Nose full of dark fruit and peppercorns. Yum. With time open it gained a black cherry nose and palate, quite juicy, but with tons of minerality and energy.

Quite cloudy. Bursting with tropical / pineapple flavors. Good acid, overall just so well done and complex.

The smokey syrah funk that I always find in good syrah is the driving force in this wine.

A relatively big wine, so needs to be a bit warmer than I often serve lighter reds. When given the space to shine, this is quite fun. Sort of like Ridge Zin, in that the oak and fruit are big, but it still feels well made and reflective of the site.

PnP, straight out of the bottle the nose is very expressive with the characteristic Esquisto note of pepper, a little stronger here than in previous vintages. On the palate there is a pronounced bitterness - not unpleasant, but perhaps a shade unbalanced - and the nice pepper note again, along with a tiny bit of dark & red fruit. This is young and perhaps not in equilibrium at this early stage, but still beautifully expressive and distinctive. Over an hour the bitterness mellows. This is another wonderful Halcon wine, with a bright future ahead.

Light nose--something of tropical fruit—with, maybe, with the slightest hint of pungency. On the tongue, tropical fruit is immediately apparent—pineapple, banana. Then I get acid—more lemony than pineapple. The final flavor sensation is caramel. When I detect the caramel it also becomes apparent that this wine has a somewhat viscous mouth feel to it. That seems a bit surprising because that would seem to belie my opinion that this is a light-bodied, very refreshing wine.

Continuing to improve as it ages in bottle - and really shows how good this '10 vintage is proving to be for syrahs from Sonoma/north coast. It still takes at least a day to open, and is best after 2 days plus. Great balance as has been noted, the tannins still show some hints of sandpaper, and the acidity is just awesome. Really solid dark fruits, great earthiness (some shrooms and flintiness) and a nicely tapering finish as an afterthought. I don't see this one fading for another 10 plus years and am looking forward to how it improves after this year.

Consistent with previous bottle. Oak seemed a bit more prominent this time around but overall, this is fantastic Cali syrah.

Creamy lemon lime with a nice mineral steak. Nice and round as well. Fantastic, better than the last bottle even. Glad I've got two more on the way.

Dark red violet color; lifted, roasted red fruit, roasted black fruit, light pepper nose; tart red currant, cranberry, pepper palate with medium acidity; could use 1-2 years; medium-plus finish (65% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 5% Syrah; 14.1% alcohol) 90+ points

Prompted by DAVID_T's spot-on review, I opened another one of these tonight. Dark fruit, earth, and a hint of smoke. Drinking beautifully, with tons of upside potential. Just a gorgeous cold-climate syrah.

I'm planning an Alturas vertical party for 2020.

The nose is a 'wow' mix of smoke, meat and dark fruit. The flavors show blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, grilled meat, earth and a bit of smoke. Medium+ acid, medium tannins and a long finish. Young but drinking well now and still a long life ahead of it.

Aromas of blueberry, blackberry, earth and a hint of smoke. The palate is definitely more fruit-forward than previous years, still plenty tasty with mixed blue/dark fruit and a bit of earth. Medium acidity/tannins, overall I feel that while young this will drink well earlier in life than previous vintages.

The color belied the age on this wine. N: Funky at first, this opened up to reveal dark fruit and cool climate Syrah. P: So smoooth, but seemed to have less impact than before and a tad less fruit. F: Medium, with resolved tannins and acidity. Based on this bottle, I'll be drinking mine sooner than later. 90+

Very nice overall but a little too ripe for my tastes. Still good acidity and fairly good balance but Intend to prefer a little more meat/olive/smoke and less overt dark fruit in my Syrahs.

QPR alert! One of the best $25 syrahs I have ever had, just entering a great drinking window, tannins still very present but just enough to give it structure and interest, not at teeth-melting levels. Spice & fruit in equal doses and a pleasure to drink. Decant 1 hour or more and enjoy with grilled meats, stew, or burgers.

Waxy, unripe apple and pear with a hint of spice and cream. Low acidity with medium to full body. Short to medium finish. This was open for two days and was better on day two. Compared to the '11, this falls short.
