to saturate the entire palate in a silky shroud, along with flavors of savory meat, minerals, and dark inner floral notes. The finish showed youthful tannin, with dried strawberry, minerals and tobacco leaf. This is an amazing wine.

The Icon Vs. The Iconoclast: Giacomo Conterno & Luciano Sandrone (Morrell Wine Bar): The bouquet of the ’85 Cascina Francia was everything that I wanted out of a mature Barolo, especially with its Serralunga earthiness and minerals. The nose opened with dark red berries, dried flowers, tea leaves, minerals and exotic spices, becoming sweeter with time in the glass. On the palate, soft, caressing textures washed over the senses, leaving masses of mature red fruits, inner floral tones and soil-laden minerals. It finished with dried fruits and berries, crushed fall leaves, and a hint of iodine. Stunning.

The Icon Vs. The Iconoclast: Giacomo Conterno & Luciano Sandrone (Morrell Wine Bar): Still a brick wall of a wine, giving hints of mint and eucalyptus with dark soil and mineral tones lurking in the glass, yet still not ready to show us its gifts. Intense, dark, brooding—but so far from ready on the palate, showing focused dark red fruit on a seemingly taught and wiry structure, with herbal hints in the background. It finished cool and structured, yet not hard or tannic. The balance here is beautiful; I just hope I’ll one day be able to see it in its maturity, which I believe will warrant a higher score.

The Icon Vs. The Iconoclast: Giacomo Conterno & Luciano Sandrone (Morrell Wine Bar): The ’96 Cascina Francia displayed a gorgeous bouquet of bright cherry, fresh minty herbs, rose and tobacco with a slight medicinal note to its fruit. It entered the palate with silky textures, yet quickly firmed up by fine tannin, releasing notes of tart berry, dried strawberry and minerals. It finished firm with lingering minerality and dried fruits. This was a very pretty, even if tannic, expression of ’96 Cascina Francia.

The Icon Vs. The Iconoclast: Giacomo Conterno & Luciano Sandrone (Morrell Wine Bar): The ’99 Cascina Francia opened with a dark and brooding bouquet of earth, animal and fruit, showing soil-laden minerals up front, leading to dried flowers, animal musk and dark berry tones. On the palate, it showed brilliant, yet tart, wild berry and strawberry fruits, minerals, and fine tannin that saturated the senses. It finished clean and youthful with hints of dried fruits. This is so young today, and it should continue to evolve into something very special over time.

The Icon Vs. The Iconoclast: Giacomo Conterno & Luciano Sandrone (Morrell Wine Bar): This was a thrilling wine to be sure, as a bouquet of intense rich fruits, masses of rose and tar, leather and earth came forward along with hints of mushroom and balsamic tones. On the palate, a dark mix of fruits washed across the senses, turning to cranberry and spice with deep, silky textures over a spine of fine tannin. The finish showed palate-saturating cherry with contrasting hints of dried citrus and inner floral tones. This was amazingly drinkable on this night, and some tasters wondered if it was the Cascina Francia, yet the bouquet alone gave it away.

The Icon Vs. The Iconoclast: Giacomo Conterno & Luciano Sandrone (Morrell Wine Bar): The nose was dark and earthy, showing wild berry with olive, minerals, woodland tones and animal musk. On the palate, it displayed stunning purity with tart black cherry and soil-laden minerality, kept lively through a brisk wave of acidity. A mix of dark fruit, minerals and tannin coated the palate throughout the finish. This may be one of the best ‘98 Cascina Francias I’ve ever tasted.

The Icon Vs. The Iconoclast: Giacomo Conterno & Luciano Sandrone (Morrell Wine Bar): The nose showed a mix of moist earth, minerals, musky cedar and olive brine. On the palate, I found tart red berry fruit in a sappy, yet somewhat muddled expression. Dried red fruits and musky tones lingered on the finish. The question came up if this is over the hill, or possibly damaged, yet the bottle was stored properly since release. It may just be that some ‘97s are fading fast.

