Our First Acker Auction (Marea in NYC): We killed a few babies during the day, but this was probably the most ridiculous version of it. Was opened and double-decanted and then poured. Still very tannic and tight at first. Mostly I just taste stems, hints of spiced red fruits. With some time it opened a bit, but really this needs quite a bit more time in the bottle.

The wine is still a young gentlemen which still need time to develop. The cork is remove at 10am and we start drinking at around 8pm.

In the morning, the wine is full of tannin and the other aroma is very subtle. After 10 hours bottle breathe, the wine develop more and more characters, with bunches of rose, perfume, black cherry, herb and earthy. Tannin is much smoother than in the morning, but still chewy.

A hugh structure wine with long finish. Better to hold for a few more years

A towering achievement in wine. One of the wines of my life. Drank at EMP after being opened with great care. I was nervous as I have a pretty strict long decant protocol with older Nebbiolo but given the situation this was pop and pour. The color was so much deeper than I anticipated and the nose exploded out of the glass. Had everything I look for in aged Nebbiolo in spades. Tar, clove, stewed red fruits. Intensity. As the wine sat in the glass it continued to improve but this was incredible out of the gate. The palate was amazing with a finish that went on forever. I rarely post tasting notes but I couldn't resist. This was astonishing.

Brought to Peppoli at Spanish Bay, had with their famous Lasagna Tradizionale Classic-Style, Stuffed with Filet Mignon, Calabrese Sausage & Parmesan Cheese...decanted and shook vigorously for 30 mins……no Monfo this year, so this has all the good juice! SO young right now, but fantastic with an amazing future! Such pretty and intoxicating florals here….dried roses, red licorice, flowers, tar, orange grove……surprisingly the tannic grip is not too strong….silky smooth red berry fruits….pretty, yet has a deep dark power to it…..little mint, tobacco spice, leather…..tilled rose garden, dusty cherry spice. Just SO tasty to drink right now…if you like the dry pucker, which I do…..but 10+yrs will do you wonders! Need more for the cellar.+pts

Fully developed nose. Madeira-like oxidation and caramelisation, sponge cake, wet soil, raisins, figs, a touch of perfumed roses and sweetgale.

Slender body with surprisingly round acidity, no tannins to speak of and still some sweet fruit. Medium intensity and a medium finish.

Fun to try, but way over the hill. Lacks intensity but with a decent balance still.

Light, slightly bricking red. Elegant nose of sappy balsamic and sweet mentholated notes, with some faded red fruit and spice. On the palate, subtle fruit, powerful spice and earth, great acidity, and a finish of considerable length. A majestic wine. Well kept bottles will evolve positively for 20+ years.

Still very young and full of integrated tannins. Leather, cigar box and sour cherrry. A beautiful and balanced wine with a very long finish. Decanted for 3 hours.

Full disclosure, this opened one day after delivery (does that count as a Pobega?) and decanted for about 3 hrs. My initial reaction pure old school Barbera, as this loaded to the hilt with sour cherry and searing to put it kindly, acidity. With rich and warm food, no problem, but don't even think about touching this on it own. Spent a good 2 hrs + on this, and the pedigree is without question as additional air time in the glass added dimension and complexity to the cherry themed palate, intriguing notes of mint and soil, and overall balance and focus on the finish. I'd strongly advise a 2 to 3 year hold to let this settle down a bit, but should be a beautiful addition to the Francia Barbera stable.

Dinner with Jeffrey: Double decanted seven hours earlier. Better balanced on opening than the 1988. Deep ruby red. An evocative, multi-dimensional perfume, from memory even better than for the entrancing 1985 of a month or so ago. A beautiful wine. Pure and driven. Superb balance and gorgeous acidity. Perfectly ripe fruit. Complex and nuanced. Flavours of black and red berry compote, spices, warm soil, dry underbrush, minerals, florals etc etc. Layers and layers of flavour. Seamless. Serious structure and incredible length. Ideally, I’d give this wine 5+ years. A great wine, for me about as good as wine gets.

Dinner with Jeffrey: Double decanted seven hours earlier. On opening, austere and a little varnishy. Ruby red very slightly browning. With seven hours’ air a beautiful, more nuanced and seductive bouquet of red and dark berries, musk and dusty earth had emerged. The bouquet also showed the wine's evolution with notes of black tea, soy and balsamico notes. A lovely wine on the palate, that had the misfortune to be on the table beside the superb 1990. Showing some development with excellent acidity. John said (and I agreed) that the 1988 was ‘quite a way behind the 1990’ in quality. Savoury and secondary flavours: leather horse saddle, earth, plums, espresso, mushrooms and dry brushwood. Fine grained tannins. Good concentration and structure. Based only on this example, I’d be looking to drink a 1988 in the next few years, if I had a bottle.

Mor röfleside olan orta yakut renginde. Önde petunya benzeri floral aromalara is, kiraz , frombuaz benzeri siyah meyve , baharat, hafifçe toprak ve silik füme çağrıştıran şarküteri dokunuşları eşlik ediyor.

This bottle went thoroughly dumb on me. Must have closed down for a while. Wine is excellent and delicious, no signs of any problems--just that it's not GIVING. All the flavors and smells were muted compared to my 96 rating two years ago. So, will have to see what happens on the next bottle.

Deep deep purple. Initially reticent aromas of tar and iron and mushroom. But within 15 minutes of decanting, aromas of violet and rose emerged. The final impression was kaleidoscopic--a powerful, youthful Barolo just entering its drinking window.

Cloudy ruby color. Nose of balsamic vinegar and orange peel, with a burnt note. 10 minutes of air bring out tar, menthol, and paprika. No perceptible fruit aromas remaining. On the palate it mainly registers as bitter, particularly at the aftertaste. Very impressive length and density, and the complex nose shows different sides with every sniff. But I think I can only appreciate wines at this stage of their evolution intellectually. I'm learning to drink my Nebbiolo younger.

Barolo gathering - 85 Giacosa SS, 64 G. Conterno, 89 B Mascarello, 04 Monfortino and etc. (Da Domenico Ristorante, Mclean, VA): Pop and pour. The biggest scale Barolo of my life. Incredibly youthful intense nose displaying decadent red fruits, dry black cherry, balsamico, iron, mineral and root beer. Unbelievable concentration, incredibly layered fruit, intense sweet black cherry driven palate impression, bright acidity, the opulent fruit completely masking the tannins, strong presence of irony mineral and never ending finish. Obviously very young and primary but also incredibly enjoyable for my palate.

Barolo gathering - 85 Giacosa SS, 64 G. Conterno, 89 B Mascarello, 04 Monfortino and etc. (Da Domenico Ristorante, Mclean, VA): The color is still unbelievably youthful and opaque. Expressive youthful nose displaying dry red cherries, tree bark, rusty nail, nutmeg and other sweet spices, tar, a hint of madeira/oxidative note and earth. Excellent concentration, masculine and rustic palate, pretty straightforward overall expression, bright acidity and long dry cherry driven finish. Barry mentions inclusion of barbera and I have to agree. Despite extremely youthful expression, a hint of oxidative note is a bit bothersome for my palate. A couple extra points for the concentration and for being so young.
