2003 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley

I'm sure this is well-made as far as Aussie shirazes go. Really extracted and powerful black fruit dominates the nose and the palate. A little bit of charred meat and hoisin sauce. Still very much primary despite its age, although whatever tannins there may have been have dissipated. Acidity is on the low side of medium. Not cloying, but it does feel a little loose, and while the fruit is fun and impressive it's a one-glass only type of wine for me.

Decanted about two hours. Wonderful wine. Inky black/purple. Fruit is smooth, complex, plush, integrated without being in-your-face or over the top. Long finish. Great stuff.

A year after my first bottle, I opened one tonight and was pleasantly surprised. This bottle was quite good. Gone were the cherry and bitter notes from the previous bottle. This bottle held notes of blackberries and blueberries, with a nice pepper kick behind it. Fragrant, full, and delicious, I am finally understanding the WA 95+ score.

Outstanding bottle of wine. I like Glaetzer's wines. Big solid fruit and tannins. This one had solid fruit and balanced tannins and was, in a word, yummy.

Absolutely loving this right now. It still has that beautiful plushness of youth but it has mellowed and feels much more balanced and complete. Such high quality fruit here, great concentration without pushing it to far. Black cherries, plums, savoury but with just the right amount of a sweet edge to complement the finish. Carries through with just the right amount of drying tannins and impeccable acid.

The cork was brittle but no leakage had occurred. The wine is fantastic. Big fruit and wonderful legs. However, IT IS TOO YOUNG ! Leave it until 2018 or later. I have two more bottles and will wait to try them.

As good as Barossa shiraz gets, from a vintage that just gets better and better with time.
Long and complex, blueberries, anise, floral notes, tar, earth and wonderful mouth-feel. Ripe tannins are melting away, leaving this wine close to it's peak.
This is one of the few Aussie shiraz at this price point that absolutely improves with age. Highly recommended.

Very deep ruby, this wine shows black cherry, blackberries, cinnamon, vanilla, and charred wood on the youthful nose initially. It has med+ acidity, high tannin, high alcohol, and a gripping intensity on the palate with flavours of black pepper, vanilla, eucalyptus and quite a lot of dark chocolate. Outstanding wine, with all the flavours distinct from one another without blending together. At the moment the alcohol stands out a bit, and this wine will definitely improve with age. Keep.

Dark violet and clear in the glass. Dark berries, bacon, blood, vanilla, and campfire on the nose. Same on the palate with some darker coffee/chocolate undertones as well. Very concentrated and intense. Long, smooth finish which echoed the initial notes. Firm, and very well-balanced with respect to tannins, acid, alcohol, and fruit. 14.7% alcohol seemed appropriate for this wine. Very, very good bottle.

Usually, I am disappointed by "entry-level" wines from premier producers. Not the case here. I am looking forward to experiencing a higher-range Glaetzer, as the 2012 Wallace indicates that this wine maker has serious talent.

The surprise of the night! Garnet color with nose of beets, tomato paste and stuffed pepper. Palate evolved to reveal Bloody Mary-like spices, black pepper, and ground cherry. Not as hot as region or varietal makeup would suggest - a very curious wine. It kept you coming back for more - would've been the wine of the night were it not tasted with an '03 Grange, but it won the value competition hands down. Will seek again for a more interesting drink - great bang for the buck!!

Decanted. Dark wine with no visible age signs. Blackberry and oak influence on the nose. Integrated and supple, oak and alcohol kept in check with a subdued quality and acidic backbone. Excellent, but I've had Amon-Ras in the past with more depth and complexity.

Very nice, well balanced wine that isn't an over the top Aussie fruit bomb. Needs one to two hours of air time in the decanter to soften up.

Started with a nice bouquet of blackberries and ripe dark fruit. After a couple of hours decanting aromas opened up and revealed cocoa, cinamon, cloves and more sweet spices. Fulled bodied with grippy/coating tannins it paired nicely with a rich, sweet stew. In the glass it evolved and showed a good depth of concentrated fruit with a complex variety of spice and aromas.

Reddish orange black with a clear watery edge with a nose dominated by a strong presence of acetone and refined fruits. The palate is quite full and flavorsome with notes of prunes, vanilla ice cream, boiled meat, earth and minerals. This wine tastes very smooth and mellow at age 10. It’s exuberant fruitiness has long settled down and nicely integrated with the oak. I think this is well into its peak (or perhaps on its decline) and does not have any prospects of gettting any better. Its best to drink up and enjoy for all its worth now.

This is a classic, well made Barossa Valley Shiraz. Big, dense and in your face, but really well balanced for this style. Drinking well after a couple of hours of double decanting with exceptional depth and length. This is in a very good place for me right now, and while I think this has many years ahead of it, I think I'll drink up my last bottle in the next few years, before the fruit starts taking a turn towards stewed. Excellent!

Full bodied fruit bomb, great mouth feel and flavor, still with ample legs on it. My criticism is that it's a little sweet for my tastes, although I was in a minority on this aspect; my friends quite enjoyed this one.