Vinous group dinner at Morrell. Dark brown color, musty bouquet. Palate of old dried raisins. IMO, this, like most Baroli from this vintage, has passed on.

Vinous group dinner at Morrell. 4 hour slo-o (3 hours in cellar). Surprisingly this was tighter than the Monfortino. The wine had a lovely earthy bouquet like the Monfortino, but the fruit was not as prominent. While it did drink very I think its best years are still ahead. I will definitely decant my next bottle for a least 4 hours.

Vinous group dinner at Morrell. 4 hour slo-o (3 hours in cellar). The wine showed extremely well. Earthy bouquet, full-bodied, balanced and complex with impeccable purity and a very lengthy, elegant finish. One of the best Barolos I have ever tasted. This has the stuff to last for decades. Truly a wine with soul!

Very satisfying barolo. Nose was tight at first -- needed a min of 45 min to start to show, but evolved over next 1.5 hours even more. Classic tar and roses started to show, with chewy, dense fruit but with a tight mineral background. Leather and earth started showing up late. After 1.5 hrs a growing back end of big tannins started extending the finish for a long time. Still seems young (at least not near it peak).

We popped 21 bottles of Cru Barolo - 2004 tonight, in order to really dig into the real details of the communes, with this horizontal tasting.
This was tasted next to its big brother, the Monfortino, among four other wines in the Serralunga flight.
We were either very lucky with our bottle, or maybe we have different taste from other reviewers on this wine, since most of us agreed that this was a really great Barolo.
Or maybe our bottle was just awaken again after some sleeping period or something?
Anyway, this was an amazingly good wine!
In a perfect sweet spot right now.
The nose was just smashing, with lovely green herbs and grass, almost like stems/whole clusters, spicy, mint, tobacco, flowers, a bit of dusty minerals, dry red berries, truffles, mushrooms, tar, dry leather, cherries…all mixed together creating a very intriguing and complex nose.
The palate was equally fine and complex, with lovely cherries, red tart and sour berries, smoky minerals, warm stones, licorice and stems/herbs.
Extremely clean and long finish.
A very, very fine and expressive Cascina.
Sweet spot tonight.

This, ladies & gentlemen are World-class Seralunga!
Maybe the best Barolo Cru made?
We popped 21 bottles of Cru Barolo - 2004 tonight, in order to really dig into the real details of the communes, with this horizontal tasting.
This is at this point a very closed wine.
Not giving away all that much at all.
The nose shows the magical Monfortino perfume, once it starts to give something away.
The prettiest roses and faint sweet & ripe cherries, sweet Cuban tobacco leafs, spicy herbs, dry and dusty gravely minerals, touch of smoked tar…
The list is far from complete, it just showed different scents at each sniff, but reluctant to give everything away.
Palate is superbly clean, with sweet cherries, rose water, balsamic sweetness…
This is somewhat discrete and hiding it’s secrets, and at the same time a big monster, just waiting to burst out.
The structure is there, the body, spine, acidity and the incredible length.
Massive wine indeed.
Just not ready to show us today.
I hope we will meet again!
This is all about world class Cru and winemaking.
Points for tonight… we all know where this will end up in a decade, or more likely two, plus!

Deep bouquet with ripe dark forest fruits, herbs and spices, chocolate and roasted nuts. Same on the palate, sweet ripe berries, vanilla and a firm dose of oaky flavors. Good acidity and round tannin with still a firm bite. Beautiful, complex and concentrated wine.

Medium purple
Nose of earthy and cedar tones, black fruit
medium acidity, medium plus body, a big wine for a little grape
Black cherry, maybe plum, earthy tones here but spice does not show, nice acidic edge gives it fine balance
Very nice TQ Barbera

An incredible bottle. Cork barely tinged. Poured deep impenetrable purple, with a lighter froth suggesting youthfulness. All power and intensity, with a constantly shifting spectrum of fruit, most noticeably cherry, and savory elements. Clearly built to age. Hope we can resist long enough to allow that to happen.
