Opened table side at 6PM. This came later in the evening and I was again pleasantly surprised how good this was for an 03. A so so overripe vintage offset by an outstanding producer with decent btl age yielding an excellent result. I should have expected it to wow me like it did. 93+ Thanks Dave

A special bottle for Sam's 70th birthday. When opened it was pale and thin looking. Over the next half hour it thickened and darkened somewhat. But despite the appearance, it was a classic barolo. The nose was soft, but had minerality and floral notes (but no tar) that was very pleasing. The palate was actually chewy and earthy and rich with nebbiolo fruit. Still it came off as fragile and we drank it up over the next two hours and it started to fade in the last 15 minutes. Overall a great bit of history and a pleasure.

60 minute slo-o. Very well made wine that will rival some Baroli from the vintage. Enticing fruity and terroir-laden bouquet with a medium-bodied palate that has excellent focus and finesse. A wine one would expect from Roberto Conterno.

A nice wine to be sure but didn't fall in love with it. A nice level of tarry sweet fruits with a raw grape character that slightly detracted from things a bit. As I get older I'm noticing that a bit with Nebbiolo in particular and it's making me less enamored with it. It did follow an awesome bottle of Chave so maybe I'm being a bit unfair? This was a nice but simpler wine and not because it was too young either. This is my favourite producer so expected more but maybe older age is causing a declining interest in the style as it was more of a wrestle than a priviledge.

Decanted for 5 hours and totally gorgeous. Perhaps the best bottle I have had in that it was totally ready (although the 20 wines before it may have prepped me). Dark, intense, with a beautiful silky but dense mouth feel.

Wine of the flight. This is a very big wine. rich, deep and massively dense and totally drinkable right now. This was a year they made no Monfortino but this bottle lives up to the highest standard

I admit it, I was skeptical of everyone saying how gorgeous this is to drink now. But while it's not mature Barolo by any means, it really is gorgeous and a very smooth, accessible drink. It poured out a pale brown in color so worried me at first but, as these wines somehow manage to do, turned more ruby in the glass. I was positively bowled over by the texture on my first sip after an hour or so in a wide decanter. It was like sinking into a waterbed with the most supple satin sheets. So the structure is definitely not a factor getting in the way of enjoying this. Next to the '96 Giacosa Gallina, this came across as by far the more feminine, delicate wine, almost pinot noir-like. The flavors, however, have barely budged since release.

Out of magnum, after a 2hr decant, very fruit forward for a barolo with 10+ yrs of age, probably due to ripe vintage, had some hints of rose and spice, pairs well with a heavy protein.

There seems to be a lot of bottle variation here despite the high reviews. Perfect cork and fill. Poured into a large Reidel glass and consumed over 3+ hours. This particular bottle seemed mostly closed and in need of another 5-10 years. Dark and brooding only giving up aromas of black cherry, balsamic, hits of tar and damask floral elements. Similar notes on the palate, but missing some depth, complexity and excitement. There's potential, though. Given the high CT scores I was expecting much more. Enjoyable, but nowhere near some of my best Nebbiolo experiences. 92 +

Tasted blind, this wine had a medium red center with orange/tan rims. The high intensity nose showed roses, brown spices, burnt oranges. After a few hours I noticed a touch of ethyl acetate.

In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with great ripe fruit and excellent length.

While this bottle may not quite have been up to par, it was still quite good. I would look for an excuse to pop any remaining bottles.

Brick red, clear. Large nose of tar, anise, blueberry. Medium tannins and high acidity. Lots of red fruit, saline qualities, savory, black tea. Long finish. Highly drinkable and delicious.

[Decanted at 2pm. The cork was hard, but came out in one piece, unlike the bottle of 5/14/15.] Floral and fragrant right from the git go. Nose of tar, dried roses, and charred wood. The mid-palate has sweet cherry fruit, but the long finish is dominated by dry tannins at this point.
By 6pm, the nose is more bacon and rose. More silky than the G. Rinaldi BLC, but still some tannin and sour cherry on the finish. A little better than the bottle we had on 5/14/15. With 6 hours of air, this is definitely ready to go. Excellent with BBQ'ed short ribs.
