Nice bright red/purple color. Very elegant and food friendly wine. Rich blackberry, subtle earth and oak hints. Not many Cabs produced on the Central Coast, but they hit the mark with this one. Bonus for nice QPR.

Decanted. Drank after it was open for a couple of hours. Nice secondary nose, with leather spice, and soft, but lush, red cherry notes. Ripe on the palate with ample fruit more spice, and some leathery notes. Soft tannic finish with a juicy acidic spine.. This was very good.

Representative of the region's terroir, rich with chocolate, cedar and tobacco expressions. However, the presence of smooth fruit is missing and overall elegance lacking. Tannins are excessive. Still young, may improve in a couple of years.

100% Syrah, aged 18 months in French oak, 30% new. 14.5% alcohol. Used Coravin to pour a couple small glasses to have with homemade pizza, so this note is equivalent to a pop-and-pour. Fantastic nose of blueberry pie bursting from the glass, accompanied by light floral scents and a hint of chocolate. After lingering in the glass for a while, subtle notes of leather mix with the fruit aromas. This is a very tasty Syrah, although the flavor profile didn't quite live up to the fantastic fragrance...but again, this was a pop and pour, so a little air might open things up nicely. Juicy blueberry and plum fruit on the attack, with a mid-palate of baking spices and a moderately long finish. One of the best 100% Syrahs we've had. Might decant the rest of the bottle next time to give it more air since our two pours didn't last long enough for the wine to truly evolve. Didn't pair perfectly with the pizza (seemed to clash with the oregano), but that would be the fault of the selector (me) and is hardly a shortcoming of this outstanding wine. Seemed well balanced with noticeable acidity while the lengthy finish seems to indicate good tannin structure, but it certainly appears that this might be an early drinker since it's showing so well already for a 2012. Highly recommended. 1,100 cases produced.

Wow! Laying down this wine for a few years proved to be worthwhile. This is a dark, full bodied red with dense, super-ripe, black fruit aromas and deeply extracted flavors bolstered by youthful, mouth-coating tannins. Yum!

Had to perform a bottle test after sampling at the winery. Bold blackcurrent, and pepper, lingering to licorice with a lingering finish. Paired with ribeye, roasted brussel sprouts, and Valentine's truffles!

Great color in the glass. Slight pepper with good tannins. Justification and Isosolies juice. Easy jam then explodes with great flavors. Just wonderful hints of spices at the end. Has more to give. Will be good in 5 years.

An interesting experience with a bottle at the edge of its drinkability window. 85% Cab Franc, 15% Malbec. Popped the cork at the restaurant and had a small sample. Perfect cork, noticeable sediment and crystallization. A filter funnel is recommended. The first initial sample immediately presented a soft, but distinctive bouquet of ripe plum and flowers. The taste, however, was still fairly muted, so we decanted. After several minutes of air, it almost completely shut down, reduced to a merely "hot", astringent wine with just a bare hint of its potential.

After an hour in the decanter or in the glass, if you let the glass sit (no swirling!), the bouquet of juicy plum and violets returned, and carefully sipping the glass gave a nice lush black fruit attack, a subtle mid palate with hints of black currants, and a moderate finish with just a touch of chocolate mint. Remarkably, if you swirled the glass, the top layer that had gotten some air (and was just opening up) would get completely overwhelmed, and you ended up with a glass of overly "hot" alcohol fumes and a mere hint of fruit. We reserved and recorked half the bottle when it was apparent that we didn't have time over dinner to let it breathe adequately, so I will revise our score tomorrow or the next evening, with the current rating based mostly on its potential.

Final note from day 1: 90 minutes after opening, and 15 minutes after finishing our glasses and rebottling the decanter, the last dregs of the 2009 Halter Ranch Cab Franc in our two glasses had a wonderful bouquet of ripe black fruit, violets, and a slightly toasty, crème brûlée aspect...so we are really looking forward to trying this wine again on day 2.

Note from Day 2: Nope. I was wrong. It was all leather and vinegar on Day 2...barely drinkable. So it was at its "best" upon opening. Perhaps I should not have put it in the refrigerator after recorking the bottle, since the time necessary to warm it up might have impacted its drinkability, but I was very disappointed that it didn't improve at all on Day 2. Revised my score downward as a result. We have 1 other bottle, and I'll update my Tasting Notes with any salient details should it deviate from this disappointing encounter.

Very nice, well balanced with good fruit, but not a lot of distinctive spice. Essentially, just a really nice wine. As with most reds, it got better as the night progressed and it got more air.
